Tuesday Open Thread | Black Classical Music Composers

Happy Tuesday, Everyone. today’s featured composer is Florence Beatrice Price.

Florence Beatrice Price

Florence Beatrice Price was an award-winning pianist and composer who became the first African-American woman to have her work performed by a major symphony.

Synopsis
Born in Arkansas in 1887, Florence Beatrice Price gave her first piano performance at the age of 4. She went on to attend the New England Conservatory of Music and would eventually settle in Chicago. There, her award-winning “Symphony in E Minor” was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, paving the way for more of her work to be commissioned by orchestras both domestically and abroad. Over the years, luminaries like Marian Anderson and Leontyne Price sang her compositions as well. A major contributor to classical music, Price died on June 3, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois.

Early Life and Training

Florence Beatrice Smith was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on April 9, 1887, to Florence Gulliver and James H. Smith. With her mother being a music teacher, the younger Florence learned how to play piano as a child, as did her two siblings, and Florence gave her first recital at 4 years old. She attended the same elementary school as William Grant Still, another future classical music great, and both studied under educator Charlotte Andrews Stephens. By the time Smith graduated from Capitol High School as valedictorian at age 14, she had become a published composer.

It was so cold this evening, when I was waiting for the Lyft to pick me up tonight at the train station, it hurt. My face was in pain, and the temperature was way higher today.. I am scared for people who have to go out tomorrow.
I had already decided not to go to work tomorrow…. luckily, before we went home, we got word that we would have the day off.

I remember living through all kinds of bad snowstorms. I am used to cold weather during winter. What they are talking about –what’s going to happen tomorrow… I can’t remember it ever being this bad.

We are going to be colder than SIBERIA tomorrow. We are going to be colder than the North Pole!!

      This ain’t normal 😪😪😫😫

Eliihaas, how are you? Good to see your fonts.

Thank you! That YAHOO CEO, got his ASS PADDLED, by THIS Very SMART WOMAN.

I’d love to read your comments on Kamala’s run for POTUS. Don’t hold back. It’s all good.

      We need all perspectives here.

      • eliihass says:

Hey my Sis.. Wasn’t it something to behold watching that Oxfam ceo lady look that horrid Yahoo cfo and tell him some plain hard truths..

‘Jobs’ my foot she told him – where’s the humanity… the dignity…?

They mightn’t invite these truth-telling ‘plebs’ back to Davos ever again for making the top guys uncomfortable (the nerve!), but at least they planted some important truth seeds there this year..

And as someone in the comments wrote: “..Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich…”

Re: our current Party presidential slate.. I’m just going to let it play out …I’ve shared a bit here over the years …and tried to hint at stuff and even set this entire thing playing out right now up for my fam here starting a couple of years back.. I’m going to have to take a pass on sharing any more of my thoughts since they aren’t positive.. as you remember …And not much has changed..

This dyed in the wool California girl.. who’s paid attention to our local and State politics for in forever.. and know all the politicos and miscellaneous players very well..

In much the same way you know the politicos and players in your neck of the woods well – and you know when they’re bs-ing and seriously hood-winking outside folks who don’t know better.. Besides other troubling stuff, it is important to stress that ‘winning’ state-wide elections in California against weak repug opponents – after the field has been preemptively cleared of other Dems each time …and yet still seriously underperforming compared to other state-wide Dem candidates each year, is only another red flag!)

But safe to say that if this thing plays out as is the will of the donor class (same kingmakers, different day, different approach) and the ‘zealous’ paid ‘influencers’ hired to push hard to make it happen, hate to say it, but we’re going to wake up & find that we lost again..

      • Ametia says:

Thanks for what you’ve shared, eliihaas. It helps from someone who lives in California such as yourself.

I’m s going to be facinatng to watch how this all unfolds.

    History break…

I just finished watching the 4-part PBS documentary, Native America. It is excellent, very informative for those of us who know so little of this history (probably more than 90 percent of people living in the US). Narrated by my favorite half Mohawk guitar hero, Robbie Robertson.

For someone who is so concerned about Donald Trump he seems to spend all his time attacking Democrats.

Maybe that’s the trick- he isn’t a Democrat running as an independent, he’s a Republican running as an independent. They’re too scared to primary Trump so they tapped this fool.

A Smithsonian cleaning manager lost her husband last year to a heart attack.
She’s struggling to raise her two boys.
    She makes ~$400 weekly

This ‘barber’ needs to be reminded that his mama, grandmother, aunts, and some of his cousins are female, and that without the first three, he probably wouldn’t be where he is in life today. My parents were married for 53 years when my mom passed. I had a good daddy, and he lauded my mom for her contributions to the marriage and family. My dad worked all of the time, and that meant my mom had to raise six kids and do all of the things that kept a household up and running well.

Oh Liza, come get your man Flake!!!!

    • Liza says:

Oh, no! I knew he’d be back but I kind of thought it would be some gig with a right wing “think tank”. But this makes sense, I guess. All he has to do is run his mouth which is about all he has ever done. All smoke, no fire.

      • Ametia says:

HA HA HA HA He’s setting the stage for Susan Collins, another talker, and no action.

She’ll likely loose her seat in the next election. Who knows, maybe CBS or NBC will sign her up ALSO TOO.

    • Ametia says:

      Thank you, for this Rik.

We need more POC in these positions of justice.

    • Ametia says:

Playing victim, because that’s how these white boys & men roll.

Blame everybody, and don’t take responsibility=leaning on that whiteness.

See Howard Schulz comment above, blaming AOC, for his running for POTUS?

      GTFOH

    • Liza says:

Aww, so Baby Nick’s mommy is going to sue the whole Internet.

No one has time for these maggots. They should be thankful that the news cycle has reset and moved on. Their best course of action would be to lay low and mind their own business, hope people forget.

    • Liza says:

I guess it’s also possible that these racist maggots think there’s gold in them there hills and this is their chance to cash in.
