Saturday Open Thread

Good Morning. I hope that you are enjoying this weekend with family and friends.

Jordan Peele…the Academy Award Winning creator of Get Out has a new film coming out…

It’s called US….

It stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke

It’s a horror flick…here’s the trailer….

From Shadow and Act:

Shrouded In Darkness: The Trailer For Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ Redefines Horror Mythology

“It is a horror film. I dedicated a lot of myself to creating new horror mythology and new monsters. I think that monsters and stories about monsters are one of our best ways of getting at deeper truths and facing our fears in society. It was very important to me to have a Black family at the center of a horror film.”

The Us trailer opens warmly enough. A Black family — a mother, father, son and daughter travel along a country road with Luniz’s 1995 hip-hop classic “I Got 5 On It” blasting from the radio. The father, Gabe (Winston Duke) sits in the driver’s seat rapping along to the music as the mother, Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), turns toward the backseat eagerly trying to get her young children (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) to engage with the classic song. The kids, of course, are less than impressed.

The Wilson family soon arrives at Adelaide’s old childhood beachside home in Northern California where they are spending the summer. They take in the day lounging at the beach with some old friends —the Tyler family (Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker). Their blissful day quickly turns sinister when Adelaide —who is haunted by a past trauma — notices that her son Jason (Alex) is no longer on the beach. Adelaide spirals into a panic running along the sand shouting for her son before finally finding Jason who —seems OK, though perhaps a little thrown off by an eerie figure he sees on the beach. Done with the beach for the day, the Wilsons head back to their summer home for the evening. As night swoops in, the family’s lives descends into complete chaos. First, a figure clutching a large pair of shears appears in their driveway along with four silent figures clutching hands. From Peele and the cast’s exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly we’ve learned that these monsters are called “the Tethered.”

Never one to back down from a fight Gabe (Duke), dressed in a Howard University sweatshirt and clutching a baseball bat, runs out of the house to confront the figures who are terrifying his family. He screams, “If you want to get crazy, we can get crazy!” As he approaches them, he realizes there is something oddly familiar about these monsters. What Gabe sees stuns him —the Tethered are horrific versions of himself and his family. Though the figures are shrouded in darkness, Adelaide soon realizes, “They think like us, look like us, and know who we are.” Terrorized and panicked, the Wilsons and their friends begin the bloody and horrific fight for their lives. All the while chopped and screwed versions of “I Got 5 On It” ring out eerily in the background.

So what is Us really about? At its core, Peele explained, “It is about something that I feel has become an undeniable truth. That is the simple fact that we are our own worst enemies.” Instead of examining the monsters that invade out nightmares, Peele is redefining the horror mythology by turning it on its head and forcing us to look inward — at the fears that have haunted us throughout our lifetimes.

Us debuts in theaters on March 15, 2019.

I don’t do horror, but for those of you that do….enjoy…

  2. What? Witnesses stated the shooter was a white male in red hoodie, with a white beard, then police sketch showed a white male with black hoodie, no beard. Now suspect is a Black male? Something smells.

Not that Pelosi couldn’t do a helluva lot better with the answer to the Black Lives Matter question…
        I gotta say this.
We had the phucking KKKeebler Elf for 2 years raining hell …where was this person.
I remember alllll those Twitter Blacktivists who were everywhere during 44’s Administration…all day, everyday.

We get a full blown White Supremacist, and, outside of DeRay and Shaun King…the rest of them have become GHOSTS.

So, color me curious about this person popping up at Nancy Pelosi’s Town Hall.

      • I can agree with you on the Twitter Blacktavist going silent. But Nancy Pelosi should have did a a hellava lot better than the “All Lives Matter” fuckery. This has nothing to do with her Speaker position. She deserves it. But she wouldn’t be Speaker without Black women voters busting our ass getting out the vote to put her in that position. Black Lives Matter is not about past grievances. Racism is happening right now. Many of those Black women voters have had their sons, husbands, uncles gunned down by police and still worked to elect Democrats to control the House. It tells me she has learned nothing about Black Lives Matter. I still remember from the emails where she said “Don’t make any promises to Black Lives Matter”. That’s a stab in the heart. My Black boys lives matter!

