Thursday Open Thread: Michelle Obama On Donald Trump’s Comments: ‘Enough Is Enough’

Hat tip & from Eliihaas-THANK YOU!

And our First Lady, Michelle Obama:

Wow, fam! Just watched this again and it’s even more powerful and more relevant than ever… And takes on what’s happening with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford … Kavanaugh and the treasonous buffoon.

“…as citizens who think that our nation’s leaders should meet basic standards of human decency…
This is not something that we can ignore. It’s not something we can just sweep under the rug as just another disturbing footnote in a sad season. This was a powerful individual speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behavior, and actually bragging about kissing and groping women..

And to make matters worse, it now seems very clear that this isn’t an isolated incident. It’s one of countless examples of how he has treated women his whole life… The disrespect of our ambitions and intellect. The belief that you can do anything you want to a woman.

We thought all of that was ancient history, didn’t we?

..this is not normal. This is not politics as usual. This is disgraceful. And it doesn’t matter what party you belong to – Democrat, Republican, independent – no woman deserves to be treated this way..
…this isn’t about politics. It’s about basic human decency. It’s about right and wrong.
What message are our little girls hearing about who they should look like, how they should act? What lessons are they learning about their value as professionals, as human beings, about their dreams and aspirations?
And how is this affecting men and boys in this country? Because I can tell you that the men in my life do not talk about women like this. And I know that my family is not unusual. And to dismiss this as everyday locker-room talk is an insult to decent men everywhere.

The men that you and I know don’t treat women this way. They are loving fathers who are sickened by the thought of their daughters being exposed to this.. They are husbands and brothers and sons who don’t tolerate women being demeaned and disrespected. And like us, these men are worried about the impact this is having on our boys who are looking for role models of what it means to be a man.
Because let’s be very clear: strong men – men who are truly role models – don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful.

…if we let Hillary’s opponent win this election, then we are sending a clear message to our kids that everything they’re seeing and hearing is perfectly OK… We’re telling our sons that it’s OK to humiliate women. We’re telling our daughters that this is how they deserve to be treated. We’re telling all our kids that bigotry and bullying are perfectly acceptable in the leader of their country. Is that what we want for our children?

And remember, we won’t just be setting a bad example for our kids, but for our entire world. Because for so long, America has been a model for countries across the globe, pushing them to educate their girls, insisting that they give more rights to their women. But if we have a president who routinely degrades women, who brags about sexually assaulting women, then how can we maintain our moral authority in the world? How can we continue to be a beacon of freedom and justice and human dignity?

…the choice you make November 8 could determine whether we have a president who treats people with respect – or not.

On November 8, we can show our children that here in America, we reject hatred and fear – and in difficult times, we don’t discard our highest ideals. No, we rise up to meet them. We rise up to perfect our union.
Hope is important for our young people. And we deserve a president who can see those truths in us – a president who can bring us together and bring out the very best in us…”

I have to believe the GOP has decided that the 5-3 radical conservative majority on SCOTUS is worth losing the Senate majority if it comes to that. But they might also be feeling very confident that they won’t lose the Senate majority in the midterms and are probably safe until 2020.

I remember sitting by myself here at home watching the 2016 election returns on CNN. I was certain Hillary Clinton was going to win, not by a landslide, but she would definitely win.

So I was watching the returns from Virginia, Tim Kaine’s state, and Trump was ahead. Hillary did eventually win VA, but I thought that was the first sign of trouble.

And, of course, it got worse from there.

And when it was clear that Trump would win, I so distinctly remember thinking that SCOTUS was lost, that was literally my first thought. Merrick Garland would not get a hearing, Scalia’s seat would be stolen. And in four years Trump would very likely get another nomination giving the radical conservatives their SCOTUS majority.

Good Lord, where do we go from here?

    • ametia says:

These women need to get to the polls & vote

      • Liza says:

        That’s what I was thinking.

The day of reckoning is one month away.

And when it’s done we will either be celebrating or weeping, wailing, and gnashing our teeth. We need to vote like there’s no tomorrow.

  5. Ametia says:

Who is this decrepit old white man 👴 on The Beat’ saying no matter the Kavanaugh outcome, we should respect the outcome? Really? I can’t with the foolishness

    • Liza says:

Reminds me of how we are supposed to “respect the jury’s decision” when they fail to convict cops and white supremacists who murder people.

      • Ametia says:

Yes, it’s “we’re going to say & do whatever we want to you, kill you if necessary& you’re gonna lay back & take it.

        So SICK

  6. Liza says:

I remember when Michelle Obama gave this speech. It’s really sad to look at where we are now, the government sinking deeper and deeper into corruption.

