Happy Monday, Everyone! This week’s feature is the music group Foreigner.

I know, some folks might think we were covering all foreigners. Sorry to disappoint, we’d have to cover this particular “foreigner” group in perpetuity.

Foreigner is an English-American rock band, originally formed in New York City in 1976 by veteran English musician Mick Jones ex-Spooky Tooth and fellow Briton and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald along with American vocalist Lou Gramm.

Jones came up with the band’s name as he, McDonald and Dennis Elliott were British, while Gramm, Al Greenwood and Ed Gagliardi were American.Their biggest hit single, “I Want to Know What Love Is”, topped the United Kingdom and United States charts among others. They are one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time with worldwide sales of more than 80 million records,including 37.5 million records in the US.

    The desperate sobbing of 10 Central American children, separated from their parents one day last week by immigration authorities at the border, makes for excruciating listening. Many of them sound like they’re crying so hard they can barely breathe. They scream “Mami” and “Papá” over and over again, as if those are the only words they know.

    The baritone voice of a Border Patrol agent booms above the crying. “Well, we have an orchestra here,” he jokes. “What’s missing is a conductor.”

    Then a distraught but determined 6-year-old Salvadoran girl pleads repeatedly for someone to call her aunt. Just one call, she begs anyone who will listen. She says she’s memorized the phone number, and at one point, rattles it off to a consular representative. “My mommy says that I’ll go with my aunt,” she whimpers, “and that she’ll come to pick me up there as quickly as possible.”

    An audio recording obtained by ProPublica adds real-life sounds of suffering to a contentious policy debate that has so far been short on input from those with the most at stake: immigrant children. More than 2,300 of them have been separated from their parents since April, when the Trump administration launched its “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which calls for prosecuting all people who attempt to illegally enter the country and taking away the children they brought with them. More than 100 of those children are under the age of 4. The children are initially held in warehouses, tents or big box stores that have been converted into Border Patrol detention facilities.

    someone on another blog had a simple question with regards to the kids:

    don’t understand why the kids don’t even have simple plastic id/info bracelets like they have in hospitals.

    let’s be blunt- that is only a solution for those who actually WANT to keep up with the children.

    Last month, I reported on a meeting at DHS in August, 2017, in which Administration officials advocated for family separation to deter migrants, including asylum seekers, from Central America. Guess what was also on the agenda in that meeting?

    Ending the Flores Agreement, which mandated that the government meet minimum requirements for how to treat immigrant kids in government custody.

    Since the late 1990s, the terms of Flores got shored up and strengthened, through a 2008 law and subsequent direction from the courts. To those in the Admin who advocate separation of families, putting an end to these protections was a priority, too. Why?

    Stephen Miller, Gene Hamilton, Jeff Sessions—they all thought that ending these protections would discourage families and kids from migrating north to seek asylum. Without Flores, etc, kids could be held in detention longer, under tougher conditions.

    Family separation. Curbing asylum (e.g. sessions’ decision last week). Chipping away at Flores. All are of a piece.

    WHY haven’t their children been returned to them?

    WHAT is the process by where these children will be reunited with their DEPORTED PARENTS?

    For those that don’t understand just how horrific this is….there are no plans to actually reunite these children with their parents or family members that are US residents. NONE. The question should be what does ICE plan to do with them? Keep them for how long? Till what? Yeah the conditions are horrid…but are these conditions for permanent stay? Yeah, ask that….exactly how long do they keep children there and then what? Released to who?

    That’s another point that must be made..
    IF these children HAVE RELATIVES THAT ARE IN THE UNITED STATES..
    They are NOT being released to said relatives.

    The excuse given when people arrive seeking asylum and they are turned away is that we don’t have the facilities or capacity to handle them. Yet, amazingly, there is enough capacity to hold all those who, because they have been refused at legal points of entry, are so desperate they try other ways.

    Donald Trump has launched an unprecedented attack on Angela Merkel’s government, tweeting that “the people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration is rocking the already tenuous Berlin coalition”.
    While the US president has previously been openly critical of Germany’s export surplus and defence spending, he has refrained from openly criticising the country’s migration policy since taking office in 2017.
    In November 2014, during the US presidential campaign, Trump called Merkel’s decision to keep open the country’s borders to Syrian refugees in the summer of 2015 as “insane”.

    In his latest tweet, Trump also said “crime in Germany is way up”. In May, Germany’s interior ministry recorded the lowest crime levels since 1992.
    “Big mistake made all over Europe in allowing millions of people in who have so strongly and violently changed their culture!” he added.
    In a second tweet, Trump noted:

    We don’t want what is happening with immigration in Europe to happen with us!

    ndeed, the New York Times had an excellent piece over the weekend documenting how the president and his team decided to pull the trigger in recent months.

    [F]or George W. Bush and Barack Obama, the idea of crying children torn from their parents’ arms was simply too inhumane – and too politically perilous – to embrace as policy, and Mr. Trump, though he had made an immigration crackdown one of the central issues of his campaign, succumbed to the same reality, publicly dropping the idea after [White House Chief of Staff John Kelly’s comments in March] touched off a swift backlash.

    But advocates inside the administration, most prominently Stephen Miller, Mr. Trump’s senior policy adviser, never gave up on the idea. Last month, facing a sharp uptick in illegal border crossings, Mr. Trump ordered a new effort to criminally prosecute anyone who crossed the border unlawfully – with few exceptions for parents traveling with their minor children.

    We know when the president did this, we know why, and we know how. We even know who was helping drive the decision behind the scenes. Trump may be desperate to shift the blame for his policy to those who have nothing to do with it, but top members of his team have openly acknowledged that this was, and is, the White House’s idea.

    If you’re horrified by news of families being separated at the borders, here’s a bit of news you can use.

    First, the policy: It helps to be incredibly clear on what the law is, and what has and has not changed. When Donald Trump and Sarah Huckabee Sanders say that the policy of separating children from their parents upon entry is a law passed by Democrats that Democrats will not fix, they are lying.

    I know a number of you all are planning to join one of the various protests, actions, and/or demonstrations that will begin taking place as a result of the President’s family separation policy. So I wanted to re-up the post for anyone that missed it the first several times I posted it. I also saw a tweet, which I can’t find right now, from one of the protesters at the Vice President’s event last week in Ohio who said that the audience assaulted her and other protestors before event security came and escorted them out. So you need to prepare yourself that there may be violence if you protest at this type of event. I would recommend designating one member of your group to begin to record video as soon as the demonstration starts and for that person to do nothing but quietly stand and video events so there is a record and they don’t have to worry about being attacked. And one other person as the dedicated video recording person’s buddy so they can keep their head on a swivel and look out for that person’s wellbeing. Also, stay as close to the perimeter of the event, near an exit, and with your back to a wall if at all possible.
