Friday Open Thread | Ex-Florida GOP chair shreds Trump: The worst “social poison to afflict our country in decades”

The former chairman of the Florida Republican Party on Thursday issued a scathing rebuke of President Trump, calling him “despicable” and “social poison.”

Al Cardenas, a frequent Trump critic, tweeted his comment in response to the president’s new campaign ad on immigration.

“You are a despicable divider; the worse social poison to afflict our country in decades,” Cardenas tweeted in a post that has since been deleted. “This ad, and your full approval of it, will condemn you and your bigoted legacy forever in the annals of America’s history books.”

The campaign ad that Cardenas referred to in his tweet features clips from the expletive-laden trial of Luis Bracamontes, a deported Mexican man who returned to the U.S. and killed two sheriff’s deputies in 2014. It also shows sometimes violent footage of crowds of migrants.

“Democrats let him stay … Who else would Democrats let in?” the ad asks.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez blasted the ad in an interview on Wednesday, calling it the “dog-whistle of all dog-whistles.”

Cardenas, a lawyer and lobbyist who also served as a political appointee in the Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations and as chairman of the American Conservative Union, was a top adviser to Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign.

Cardenas is considered one of the most influential Latino Republicans.

I have been watching the Florida Governor race…
I am impressed with Gillum. He has a talent. He stands up for himself. Has the ability to get his opponent..and does it all without being able to get labeled as

    ” The Angry Black Man”

That takes skill. Gillum is a dark skinned Black Man.

A ” Black from a distance” Black Man.

Every racist trope of the Black brute is in an image that looks like Gillum.

You can’t talk about his ability to be strong, yet not get labeled, because that would mean that you would have to admit that unsaid bias. It would be to admit that colorism is very real, which we know that it is.

But, it is a talent, and puts Gillum a couple of tiers above your regular politician. If he can pull this off….
The GOP has reason to be terrified of him.

I could write forever on what a Stacey Abrams victory would mean. It’s still mixing in my mind. Watching Oprah yesterday got me all in my feelings.

I’ve been watching Andrew Gillum too and I see the same things.

It is very rare, that mix of southern charm, razor sharp intelligence and street smarts.

I don’t know where these people come from, folks like Gillum, Stacey Abrams, and O’Rourke, but I’m glad they stepped up. It certainly gives us hope.

      • Liza says:

Better said, it is just amazing to me that people like Andrew Gillum, Stacey Abrams, and Beto O’Rourke, all of whom are exceptional talents, are willing to step into the horror that is now our politics.

You should see the senate campaign in Arizona (McSally and Sinema). The GOP is running the dirtiest campaign I’ve ever seen in this state, and there have been some bad ones.

But I suppose that is their goal, to intimidate potential Democratic candidates.