    The situation is untenable

I was going to entitle this piece “Impeach the Motherfucker Already”, but classy guy that I am I didn’t. However, we are now past the event horizon.

Today, Traitor Donald Trump held a meeting with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer over the government shutdown. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the actual head of the Senate, was nowhere to be seen. Pelosi and Schumer came out of the meeting and told the assembled press that Trump averred that he’d shutter the government “for years” if it was necessary to get his wall.

That, itself, was horrific enough. But then the traitor came out and had his own Rose Garden press conference. There was a lot of hurr-durr and lies. But this one thing stuck out to me: Trump said that he’d consider a “military version of eminent domain” to seize land along the border and build his wall.

Let’s not mince words. What he’s considering is nothing short of martial law. The military cannot just seize property, short of there being a state of war.

    ……………………

We can no longer go on like this. This country is being dismantled by a lunatic, aided and abetted by nihilists who see the progress this nation has made over the past 40 years as nothing short of their cultural and physical genocide. Trump is giving vent to their existential fears, and acting on them. He, like them, sees his life about to end, and can’t conceive that people would go on without him, holding his memory in nothing but scorn and derision. Thus why he won’t and can’t compromise with the Democrats. The wall is his last link to sanity. After that, it’s nothing but senescence and doltishness.

No Accident: How Bernie Sanders Needed a Culture of Misogyny to Compete in 2016
    Times Up for Bernie Sanders.

After successfully playing the lovable old grandpa for nearly four years, karma caught up to the Vermont senator in a big way on Wednesday when The New York Times published a scathing article, chronicling months of neglect of both sexual harassment and equal pay during the 2016 presidential primary. To make matters worse, Sanders gave an interview to CNN Wednesday night where he stated he was a “little bit busy running around the country” to take seriously all the claims of his female staffers at the times of the alleged incidents. Sanders’ closest allies were forced to twist themselves into human pretzels to defend their messiah with Cenk Uygur bemoaning that the media never writes positive stories about Bernie, Walker Bragman insisting this is exactly the same as when Hillary Clinton fired a staffer for sexual harassment, and David Sirota going on radio silence for 18 hours and counting. From both Sanders and his team, there has been no denial of what happened but rather a half-hearted promise that systems will be put in place to do better next time.

    ……………………………..

For whatever reason, the Sanders campaign didn’t feel the need to address these allegations during Carmona’s time on staff. But even more troubling than an individual like Carmona is the fact that other prominent female Sanders staffers were also subject to harassment. Take, for instance, the case of Lucy Flores. Flores was a Sanders darling, who worked on his staff before choosing to run for Congress in 2016. In fact, Flores was such a strong surrogate that Sanders made her one of only three candidates that he would fundraise for throughout the entire 2016 election cycle after he was shamed into doing so. Flores recently confessed to NPR that she was aware of allegations of misogyny during the campaign and that there was “essentially a cover up” in dealing with it. She left Our Revolution in May of 2018 after she felt they weren’t addressing the needs of the Latino community. Combine that that the experience of Sarah Slamen, Sanders’ Louisiana state director. Slamen rose to national prominence in 2013 when she was removed from the Texas state senate for forcefully speaking out against a proposed 20-week abortion ban so she had experience dealing with controlling men in politics. However, even Slamen took issue with the Sanders campaign’s treatment of women and she would go on to resign from Our Revolution when her concerns over sexist behavior would go unanswered. Slamen said of Sanders, “I don’t think he has the vehicle or the platform that emerged from this campaign” to deal with the misogyny and sexism that her and others were forced to deal with.

