Friday Open Thread | Nicolle Wallace to GOP: ‘Your silence is going to get somebody killed’

After yet another day of Trump smears against the FBI, MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace — a former Republican strategist who served President George W. Bush and John McCain — asked a chillingly relevant question.

On Thursday afternoon’s “Deadline: White House,” Wallace told her panel that there were a few things she was tired of hearing.

“[Trump’s] base is unshakeable, the president is comfortable obliterating norms, and nothing is going to happen,” she said. “Something is going to happen!”

“Somebody is going to get hurt and where is the outcry for the enablers?” Wallace asked. “There are real people standing by. The Justice Department just greenlit a third briefing of classified information about a Republican informant, none of us should know his name, but we all do because the president wants to know what he knew about the counterintelligence investigation into his campaign. And I guess my question is, when do people stand up and say, you’re tainted by standing — your silence is going to get someone killed.”

Since he doesn’t feel the need to prepare for nuclear diplomacy with North Korea, Trump spent Thursday morning ranting on Twitter about special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation (and misspelling “special counsel” for the ninth time).

“When and where will all of the many conflicts of interest be listed by the 13 Angry Democrats (plus) working on the Witch Hunt Hoax. There has never been a group of people on a case so biased or conflicted,” Trump wrote in one tweet, and harangued the Justice Department and Mueller’s team in several others.

He even had the nerve to demand that Americans thank him for firing FBI Director James Comey, an act that Trump has repeatedly admitted was intended to obstruct the Russia investigation.

And hours earlier, Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani accused Mueller of a crime, telling the Associated Press that Mueller and his team are “trying to frame” Trump.

But Republicans have, at best, continued to stand by and allow Trump to undermine and obstruct the FBI. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan acknowledged, on Wednesday, that there is no evidence to support Trump’s spying lies, but at a press conference Thursday, still defended the sham “oversight” that has been used to try and out a legitimate FBI informant.

Trump’s abuses of power are frightening, but they would not be possible without the complicity of Republicans in Congress.

    Before going on to do exactly that: misrepresent what is happening.

    That is a lie.

    Both plaintiffs in the ACLU lawsuit had their children taken away from them even though they weren’t posing a threat, falsely claiming to be the parent OR put into criminal proceedings.

    But even more insidiously, the whole vicious point of the “zero tolerance” policy is that the Trump admin is ***choosing to put people into criminal proceedings*** and then taking their children from them.

    That’s the heart of the issue!

    These are people who are pursuing asylum claims, by and large, who the last administration *did not prosecute criminally*. But Trump and Sessions and Nielsen are making sure they are being criminally charged AS A NEW POLICY THEY ANNOUNCED.

    It is infuriating that the Trump administration has created this policy, even announced it and speechified about it and bragged about it, and now it and its allies, faced with the sheer moral revulsion in response, want to pretend it doesn’t exist.

      But whenever despair creeps in, stop, think of Roger Ailes… And know that this too shall pass..
      I know it doesn’t feel like it… And even when you expect it, nothing happens – and in the end, they seem to stay at it, and there seems to be no end in sighted the madness..
      But I say, if nothing else works, think Roger Ailes…
      Remember when he terrorized the world and inspired fear even in our leaders… Everyone kowtowing to him.. making pilgrimages to him to batter favors so he wouldn’t terroririze them and their loved ones… plead that at a minimum, their wife and family be left alone in his effectively weaponized attacks and gaslighting …
      But suddenly it was all over, and by the the time he died last year, he was a pariah… stripped of everything… And he died like a chicken… nary a whimper..barely mourned, barely remembered..
      It’s a given ..they all get carried away…Believe themselves invincible.. Ask Maddoff.. one minute he’s on top of the world, next he’s in jail for life.. his two sons dead.. one at his own hand, the other of cancer ..stress.. And Maddoff’s wife midway to her twilight years is now a pariah too …cutting coupons and occasionally indulged with pity by the rare rich former friend ..
      Who would’ve imagined just 10 years ago, the fate so many previously invincible, all face today..
      Just like Roger Ailes, Maddoff, etc. there’s a day of reckoning, and they never see it coming..
      Trust that they will all get theirs.. Trust that Karma is only just getting warmed up..
      The treasonous buffoon and all his complicit enablers, sycophantic cohort, puppetteers etc, they’ll all get theirs.. And just like Roger Ailes, Maddoff etc., it’s not even on their radar, and they can’t even begin to fathom or contemplate their fate, and what is soon to become of them and their once cushy and previously entitled and protected evil existence.. or the how and when of their very public humiliation and inevitable downfall.. they won’t see it coming, but it’s round the corner already..
      Not yet known is the how or the when, but their downfall is imminent… And it’ll be the thing they and those of us looking on, couldn’t have ever predicted..
      Trust.. Trust.. Trust..
      Believe.. Believe.. Believe..
      That inevitable reckoning will happen and it will be televised..
      And just as we’ve been endlessly bombarded with ‘breaking news’ every freaking day for the past 2+ years, the rest of us will wake up to the inevitable end of this nightmare courtesy of the downfall of the treasonous buffoon and co., on our television sets one seemingly ordinary morning …soon ..
      My only wish is that a bunch of the media and ‘analysts’ and ‘strategists’ and the GOP and others who enabled and profited from this nightmare, are all swept up and out – and permanently too, with it..

    The belief is pervasive that there were no soldiers of color on the beaches of France on one of the most important days of World War II. None of the many films made about D-Day like “Saving Private Ryan” show black soldiers storming Omaha Beach. Most history books don’t mention them.

