Friday Open Thread | About Our Broken Hearts…

It’s taken me awhile to write this, but I’ll end the week with it.

We have the apparent loss by Beto.

I don’t believe that Beto actually lost. I believe that there were shenanigans.

But, even if I did believe that he legitimately lost, there is absolutely no reason why Beto should apologize.

His candidacy and campaign were the stuff of dreams. He literally did everything that he could to win this race. He put his heart and soul into the campaign. Not only that, but he built a GOTV apparatus FROM SCRATCH. In a state like TEXAS? Do you know how hard that is? What kind of organization and planning that it took?

Beto O’Rourke probably will never read this, but I want to say thank you.

I want to thank him for the people whose lives will be impacted and changed because Beto O’Rouke decided to run for the Senate.

I’m talking about all the people who will be impacted by the people now in positions that they wouldn’t have been if Beto hadn’t of run and had coattails.

There are few systems that have as disparate impact upon the Black community than the Criminal Justice System. The person sitting on the other side of the bench can have a profound impact on the shape and direction of a person’s life. Having diversity of life experience and approach to criminal justice has to matter.

Beto’s coattails will mean a lot to the people in the largest county in Texas. When the Democrats swept all 59 positions in the judiciary, that is touching lives that he will never know. Getting people into those positions who might have compassion and understanding towards those standing before them..it’s a game changer.

I’m going to say it right now- I hope that you run again for 2020. I hope that you continue with the infrastructure that you already built. There were places that were close in 2018; maybe with a little more work and building of the infrastructure, they can get over the hump.

But, from the bottom of my heart, this Northern Black Democrat wants to thank you for your amazing run. Don’t let anyone talk smack that your run for the Senate wasn’t a fierce and passionate and righteous run that will now have ripples you couldn’t have even imagined.

And, the races that cannot be called yet, and never should have been called in Florida and Georgia.

I love that Stacey Abrams never conceded. And, she’s like – COUNT EVERY BALLOT.

You are damn straight – count every ballot.

Now, we see that chicanery in Florida too…COUNT EVERY BALLOT.

Things don’t make no damn sense.

Like, how, when the felon re-enfranchisement referendum passes the 60% threshold, but somehow, that doesn’t translate into votes for Gillum?

That referendum was PROGRESSIVE referendum. The drop off between voting for that and NOT voting for Gillum DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Then, they have the nerve..

The utter nerve…

To insult our intelligence…

And tell us that some exit poll said that Gillum only got 82% of the Black female vote.

GET THE ENTIRE PHUCK OUTTA HERE.

I have been a Black woman longer than 3 days.

And, there is NO WAY..

NO.WAY.IN.HELL.

That the qualified and handsome Black candidate…

With his equally qualified, talented and wonderful Black wife..

And those eat them up with a spoon Black children….

Would get only 82% of the Black female vote to a White candidate that called him a monkey and is a Dolt45 Acolyte.

NOT. EVER.

EVER.EVER.

EVER.EVER.EVER.

Trying to insult us as they try to cheat Andrew Gillum.

He’s at 97-98% with Black woman, if he’s at 1%.

Stop trying to LIE on us to justify your THEFT.

And, how can THIS be true, and you’re telling me that Gillum is doing worse than Nelson?

OMG. Looking at county-level undervote. Broward stands out for having 3.7% of its ballots left blank for #FLSEN but cast for #FLGOV. No other county comes close, and Palm/Dade had more votes for Senator. Either this is ballot design or machine error. #flapol #sayfiepic.twitter.com/OtyK0oO20g— Matthew Isbell (@mcimaps) November 8, 2018

Do I even have to go into the reasons why the Abrams/Kemp race shouldn’t be called until every frigging ballot is counted?
The level of cheating that that crook has done in this race!

Finally, a dispatch from Arizona:

Republicans filed a lawsuit Wednesday night to challenge the way some Arizona counties count mail-in ballots as election officials began to slowly tally more than 600,000 outstanding votes in the narrow U.S. Senate race — a task that could take days.

Republican Rep. Martha McSally and Democratic Rep. Kyrstin Sinema were separated by a small fraction of the 1.7 million tabulated votes.

About 75 percent of Arizona voters cast ballots by mail, but those ballots have to go through the laborious signature confirmation process, and only then can be opened and tabulated. If county recorders have issues verifying signatures they are allowed to ask voters to verify their identity.

Why are they afraid of the ballots being counted? Why? Why?

We know why.

After Scott requested investigation, law enforcement says no voter fraud allegations found
By MATT DIXON 11/09/2018 02:39 PM EST Updated 11/09/2018 04:44 PM EST

TALLAHASSEE — After the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Thursday night it would investigate two local election officials at the request of Gov. Rick Scott, the agency now says that because no voter fraud allegations were made, it is no longer pursuing an investigation.

“What changed is that this morning we spoke with the Department of State and they indicated they had no criminal allegations of fraud,” FDLE spokesperson Gretl Plessinger told POLITICO in an email. “So, after speaking to them, we offered our assistance in the event any criminal allegations are identified.”

