This Christmas is a song by American soul musician Donny Hathaway released in 1970 by Atco Records. The song gained renewed interest when it was included in 1991 on Atco Records’ revised edition of their 1968 Soul Christmas compilation album[1] and has since become a modern Christmas standard, with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers reporting that it was the 30th most-performed holiday song of all time.[2]

Phil Upchurch said the song was “absolutely the premiere holiday song written by an African American“. It was written by Hathaway and Nadine McKinnor.[3]

    Where Government Is a Dirty Word, but Its Checks Pay the Bills

    The residents of Harlan County, Ky., depend heavily on federal assistance. That hasn’t deterred, and may explain, their swing to Republican voting.

    Harlan County is the nation’s fifth most dependent on federal programs, according to the government’s Bureau of Economic Analysis. In 2016 some 54 percent of the income of the county’s roughly 26,000 residents came from programs like Social Security and Medicaid, food stamps — formally known as SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — and the earned-income tax credit. That is up from 28 percent in 1990.

    Surrounding counties are similarly dependent. Part of a coal-mining region in long, inexorable decline, this pocket of the nation exemplifies a political paradox: Why are so many American voters hostile to the government hand that feeds them?

    “The SNAP card works every month; the kids eat two meals a day, but people don’t think about where the food comes from and go vote for Republicans,” said Larry King, a farmer who is chairman of the Democratic Party in nearby McCreary County, whose residents get 55 percent of their income from federal transfers.

    Take Daniel Lewis, who crashed his car into a coal truck 15 years ago, breaking his neck and suffering a blood clot in his brain when he was only 21. He is grateful for the $1,600 a month his family gets from disability insurance; for his Medicaid benefits; for the food stamps he shares with his wife and two children.

    “Every need I have has been met,” Mr. Lewis told me. He disagrees with the governor’s proposal to demand that Medicaid recipients get a job. And yet, in 2016, he voted for Mr. Trump. “It was the lesser of two evils,” he said.

    Mr. Jones, a Republican who not long ago was a Democrat, speaks from a deep well of grievance over the fact that generations of Harlan residents have had to turn to the government for sustenance. That sentiment mixes in with a vague but powerful resentment across the county toward a political system that people here blame for allowing, encouraging even, the decline of coal, its economic backbone.

    Many people blame Mr. Obama’s Clean Power Plan for killing coal and credit their vote for Mr. Trump to his promise that he would revitalize the industry. Some are skeptical of a government that saved Detroit’s automakers but not Appalachia’s lifeline. And this feeling is going to be hard to shake.

    Less that two months before the 2010 midterms election swept Republicans into a majority in the House, three GOP upstarts published a book titled, Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders. You might remember that the three white guys who assumed they were about take over leadership of their party were Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, and Kevin McCarthy.

    Each of those men assigned themselves a role as the vanguards of a new Republican Party. Cantor was the leader, Ryan the policy wonk, and McCarthy the strategist. Their so-called “blueprint” was nothing more than the warmed-over policies that generations of Republicans have embraced: tax cuts and deficit reduction via gutting of the social safety net. As Politico noted at the time of the book’s release, it was “long on platitudes and personality but short on policy details.”

    Frankly, it was a bit audacious—even for Republicans—to anoint themselves the “new generation of conservative leaders.” But in the midst of the red wave of 2010, those were heady days for the GOP. Even so, the audacity of the young guns was relatively short-lived.

    The administration is also shoring up its efforts to either infect the Mueller investigation or stop it in its tracks. If not for all of the other bombshells dropping this week, the story about acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker’s move would have gotten a lot more attention.

    Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker chose not to recuse himself from the Russia investigation even though a top Justice Department ethics official advised him to step aside out of an “abundance of caution,” a senior official said Thursday.

    Whitaker’s past criticism of the Russia investigation has raised questions about whether he can oversee it fairly. The ethics official said this week that a recusal was “a close call” but suggested that Whitaker remove himself, even though he was not required to do so.

    Whitaker decided not to take the advice.

    Donald Trump is reportedly already turning on Mick Mulvaney—who hasn’t even started his new job as acting White House chief of staff yet—due to a two-year-old video uncovered by The Daily Beast, which shows Mulvaney calling the president “a terrible human being.” Mulvaney is due to start his new job at the end of the year. Trump’s announcement of Mulvaney’s appointment followed a troubled hiring process that saw several of his preferred picks refuse the role.     As Mueller time approaches, it is likely that President Trump’s defense will consist of two phrases: “But that is not illegal” and “But that is not impeachable.”

    It is a strategy that prevails by the lowering of standards. Because Trump did not plot election fraud directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin by Skype, and because Trump’s various crimes and misdemeanors do not constitute high crimes and misdemeanors, we should consider the president vindicated. Unable to make the case for his own virtues, Trump must aver that his vices are commonplace and inconsequential.