The question now becomes who else was mistreated? Because if strong, powerful, independent women like Mendieta, Flores, and Slamen were on the receiving end of this type of behavior, what was it like for the more timid women who were scared to tell anyone what they saw, heard, or experienced? If people like Arturo Carmona could openly exist with a Harvey Weinstein-type reputation, how many other men on Sanders’ staff felt empowered to verbally and perhaps even physically abuse women? We’ve seen how complaints went unaddressed and we’ve seen how Bernie Sanders himself was allegedly unaware of what was going on. Why would a presidential campaign in the year 2016 think that any of this was okay?

The answer to those questions resolves around the candidate himself. Bernie Sanders is no friend to women, he never has been. From his now-infamous rape essay to his voting against the Amber Alert system to his attempt to dump nuclear waste on the majority-Latino town of Sierra Blanca, Texas, Sanders had a distinguished track record of voting for policies that would not protect women or children. Combine all this with his abysmal track record on guns including voting against the Brady Bill five times, voting to allow guns on Amtrak trains, and voting in favor of the “Charleston loophole” and you’ll see a career Washington insider with an obvious record of voting against common sense legislation that would improve the lives of women. His horrific record of voting for pro-women legislation and his inability to point to one specific piece of legislation that he composed that would actually become law, initially left Sanders on the outside looking in of the 2016 presidential race. Combined with the fact that Sanders was going up against Hillary Clinton, who had a chance to become the first female president, it became obvious that Bernie Sanders had a woman problem and that he would have to make major adjustments if he were to be considered a serious contender for president of the United States.

Republican hypocrisy at its finest: saying that Trump admitting to sexual assault on tape is just “locker room talk,” but scandalizing themselves into faux-outrage when my sis says a curse word in a bar.

GOP lost entitlement to policing women’s behavior a long time ago.

Pelosi Stumbled, bigly with the question posed by the young black girl. This “all lives matter’ bull sit?I.CAN.NOT. Why go there? It’s not what was asked.

Here’s how it should have gone down:

    “YES”. FUUL STOP.

The young lady needed a heartfelt response. “Yes” she would hear “You matter”

One word answer leaves the door open for the young lady to ask a clarifying question, or for Joy to pose another question.

These town halls are not designed for the kind of nuanced discussions before a camera.

This is politics, folks. Watch what Speaker Pelosi does, gets done.

We are at war with 45 & the rest of the thugs in his circle. Criticize, mobilize, and support get the work done, to get this mother sucker out of our White House.

    • Liza says:

      Truth.

The disconnect between the career politicians and the rest of us cannot be ignored. It will, from time to time, show itself.

But we must stay focused on the crisis at hand until enough tourniquets are in place to stop the bleeding.

      • Ametia says:

WE can never afford to allow ourselves to be bamboozled, hoodwinked into taking our awareness off who is actually doing the work to move us forward and those who are using all their power & breath to take us back, hell take us the duck OUT.

  10. Nancy Pelosi response to the Black Lives Matter question was extremely disappointing. Extremely. Black women voters have saved the Democratic Party’s ass. But Nancy has learned absolutely nothing about Black Lives. This is not about past grievances. It’s about what’s happening right now and she doesn’t GET IT! WTF is wrong?

  11. Good morning, ladies. Check your email. I still have no voice. It’s a whisper.

    • Ametia says:

We got the numbers, now let’s use the power to get the work done to scrutinize legislation that excludes blacks & that which is detrimental to us, like voter suppression & housing for start.

We got coons in positions of power–LOOKING@YOU.BEN.CARSON, who are absolutely detrimental to our well being.

Folks are coming at us from all sides, from within & without.

BLACK LIVES MATTER-We CLAIM IT. We OWN IT

  12. rikyrah says:

I am going to say this about the government shutdown…
They think that Nancy Smash is going to blink… because, Democrats CARE.
They don’t get it. The 44 years moved us inches away from caring.
The last 2 years and all the shyt that they have done has completely hardened us.

    There is a reason why I co-sign