“But if we have a president who routinely degrades women, who brags about sexually assaulting women, then how can we maintain our moral authority in the world? How can we continue to be a beacon of freedom and justice and human dignity?”

Good questions and now we know the answers.

The world is laughing at us.

Some of these media folks are so complicit, it’s mind-blowing..

They started off since yesterday ….trying to help the repugs move the Kavanaugh confirmation along ….and this morning, out in full force trying to depress Democrats and scare/strongarm ‘Red State Dems’ into submission… ginning up fake narratives about how ‘Red State Democrats’ can’t possibly ‘survive’ if they dare vote no… Talking up the treasonous buffoon and his ‘prowess’, ‘popularity’, and ‘strangle-hold ’ on Red State Dems and their States..

    Disgraceful..

Scarborough, Mika, Willie Geist, Jonathan Lemire, Kasie Hunt, Garrett Hake, Kelly O’Donnell, Katy Tur, Robert Costa, Stephanie Ruhle, the CNN crew.. etc. etc. etc.

    Crazy..

And then Heidi Heitkamp announces she’d be a no, and they were stunned, and thrown off their corporate masters directives/messaging …but still scrambling to ramp up the FOX ‘news’ polls that were expectedly, unfavorable to Dems.. And suddenly showing accelerated ‘enthusiasm’ among repugs.. 🙄🙄..

Please note fam, repugs now make up all of 35% of the voting population – if even that… There are still more of us than them… And if we all vote, we win …no matter how much more triggered they are about voting… Because according to a visibly irritated Scarborough and Mika, Dems ‘messed up’ by ‘stirring’ previously sleeping repugs who are now ‘triggered’ because we refused to back down, and dared hold an undeserving nominee to the highest court of the land, accountable…

The media is awful.. And several of them are showing their obeisance to the treasonous buffoon, his faceless deep-pocketed right-wing/neocon sub-owners, and their white supremacist sensibilities..

It is also true that many of them have relationships with many of these right-wing/neocon D.C operatives.. Mika certainly does… It is plausible that she has social ties to Kavanaugh etc, …

Remember how she and Scarborough were all yucking it up with man of that hour, Fire and Fury’s Michael Wolff… until of course Nikki Haley called in a favor to Mika and that awful GOP operative, Susan del Percio who then out of the blue, for no reason, started attacking Wolff, for the exact thing they were tee-hee-ing with him the week before.. the poor guy was left in a daze at the sudden turn..

Notice also that weasel Michael Schmidt of the New York Times that dropped the anti-Rosenstein exposé giving buffoon an out to fire Rosenstein, has practically fallen off the face of the earth… No cameos since on any t.v shows…

    • Ametia says:

From the moment that hearing was over, the cable network 🐒. Started showing their asses, undoing any gains for truth, by hedging & backsliding. I’m s all a game go them.

See, this is why we 😘 miss you, when you’re not on 3 Chics, dropping it like it’s TRUTH

The voodoo done to Lindsey Graham is strrrrrong…

Whatever it is, it’s only a matter of time before he starts to unravel..

Next thing you know he’ll be so out of it he’ll be standing in the rotunda crazed and ripping his clothes off, laughing hysterically…

I once watched this poor guy in San Francisco just lose it ….it was heartbreaking …one minute he’s neatly dressed, walking on the sidewalk, and next thing, he’s ripping his clothes off right there on the street.. And almost 10 years later, he’s still on that corner, his long blonde hair all knotted, shirtless… but now he has a little player that plays Set it off on a loop.. And he just stands to the side, bothering no one, content and peaceful, smoking, and alternately doing the robot and break-dancing to Set it off.. oblivious to the world around him…

Bishop Orin Hatch of the land of multiple wives is attesting to Kavanaugh’s ‘intellect’ and ‘qualification’, but noticeably says absolutely nothing about his character… hmmmm..

  10. eliihass says:

Look at the faces of Grassely, Hatch, Cornyn, Lee, Tillis… Not exactly the faces of those confident in their decision..

All look ashen, and sound like the wind’s been taken out of them…

It’s alternately protestation, pleading, blaming, protestation, pleading, blaming, denial..

    Something’s up fam..

The repulsive are never this subdued …and esoecually not when they’re in charge..

  11. eliihass says:

Anyone else notice that Mitch McConnell just doesn’t seem his usual cocksure, gleeful self… He’s shaky and even greasier and duller than ever.. Something’s up with him fam… and not in any kind of positive way..

  12. eliihass says:

Katy Tur repeatedly quoting a bloody FOX poll …in response to news that Heidi Heitkamp of No. Dakota is a NO on Kavanaugh..