    It is a sore point among black veterans.

    But they were there, landing under brutal fire early on June 6, 1944. The men of the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion were packed tight with infantry troops aboard small metal boats that motored toward the Normandy coast obscured by smoke and fire. It was a harrowing ride, and even worse when they landed as early as 9 a.m.

    By the time the sun set on June 6, 1944, some 2,000 African Americans had landed in Normandy. They were engineers, stevedores, and gunners. They carried the wounded to safety and buried the dead. They drove ambulances, earth-movers and the trucks that would supply the front lines. Black quartermasters won praise from Gen. Dwight Eisenhower for salvaging their trucks sunk in deep water — and saving significant quantities of blood plasma and medical supplies that would save lives on Omaha Beach. Eisenhower praised the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion for carrying out its mission “with courage and determination” and said the men exposed like sitting ducks on the sand “proved an important element of the air defense team.”

    On this Veterans Day, it is important that we remember that the more than 1 million African Americans in uniform in WWII were ordered to fight for freedom and democracy abroad, while at home they were mistreated in an Army segregated by race.

    They suffered daily humiliations at the hands of white commanders who considered them less intelligent and courageous than white men. An Army War College study concluded the black soldier “naturally believes himself inferior to the white.” This was the reason given for assigning the vast majority of black troops to labor and service units.

    Kansas has a problem: It has a law allowing teachers to carry guns in the classroom, but almost no schools are using it because insurance companies refuse to provide coverage if they do. As EMC Insurance, the largest insurer of schools in Kansas, explained in a letter to its agents, the company “has concluded that concealed handguns on school premises poses a heightened liability risk.”

    Then came the Parkland, Florida, school shooting in February, leading frustrated Republican legislators in Kansas to try forcing the issue with a bill banning “unfair, discriminatory” rates for schools that arm staff. The insurance industry held firm. Last month, the bill failed.

    “I don’t think insurance companies are notorious anti-gun liberals,” said Mark Tallman, associate executive director for the Kansas Association of School Boards, “so we think they’ve got good reasons for not doing it.”

    As proposals to arm teachers sweep across the nation, insurance companies are being forced to weigh the risks of these controversial plans. Some insurers are balking. Some are agreeing to provide policies but lamenting the lack of evidence about whether it makes schools safer – or increases the chances of people getting shot. Others are raising rates.

    “There’s not a lot of carriers that want to insure that risk,” Nate Walker, a senior vice president at insurer AmWINS Group.

    Levi Sanders, son of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), announced his Senate candidacy in New Hampshire in February — but his father still hasn’t endorsed him.

    The Boston Globe reported Thursday that in spite of the elder Sanders’ statement saying he is “very proud” of his son and his candidacy, many in the district Levi is running believe the senator isn’t endorsing his son because he’s running an “inept” campaign.

    “His limited personal experience as a politician includes a bid for Claremont City Council about eight years ago,” the report noted, “which he lost with a seventh place finish in a field of nine.”

    “Nobody I know is really considering Levi as an option,” Burt Cohen, a former state senator that endorsed the elder Sanders but is backing one of his son’s opponents, told the Globe. “No, it’s actually worse than that: I don’t hear anyone even bringing up his name. People aren’t sure why he is running. If Levi thought he could just transfer the enthusiasm from his father to himself, well he is learning that is just not happening at all.”

    “It is just silly what he is doing,” he continued. “The way to sum up how people feel about the campaign is the eyerolls you get when his name does, infrequently, come up.”

    Court documents allege that before he stopped working with the committee in December, Wolfe used encrypted messaging applications to contact three reporters, then lied repeatedly about those communications. He’s also accused of lying about his relationship with Watkins when FBI agents asked him about the sources for an article she wrote. He initially denied knowing her, then when shown photos of them together, he admitted they had been in a three-year relationship.

    Watkins denied that Wolfe was a source of classified information when they were dating, and says she disclosed the relationship to her editors at BuzzFeed News, Politico, and the New York Times at the time. It appears one focus of the FBI’s probe was a BuzzFeed article published in April 2017 in which she reported that Russian spies tried to recruit former Trump adviser Carter Page in 2013.

    WASHINGTON — The special counsel’s accusation this week that Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, tried to tamper with potential witnesses originated with two veteran journalists who turned on Mr. Manafort after working closely with him to prop up the former Russia-aligned president of Ukraine, interviews and documents show.

    The two journalists, who helped lead a project to which prosecutors say Mr. Manafort funneled more than $2 million from overseas accounts, are the latest in a series of onetime Manafort business partners who have provided damaging evidence to Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Their cooperation with the government has increasingly isolated Mr. Manafort as he awaits trial on charges of violating financial, tax and federal lobbying disclosure laws.

    Mr. Manafort’s associates say he feels betrayed by the former business partners, to whom he collectively steered millions of dollars over the years for consulting, lobbying and legal work intended to bolster the reputation of Viktor F. Yanukovych, the former president of Ukraine. Mr. Manafort has told associates that he believes Mr. Mueller’s team is using the business partners to pressure him to flip on Mr. Trump in a manner similar to the one used to prosecute the energy giant Enron in the early 2000s by a Justice Department task force that included some lawyers now serving on Mr. Mueller’s team.

    I loved #AnthonyBourdain. He was all UP IN IT everywhere he went. He fit in with everyone & made food from different places, countries look so delicious. He’d sit down & eat with everyone. He cared about everyone, which made me love him. I’ll miss him taking me across the world.
