Today the University community gathered to dedicate a statue and scholarship in honor of our amazing alum Katherine Johnson. The statue is located on WVSU’s quad, where it will serve as a source of inspiration to current and future students of all that is possible through dedication, hard work and perseverance.

Katherine Johnson is amused by the question. A smile quickly spreads across her face.
As she approaches her 100th birthday, does she have any explanation for her longevity and health?
“I’m just lucky – the Lord likes me,” she said. Then, after a pause to reflect, she added, “And I like him.”
The former NASA Langley Research Center “human computer” – whose intricate, done-by-hand calculations helped send men into space and bring them back safely – turns 100 today. She plans to mark the milestone with a trip to West Virginia State University, where her alma mater will unveil a statue of her likeness and endow a scholarship in her name. School president Anthony Jenkins calls her “someone who changed America.”

OMG! I just now saw this. Yes, I absolutely know the place. It is on the St. John’s River, across from downtown. It was built after I left Jax, of course, but we would go there when I visited family.
Nope, I was wrong. The Landing is on the same side of the St. John’s River as downtown Jax and you could actually say it is in the south side of the downtown area.

I want to be very clear on why I’m posting this.
John McCain, like very other politician came into political power with a HUGE responsibility for said POWER that is given them in their roles to help govern and serve Americans.
Actions and policies you support/don’t support have far-reaching consequences. And we’ve seen what these politicians will do to gain power to the detriment of their constituents, even this country.

His actions of hooking of up with the ignorant, hateful Sarah Palin has far-reaching consequences that continue reverberating today.

The thoughts, words, deeds you send out, they come back to you, in some form or fashion. They come back in minutes, days, weeks, months, years, lifetimes.
You’re accountable; you’re responsible.
Palin is a part of this LEGACY McCain left us. And I for one, will not forget this.

You’re absolutely right, Ametia. Palin is a huge part of McCain’s legacy. He owns it and always will.
So there is this huge outpouring of love and respect and sympathy for McCain and his family in these first days after his passing. Everyone who feels obligated to say something about it is doing so. But that will settle down before too long and John McCain’s legacy will eventually be subject to the more objective scrutiny of historians.
McCain has been my Senator for a long time and I certainly haven’t felt “represented”. But in all fairness, I would say that McCain had his moments when he tried to do what was right, and he actually believed in bi-partisanship which is almost non-existent in politics these days.
But, yes indeed, there are far reaching consequences for which he must be held accountable. In addition to giving a national platform to hate and ignorance via Sarah Palin, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and didn’t admit he was wrong until he published his memoirs 15 years later. Apparently in that same book (which I will never read), he also expressed remorse about Palin, wishing he had picked Joe Lieberman instead. His remorse, of course, is meaningless.
I feel confident that historians will get it right. Facts are stubborn, as they say.

Something the anti-vaxxers don’t realize is that when they reject having their kids vaccinated, they’re putting vulnerable others’ health in danger such as those that were born with weakened immune systems, for example, other kids that were born with leukemia, who were born that way and didn’t played a role in being born that way.
