    To Josh Collins and his wife, Jessica Salazar Collins, something seemed off about the Bank of America mailer.

    On the phone, the bank operator told Josh that the bank would unfreeze his money, but that the account wouldn’t be accessible until 2 a.m. the next morning. Jessica said the couple had $12 in cash on them. It was noon.

    The next day, Jessica tried to buy movie tickets and again had her card declined. She got back on the phone with the bank, which passed her between multiple people who couldn’t help. By then, her bill pay had been deactivated. So she and Josh went to a Bank of America storefront looking for help.

    That’s where a service representative pulled up Josh’s customer profile.

    “Right away she turned the screen around and said, ‘look, this is why your accounts are frozen,'” Jessica said. “There was a little flag above ‘citizenship.'”

    Under the flag were the same questions that had appeared on the mailer. “Are you a U.S. citizen?” and “do you have dual citizenship?”

    Jessica and Josh said that the bank’s explanation was that it was updating its customer profiles, and that all users would eventually be asked about their citizenship. But that didn’t answer why Josh had gotten the questions, and not Jessica, or why he’d been asked after nearly 20 years banking with the company.

    Josh said he wondered why his bank needs to know whether he is a citizen. The bank isn’t a government or law-enforcement agency. He isn’t one of its employees.

    Modern-day redlining: How banks block people of color from homeownership

    No matter their location, loan applicants told similar stories, describing an uphill battle with loan officers who they said seemed to be fishing for a reason to say no.

    “I had a fair amount of savings and still had so much trouble just left and right,” said Rachelle Faroul, a 33-year-old black woman who was rejected twice by lenders when she tried to buy a brick row house close to Malcolm X Park in Philadelphia, where African Americans were 2.7 times as likely as whites to be denied a conventional mortgage.

    Philadelphia was one of the largest cities in America where African Americans were disproportionately turned away when they tried to buy a home. African Americans and non-Hispanic whites make up a similar share of the population there, but the data showed whites received 10 times as many conventional mortgage loans in 2015 and 2016.

    When Faroul applied for a loan in April 2016, she thought she was an ideal candidate. She holds a degree from Northwestern University, had a good credit score and estimates she was making $60,000 a year while teaching computer programming as a contractor for Rutgers University. Still, her initial loan application was denied by Philadelphia Mortgage Advisors, an independent broker that made nearly 90 percent of its loans to whites in 2015 and 2016.

    “I’m sorry,” broker Angela Tobin wrote to Faroul in an email. Faroul’s contract income wasn’t consistent enough, she said. So Faroul got a full-time job at the University of Pennsylvania managing a million-dollar grant.

    But that still wasn’t enough. When she tried again a year later, this time at Santander Bank, a Spanish firm with U.S. headquarters in Boston, the process dragged on for months. Eventually, an unpaid $284 electric bill appeared on Faroul’s credit report. She paid the bill right away, but it still tanked her credit score, and the bank said it couldn’t move forward.

    Things suddenly took a turn for the better after Faroul’s partner, Hanako Franz, agreed to sign onto her loan application. At the time, Franz – who is half white, half Japanese – was working part time for a grocery store. Her most recent pay stub showed a biweekly income of $144.65. Faroul was paying for her health insurance.

    The loan officer had “completely stopped answering Rachelle’s phone calls, just ignored all of them,” Franz said. “And then I called, and he answered almost immediately. And is so friendly.”

    A few weeks later, the couple got the loan from Santander and bought a three-bedroom fixer-upper. But Faroul remains bitter.

    “It was humiliating,” she said. “I was made to feel like nothing that I was contributing was of value, like I didn’t matter.”

    When my mortgage consultant was trying to find the reason(s) for why I was denied, of course I knew exactly what it was. I can’t prove it. The lending process is based on so many seemingly arbitrary variables and algorithms that it’s near impossible to make a definitive and damning determination about a singular case. But I know, in my bones, that a 39-year-old white man with my income, my credit (good, not great), my bank statements, my tax returns, my wife, my life, wouldn’t have been denied by that bank. And he wouldn’t have had to provide that bank with multiple handwritten letters verifying his employment. And he wouldn’t have had to wonder if there was a way to complete the loan application without noting his race.

    There are few things I’ve done that have made me as hyper-cognizant of my blackness than the entire home-buying process. I went in with trepidation, knowing the history of homeownership-while-black and the obstacles America places in your way. I predicted that my relatively nontraditional means of income would be an issue, and it was. I wondered if my type of work—which often involves me saying things many white people find uncomfortable and insulting—would be an issue. And I watched and waited and cringed and winced as these collections of white people—the real estate company, the mortgage company, the settlement people, the bank—went through my records like a butcher inspecting and vetting a porterhouse steak.