Some people don’t handle rejection very well. Devlin is one of them. It appears to me that he has been thinking for a long time that the position belongs to him and no one else, which is similar to the way Roy Moore thought the open Alabama senate seat belonged to him. Devlin wasn’t doing his job in an unbiased manner, citizens noticed, got tired of it, and ended up voting him out of his judgeship. I’m glad they got rid of him. Many of us are tired of the school-to-prison pipeline some judges use to lock up kids who are usually members of minority groups. After he was voted out of office, Devlin behaved like a petulant two-year-old, and the following excerpt indicates he doesn’t accept rejection well:
“To Alex Bunin, the county’s chief public defender, the sudden leniency was simply baffling. “I’m not sure that I can wrap my arms around what he’s actually doing,” he said. “It’s a huge change and the only thing that has happened is that he was not elected so I don’t know what to attribute it to other than that.” To Jay Jenkins, a policy attorney with the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition, the post-election spate of releases reinforces the decision the local electorate made Tuesday. “The voters of Harris County clearly wanted a change in the juvenile courts and Judge Devlin today is showing us why the voters may have wanted change,” he said. “We’re hoping now the juvenile courts can be a much fairer and more equitable place.””

      “Concession” has no legal standing.

And I don’t think Mayor Gillum or Sen. Nelson would have given concession speeches if they knew about all the shenanigans going on at the time.

Trump needs to stop inferring that concession means it’s over. Concession does not override the vote count.

    • Ametia says:

That orange jumpsuit is waiting for you, Donnie Jr.

Again, concede has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with COUNTING ALL THE FUCKING VOTES, DUMBTARD.

Another great post today, Rikyrah. You’ve done an outstanding job of putting the results of this election into perspective.

And you’re right, Democrats are finally playing offense, and 2020 should be even better.

    • Liza says:

Yep, Kyrsten took the lead last night after Pima County posted and it appears to be slowly increasing.

Arizona might dodge a bullet. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Kyrsten Sinema was the target of the dirtiest campaign in Arizona. Doug Ducey ran a dirty campaign against David Garcia in the governor’s race, but it paled next to McSally.

I KNOW WHY YOU’RE SAD article at Gin and Tacos.

    From the piece:

No, you’re sad for the same reason you were so sad Wednesday morning after the 2016 Election. You’re sad because the results confirm that half of the electorate – a group that includes family, neighbors, friends, random fellow citizens – looked at the last two years and declared this is pretty much what they want. You’re sad because any Republican getting more than 1 vote in this election, let alone a majority of votes, forces us to recognize that a lot of this country is A-OK with undisguised white supremacy. You’re sad because once again you have been slapped across the face with the reality that a lot of Americans are, at their core, a lost cause. Willfully ignorant. Unpersuadable. Terrible people. Assholes, even.

    My response:

    Um…not me. I knew November 2016.

November 2018 lifted my spirits immensely.

Maybe those of you still upset still held out hope..

    Why, I don’t know.
But. As Kay said long ago…they showed their lack of character when they voted for Dolt45. That his approval ratings aren’t in the teens confirmed that lack of character.
Why you would need election results from November 2018 to confirm who they showed you they were in November 2016….

    well, that’s on you.

I was sad about Beto, Stacey and Andrew.

More about that punk azz judge in Texas who had the tantrum:

Judge Glenn Devlin is a hard-nosed Republican who rules in juvenile cases in Harris county, Texas. A Houston Chronicle investigation earlier this year found that Devlin and one other judge in the county, John Phillips, were responsible for more than one in five minors sent to juvenile prisons across all of Texas in 2017.

On Tuesday night, he was one of 59 Republican jurists who lost their seat in the country, in a Democratic rout that also saw 19 African American women win judgeships.

The day after his loss, Devlin released at least 10 juvenile defendants without examining their cases. According to local news reports, he asked each defendant whether they planned to murder anyone. If they said no, they were free to go. Many of the juveniles who were released were accused of violent crimes.

He reportedly told other lawyers in the courthouse, “this is what the voters want”.

    Narratives that died last night:

    — Trump has magical political powers, and his lies are “working”

    — Democrats have no answer to the “nationalist backlash”

    — Democrats can’t assemble a multi-racial majority against Trumpism

Don’t let anyone take your joy.

Some things since Tuesday night that reshape midterm thinking:
-4 more House R->D seats called
-Florida Gov & Senate move to recounts
    -Tester wins
    -GA Gov closer to run-off
-AZ Senate still in air, keeping Dem hopes of another pick-up alive
-Dems closing in on 400 state leg flips

    — Edward-Isaac Dovere (@IsaacDovere) November 9, 2018

  16. rikyrah says:

Two days out makes it increasingly clear: Dems will win btw 35 and 40 House Seats. They flipped at least 7 governorships. They will likely win over 400 state legislative seats. IN, MO and ND were big losses. But this was a big wave election. There’s no question.

    • Liza says:

Well, we knew that Michelle Obama wasn’t writing a fluff piece.

I’m so glad she’s calling out Trump on his despicable Birther campaign against PBO. And yes it was extremely dangerous for the Obamas. Everyone knew that and it was always on our minds, what could happen when the flames of hatred are constantly being stoked. So much so that one might surmise that was the goal of the Birther campaign. We didn’t talk about it but we were thought about it all the time.

Truth is that great river that runs under everything and eventually bursts through.

  18. rikyrah says:

    From Forever FLOTUS about Dolt45

“The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed. But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks,” she writes. “What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls? Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.”
