    My sheltie is 16 years old today (life expectancy is 12 -14 years). We almost lost her last year when she was having seizures, but she was diagnosed with an insulinoma (pancreatic tumor) and has done fairly well just being on medications. But for some reason, the seizures caused her to lose most of her vision and now it’s all gone.

    She was still going for walks until a couple of months ago, and now she just isn’t up for it. But her appetite is still really good and she doesn’t seem to be in any pain.

    She sleeps most of the time now and she’s increasingly detached from us. I’m praying that she passes peacefully one of these nights. She deserves an easy passing.

    I’m trying to let nature run its course as long as she’s not in pain. Sometimes its hard to tell with dogs because they are so stoic. But I really don’t think she’s in any pain.

    What I’m having difficulty with is the detachment. I didn’t know that dogs did that.

    But she made it to 16, and I’m happy about that.

    Trump calls on AG Sessions to end Mueller probe ‘right now’

    Over the weekend, Donald Trump’s tweets about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe got a little manic, with the president tweeting a series of semi-coherent rants about the probe. It offered compelling evidence that the pressure is starting to take its roll.

    This morning, Trump’s missives took on an even more hysterical tone, culminating in rhetoric we haven’t seen the president use before.

    But it’s the Sessions tweet that stands out for a reason: a sitting American president – the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation – has now publicly called on the attorney general of the United States to immediately halt a special counsel probe.

    Somehow, in 2018, this isn’t the basis for a major national political crisis, in part because we know Jeff Sessions has already recused himself from the proceedings – making the president’s appeal practically meaningless – and in part because much of the political world has grown inured by Trump’s unhinged antics.

    NBC News’ Benjy Sarlin noted this morning that if the president’s messages “were leaked secret memos, it would be a huge scandal,” but since we’re reading Trump’s over-the-top instructions via Twitter, this somehow seems normal.

    If you thought the Trump administration couldn’t take any additional steps to undermine the Affordable Care Act, think again.

    The Trump administration is clearing the way for insurers to sell short-term health plans as a bargain alternative to pricey Obama-law policies for people struggling with high premiums.

    But the policies don’t have to cover existing medical conditions and offer limited benefits. It’s not certain if that’s going to translate into broad consumer appeal among people who need an individual policy.

    Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told Fox News this morning, “For many who’ve got pre-existing conditions or who have other health worries, the Obamacare plans might be right for them. We’re just providing more options.”

    Well, sort of. Short-term plans already existed under the Affordable Care Act, but they only last a few months, and they’re designed to serve as stopgap coverage. The Trump administration is changing the rules, opening the door to insurers offering “short-term” plans that cover 364 days, with the option of two annual renewals.

    First, these plans will be pretty awful. We’re talking about skimpy coverage that will leave Americans with huge medical bills in the event of a serious illness. That’s because the safeguards and consumer protections at the heart of “Obamacare” won’t apply to these plans.

    Second, those with pre-existing conditions generally won’t even be able to get these plans. If there’s anything close to an American consensus in the health care debate, it’s protecting people with pre-existing conditions, and this approach doesn’t.

      I hate stupidity no matter who is displaying it. I taught high school world history for at least 25 years, so I know that there were prosperous, highly organized kingdoms in Sub-Sahara Africa with schools, organized religious centers, libraries, medical systems and doctors, streets laid out on a grid system, centralized governments, etc. while Europeans were still living in hovels with no governments or economic systems. It pisses me off whenever I hear/read about someone denigrating and disparaging blacks from any region of the world.

    Trump obstructs justice in real time on Twitter

    I was completely working on something else for today’s post—I’ll still finish it—but I decided to sleep in late and was greeted with this tweet by Donnie Brasco.

    Now, Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow came out later and said this was just Trump’s “personal opinion,” and in no way indicated that he wished to obstruct the Mueller investigation. Yes. And I’m 6’9″ and play point guard for the Lakers.

    Bob Mueller is investigating if Trump’s tweets show a pattern of intimidation and obstruction. That was going to be tough sell… until Trump helpfully sent out a tweet intimidating Jeff Sessions and obstructing. A man with no impulse control, who’s never had to work a day in his life, is the worst kind of person around which to build a fascist takeover. He literally blurts out what Mueller needs to put another nail in his coffin. We should be grateful that Vladimir Putin used such a leaky vessel to attempt to subvert America.

    Even Saint Susan of the Perpetual Concerns was concerned.

    That moment when Susan Collins hears Trump’s Tweet on Sessions: “Jeez!” she gasped as she was read the tweet. “This is unbelievable.”

    Chipotle’s free guacamole promotion has made a lot of people pretty angry

    Chipotle has had a rough go for it for the last few years, from serious food safety concerns to a less-than-stellar reception to its first-ever queso.

    So the Mexican Grill chain has been trying to win back customers with various promotions. Thus, free guacamole for all on National Avocado Day was born! What could possibly go wrong?