    My story—this story—had a good ending. After being denied by the bank he usually works with, my mortgage consultant told me about another consultant who worked with a bank that might be able to do my loan. He passed me on to them and it worked. We were even able to meet our original closing date. We moved into our house last weekend. I am writing this, in fact, while sitting at a countertop in my new kitchen.

    This is a good thing. But sometimes, existing-while-black means that even sometimes good things come attached with sour aftertastes. I check every box that you’re supposed to be able to check. I have a generous and steady income, plus multiple revenue sources to supplement it. I have a sizable amount of money in savings. I have money in escrow, and I don’t even know what the fuck escrow means. I am married to an entrepreneur with an advanced degree. We have one child. And none of this mattered.

      When my ex and I tried to buy a home in an all-white neighborhood here in Middle GA, the realtor was fine with that, but the neighbors weren’t. He later told us that he’d been contacted by some of the neighbors, and that they’d told him he should have been ashamed for trying to sell that home to a black married couple. I was teaching and my ex worked at the local AFB. We could definitely afford the house. The neighbors joined together and bought the house so we couldn’t move in. We had a Jewish realtor who thought what they did was wrong, so he told us all about it. We bought another home in a neighborhood that was all white. We lived there for years before any of the neighbors knew we were black because we left early in the morning to get to our jobs on time. We both worked in a another city. It’s a d*mn shame that this kind of mess still happens, but it does. It’s not whether a POC can afford the house they want to buy, it’s all about keeping POCs out of certain neighborhoods.

        I want to add another example of something that happened to me at a car dealership here. In 2016, I decided to buy my daughter a new car so she could travel from Alabama to GA [home] without having any mechanical problems, and she could go from Montgomery to Birmingham to earn another degree. Well, I drove to the Ford dealership, parked my car and got out. There were quite a few salesmen inside that saw me outside. The black salesman was the only one that came out to talk to me. I pointed to a car on the lot, told him I wanted to purchase it. We went inside, he ran my credit, I put a $3,000 down payment on the vehicle and bought the car that day. I had to leave it on the lot for about two weeks until my daughter came to get it. After they found out how good my credit rating was and the amount of the down payment I’d made without blinking an eye, the other salesmen were looking at me with “new” eyes and were suddenly smiling and very friendly to me. I went to talk to the finance manager and negotiated the exact monthly payment I wanted, although he tried to talk me into a higher payment. After I refused, he suddenly found a way to give me full coverage on the car to cover mechanical issues at the price I wanted to pay. After those do-nothing tools discovered I was in the 97% credit percentile, their whole attitude toward me changed. Of course, they had Fox News on the main TV screen in the lobby. I hope they learned that you cannot look at someone and determine how much money they have.

    If I am ever lucky enough to meet God, of the myriad questions I plan to ask Him (most, btw, involve lactose intolerance), one of the more pressing will be: Where exactly is the bottomless pit containing the endless cadre of thirsty, feckless, shameless, stupid and silly niggas willing to meet with Donald Trump located? Is it somewhere obvious, like maybe Detroit or Milwaukee or the Calabasas? Or maybe, is the ceaseless pit of fuckshit that these niggas emerge from found in the middle of an oil field in Juneau, Alaska?

    As absurd as that sounds, how else can you explain quotes like this one, from ABC News, about Trump’s meeting with a group of black pastors and ministers earlier today:

    At a meeting with inner city pastors, Darrell Scott of Ohio tells Trump he is “the most pro-black president” in recent history who “actually wants to prove something to our community.” “The last president didn’t feel like he had to,” Scott told the President.

    I am no longer flabbergasted and horrified that these men (and women, but mostly men) don’t realize that these types of meetings and photo ops are literally nothing but a method for Trump to have blacks genuflect to him and also provide him an alibi for charges of racism. Nope. The bottom well of feckless niggas doesn’t actually exist. They’re just from a Bluetooth headset factory, and Donald Trump is the universal modem. This makes the most sense.

    Immigration crackdown: U.S. soldier honored for service could be heading for ICE custody

    She had been bracing for the bad news. It landed last month.

    U.S. Army Spec. Yea Ji Sea, a medic at the Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, was called in to her commander’s office. The senior officer explained to the 29-year-old that her time in uniform was over. He said he was sorry, Sea would later recall. He promised she still had the military’s support. But for now, Sea was being honorably discharged because of her immigration status.

    Born in South Korea, Sea had come to the United States on a visitor’s visa in 1998, when she was 9. At 26, she joined the Army, hoping to tap a program allowing active-duty service members to earn their U.S. citizenship. But Sea’s naturalization application had been stymied throughout her decorated 4½ years as a soldier. Now she was out.

    Absorbing the news, Sea was initially optimistic that her chosen career in the service would not be cut short. Since her first hours of basic training, the Army had drilled into Sea ideas about service and duty, placing the Army and country first. As she explained to The Washington Post this week, Sea figured the loyalty ran both ways — the Army would fix this.