And now she has that alt-right Jonathan Lemire and alt-right Steve ‘it’s bad news for Democrats’ Kornacki, to ‘discuss’ the ‘certain peril’ of Heidi voting no..

How is the media so blatantly doing the bidding of a treasonous buffoon, and the work of the repug whip..?

And good for Heidi’s brother calling in to put Katy Tur in her place..

    Finally, a man of honor..

Heidi’s brother says that if she loses her seat for voting correctly against Kavanaugh, ‘at least she can look herself in the mirror as she brushes her teeth the morning after’…

GOP swing votes Sens. Flake and Collins express satisfaction with FBI report, increasing odds of Kavanaugh confirmation this weekend
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who has not indicated how she would vote, said that “It appears to be a very thorough investigation but I’m going back later to personally read the interviews.”

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) told reporters, “We’ve seen no additional corroborating information.”

Collins, Flake and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) are the critical votes that could ensure Brett M. Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

    • Liza says:

Flake, Collins, and Murkowski are collaborators. Period. I don’t know why they bother to pretend otherwise.

      • eliihass says:

Or why supposedly thinking folks repeatedly place their hopes on these cowards.. even as they never really ever come through on the right side of things..

More reason to call the Senate. Here are some numbers:

    Collins – 202-224-2523
    Flake – 202-224-4521
Murkowski – 202-224-6665 (To leave a message for her, you need to press 2 for messages from people who want responses; she doesn’t give you an option for someone who doesn’t want a response.)
Sasse – 202-224-4224 (added because he gave a floor statement last night that suggests he might at least be a possible no)

You can reach your own Senators by calling 202-224-3121 and asking for their offices.

Following report, Trump crafts underwhelming response to fraud allegations
    10/03/18 12:48 PM—UPDATED 10/03/18 12:53 PM
    By Steve Benen

The latest reporting from the New York Times on Donald Trump’s finances is absolutely brutal. Based on exhaustive research, the newspaper uncovered evidence of “dubious tax schemes” and “outright fraud” that Trump exploited to receive hundreds of millions of dollars from his father.

The findings paint a picture in which the president, far from the self-made man he pretends to be, relied heavily on illegal handouts. At the heart of the story is the prospect of criminal fraud, criminal tax evasion, and money laundering, which the American president exploited to fuel his rise to power.

Given that the Times’ reporting effectively made Trump look like a criminal, I was eager to see the White House’s response. Last night, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a written statement condemning “the failing New York Times” – these folks do strive for message consistency – for publishing a “misleading attack.” Her statement didn’t point to any factual errors, though, Sanders quickly changed the subject to the nation’s low unemployment rate.

This morning, the president himself weighed in via Twitter.

“The Failing New York Times did something I have never seen done before. They used the concept of ‘time value of money’ in doing a very old, boring and often told hit piece on me.

“Added up, this means that 97% of their stories on me are bad. Never recovered from bad election call!”

    ……………………

The Center for America Progress’ Seth Hanlon, a veteran of the Obama White House, added this morning that the IRS “uses the ‘time value of money’ concept and charges compounding interest on unpaid taxes.”

Politico’s report noted, “[I]t’s not clear why Trump fixated on that idea.”

My thought exactly. The paper of record just published an indictment of sorts that characterizes the nation’s president as a fraud and a cheat. In response, Trump is puzzled that the newspaper relied to the “time value of money” to make its case? That’s the response?

Meanwhile, NBC News reported this morning that the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is reviewing the allegations raised in the New York Times’ reporting

Republicans set schedule for viewing FBI Kavanaugh report

Rachel Maddow reports breaking news that Mitch McConnell has announced that the FBI has submitted its report, as Chuck Grassley has set a schedule for the report’s viewing, and protesters against Kavanaugh’s confirmation hold vigils across the United States.

  18. rikyrah says:

Reason for hacking case referral to Mueller investigation unclear

Ben Schreckinger, national political correspondent for Politico, talks with Rachel Maddow about the FBI referring the case of the hacking of an anti-Trump Republican to Robert Mueller’s Trump Russia investigation.

  19. rikyrah says:

Kavanaugh fails own test of judicial temperament

Rachel Maddow compares the standards for being a judge, as laid out by Brett Kavanaugh in a 2015 speech, with his unhinged, partisan rant before the Senate Judicial Committee.

  20. rikyrah says:

Principles aside, FBI bends to pressure, Republicans have learned

Rachel Maddow notes that the FBI investigation into Brett Kavanaugh will not be made public according to FBI rules, though as Republicans have learned by now (and as the Hillary Clinton campaign can attest), FBI rules bend under pressure.