    Apparently, a lot.

    Last Thursday, the chain announced that on July 31 its guacamole (which has always been an extra cost) would be free to anyone who ordered a meal through the app or online.

    But on Tuesday, things did not go so smoothly for all who wanted to cash in on the deal and by mid-day, there were rumblings on social media that the app and website were not accepting these orders — or giving anyone any free guacamole. Many app and website users have reported being greeted with a “technical difficulties” notification, and many have taken to Twitter to complain that even if they can get through on the app, there’s not even a space for the necessary “AVOCADO” promo code to be entered.

    And since the promotion was only designed for online orders, a lot of customers who went to Chipotle in person are venting their frustration with the deal.

    There is no liberal case for Brett Kavanaugh

    In the past few weeks, many conservative voices have spoken in support of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh. But so have some liberal lawyers, including some of our colleagues at Yale Law School. Why would left-leaning attorneys lend their authority to a judge who has an unmistakable record of hostility to core liberal causes, from abortion rights to voting rights, from environmental regulations to restraints on presidential power?

    In celebrating Kavanaugh, liberals may be acting out nostalgia for a long-gone bipartisan appointment process. They may be failing to admit the importance of values to judging, or they may be misreading Kavanaugh’s record. Perhaps they think he is the best nominee they can hope for, or that his personal virtue recommends his confirmation. Then again, maybe they are simply seeking influence. None of these are creditable reasons: There is no liberal case for Kavanaugh.

    Given what we know of Kavanaugh’s constitutional vision, and his judicial record, liberals should not support his appointment. As many commentators have argued, Kavanaugh has extreme views on matters ranging from gun rights to abortion to presidential power to the role of money in politics.

    Those views, as well as his attitude toward precedent, were on full display in Garza vs. Hargen, the case of a 17-year-old girl in federal immigration detention who wanted an abortion to which she was entitled under state law. Existing doctrine says that the government may not impose an “undue burden” on a woman’s access to abortion. Against the views of six members of his court, who prevailed, Kavanaugh argued that the government’s refusal to allow the young woman to leave the custody of immigration detention to obtain a legal abortion imposed no such burden.

    Seth Owen, 18, said attending college has always been his “life goal,” one he has been working on diligently since elementary school.

    “I was the nerd in fifth grade who walked around recess talking about how I wanted to be an astronaut,” Owen told NBC News. “I was always in a textbook, always in the library, always reading something.”

    With a 4.16 GPA and an acceptance letter from Georgetown University, it seemed like the high school valedictorian’s dream would become a reality. But when he received his financial aid package from the prestigious school, a different reality set in: The financial aid package had been determined based on the expected contribution of his family, a family he said drove him out of his home due to his sexuality.

    “I started to cry, because I realized there was no way that I could go to college,” he said. “Georgetown was my only option, because I had already denied my other acceptances.”

    With Georgetown refusing to amend his financial aid package and $20,000 needed for his first year’s tuition, the Florida teen thought his situation was hopeless. But then his former biology teacher stepped in.

    “Seth was just a kid that really stood out to me,” the teacher, Jane Martin, told NBC News. “He was super ambitious and was always trying to go above and beyond to make sure he could be as successful as possible.”

    Martin set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Owen’s tuition, hoping to “make the impossible possible,” and she succeeded. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraising page raised over $50,000 — more than double its initial $20,000 goal.

    At a campaign rally in Florida last night, Donald Trump made quite a few unfortunate comments, but his unscripted remark about grocery stores was especially memorable.

    “You know, if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card, you need ID. You go out and you want to buy anything, you need ID and you need your picture,” Trump said at Tuesday night’s Tampa, Fla., rally to drum up support for GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis’ gubernatorial bid.

    He was – in the moment – throwing his support behind tougher ID requirements for voters.

    “Only American citizens should vote in American elections. The time has come for voter ID like everything else,” Trump said.

    But even more important is the fact that the president is still responding to an imaginary problem, calling for new national voting restrictions that would serve no legitimate purpose.

    Indeed, American elections do face a real threat, but it comes from foreign adversaries. On that front, as NBC News reported last week, “there is no coherent Trump administration strategy to combat foreign election interference – and no single person or agency in charge.”

        I also cannot overlook the fact that many in our MSM that are now whining about these Trump-instigated attacks on them failed to do their jobs in thoroughly vetting him in 2015 and 2016. In a way, they brought this on themselves. They should have been exposing all of his ugliness when he was running for POTUS instead, they were focused on his insane antics and ignoring his many lifetime ethical problems.

      The ‘economy’ voters are the oligarchs and plutocrats who’ve already collected the first of the promised tax cuts – with another in the offing …

      The poor supporters really don’t care about the economy… for them, more than anything, it’s all about their racial insecurities and reasserting and safeguarding their ‘supremacy’… and top-perch spot on the totem pole..

      They don’t mind starving as long as their top-perch ‘superior’ status is assured..