    “I wasn’t so worried,” she explained. “I thought I really had their support when they said that. I thought it was going to be somehow okay, that they wouldn’t kick me out because it’s just not right, and it’s legally wrong. I believed them because I was stupid.”

    That optimism has drained away.

    Following the news of her discharge, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in July on the specialist’s behalf against the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The federal complaint argues that U.S. officials have improperly failed to process her rightful naturalization application. The complaint asks a judge to force the government to rule on her application within 20 days.

    Her attorney maintains that Sea’s situation syncs with a wider pattern of booting immigrant service members from the military because of President Trump’s hard-line immigration policy.

    “They’re trying to discharge her now, and it’s part of a larger anti-immigration scheme of the Trump administration,” Sameer Ahmed, a staff attorney with the ACLU of Southern California, told The Post.

      I posted on Facebook and Twitter last night about a military spouse who is facing deportation tomorrow. Her husband is a naturalized citizen and a Marine vet. He has also described himself as a conservative and voted for Trump. He now regrets that decision, but it’s too late. He handed a letter to one of Trump’s aides in Florida the other day at Trump’s rally in Florida, and the couple is hoping Trump acts to stop the wife’s deportation. Good luck with that. Neither seems to understand that Trump doesn’t like to read anything.

    From the policy of separating immigrant families, to limiting the power of labor unions, to naming the next justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, this summer the DeVos family name has been all over the news.

    Over the years, the parents, in-laws and husband of U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos have given hundreds of millions of dollars to conservative causes. And many of those causes are front and center of policy initiatives and goals of the Trump administration right now.

    Trump-aligned pastor inexplicably praises president as ‘pro-black’

    Just last week, Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyers and personal “fixer,” released an audio recording from the campaign season, featuring a candid chat with the future president about a possible payment involving one of Trump’s former alleged mistresses. But that wasn’t the only thing on the tape.

    We also heard part of a behind-the-scenes conversation in which the then-candidate talked about using Darrell Scott, a Christian pastor associated with the Republican campaign in 2016, for purposes that weren’t altogether clear in the recording. There was no ambiguity, however, about Trump’s sentiment: he saw the conservative Ohio pastor as an ally.

    With this recent history in mind, Scott was at the White House yesterday for a roundtable discussion with nearly 20 inner city pastors and faith leaders, where he used rhetoric that no doubt made the president happy, but which is difficult to take seriously.

    The largely pro-Trump group present at the public event praised the president for his efforts on criminal justice reform and the economy. “This is probably the most pro-active administration regarding urban America and the faith-based community in my lifetime,” said Scott, a Trump surrogate during the 2016 campaign.

    “This president actually wants to prove something to our community, our faith-based community and our ethnic community. The last president didn’t feel like he had to. He got a pass,” he added, referring to President Obama. “This is probably going to be … the most pro-black president I’ve seen in my lifetime.”

    As best as I can tell, this wasn’t a joke. The pastor actually expected people to believe what he was saying.

    Trump’s wildlife protection council is mostly trophy hunters and donors, lawsuit says

    Advocacy groups sued the Trump administration Wednesday over what they call the biased makeup of a wildlife advisory council.

    The lawsuit filed in a U.S. District Court in New York alleges that the International Wildlife Conservation Council is made of “hunting enthusiasts” and “politically-connected donors” who are likely to craft favorable policy for groups that profit from hunting “imperiled animals,” the complaint said.

    “It’s very obvious [the 17-member council has] an intent to undermine some of the protections put in place” based on the affiliations of its members, Zak Smith, senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, told The Washington Post. Smith said the law requires advisory councils to be balanced so that all sides are represented.

    The panel was announced in November 2017 by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Its purpose is to increase American awareness of conservation, ensure the support of hunting as a tool to combat illegal poaching and recommend the “removal of barriers to the importation into the United States of legally hunted wildlife,” the charter said. In its ranks are a National Rifle Association official, six members who are listed as active hunters and five members who are said to represent wildlife conservation groups.

    Reminder: Trump does rallies when he feels particularly terrible. He’s trying to feel the bucket with no bottom that is his entirely absent self-esteem.

    Ohio State University placed its head football coach, Urban Meyer, on paid administrative leave on Wednesday as it investigates whether he was aware of domestic violence allegations against fired assistant coach Zach Smith.

    “The university is conducting an investigation into these allegations,” Ohio State said. Ryan Day, who has been the team’s offensive coordinator, will be acting head football coach while Meyer is on leave.

    “We are focused on supporting our players and on getting to the truth as expeditiously as possible,” the university said.

      Good morning, everyone. I bought Carson a ball and he loves it. He throws it and then looks to Haley to give it back. I took 3 boxes of capri sun. He drank until it’s gone and then cries if you take the enemy packet away. My little Carson!
