Friday Open Thread: Two Georgia Democrats plan to skip Trump’s State of the Union

Two Georgia Democrats are planning to skip President Trump’s State of the Union address next week.

The offices of Reps. John Lewis and Hank Johnson confirmed to The Hill Thursday that they would not be in attendance on Feb. 5.

“I have a problem with defiling the Speaker’s chair in the House of Representatives,” Johnson told AJC. “I don’t want to see it lowered, as is what happens when Donald Trump comes to our floor and starts talking about groups of people, particularly Latinos, and disparaging them as a people.”

“I’d rather be somewhere else,” he added.

Civil rights hero Lewis is continuing his standing boycott of Trump’s speeches.

Lewis was also one of the many Democrats to not attend the annual speech last year.

Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams is set to deliver her party’s response to Trump’s speech.

Abrams is seen as a rising star in the party after her contentious loss to Brian Kemp (R) in Georgia’s gubernatorial election last year.

Abrams is considered a potential candidate next year for the seat currently held by Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) following her unsuccessful run.

We’ve always had more than our share of white supremacists in our ‘liberal, Dem, progressive’ fold.. And it’s not limited to southerners either.. they are very much present on our coasts and everywhere in between.. to this day..

Nary a push-back in defense or protection of her ..and nary a whimper of angry rebuke about any of it.. as I watched for years as the historic black First Lady was blatantly direspected, disregarded, mistreated, and dehumanized – even right inside, and by her own husband’s White House! Heck, but for her own resourcefulness and ingenuity, this historic first black First Lady was all but almost erased from her own husband’s 2-term, 8 year historic presidency – for which she now walks around with a permanent target on her back – by those who now actively profit from their access to the historic presidency that she and her kids paid the price for ..

I remember how the poobahs and Democratic Party hierarchy disrespected and disregarded her – until they realized she was one of the Dems most valuable assets and the ultimate and most compelling campaigner.. And even then, they only momentarily remembered to acknowledge her – only when election time rolled around and they tried to butter her up to exploit her and her considerable gifts and talents..

I remember well, black folk like Toure and their black-sourced hit-pieces on her …including those about how she – a double Ivy League educated black woman who built a successful life from scratch with her husband who’d now become President of the United States, didn’t ‘belong’ on Martha’s Vineyard because she was not of the ‘Jack and Jill’ crowd, but from the ‘ghettoes’ of Chicago – and from ‘the same neighborhood as Jennifer Hudson’.. I remember too the women who screamed ‘sisterhood forever’, but very consciously excluded her – even as they eagerly defended, talked-up, kissed up to and sniffed around her hubby.. Some of whom to this day, post gushing tributes on their social media pages, to her husband on his birthday – and on other days, for no reason at all, … even as they still pretend she does not exist …until of course they need her and then whip out and try to exploit some random photo with her …to pretend they’re somehow ‘pals’.. and only to advance some dubious, self-serving agenda of theirs .. or to gain access to her hubby.. since there are no longer dubious WH staff-generated invites to get around her, to his presence..

Heck, I remember how the self-proclaimed black ‘leaders’ and ‘elite’ tried to marginalize and diminish her – even as they kiss-up to her white peers … who can forget the opening of the Smithsonian’s NMAAHC where she – the sitting First Lady …historic first black First Lady and direct descendant of slaves, was not even acknowledged but was treated as some random lady who just happened to show up with the president to the event..

Easy to forget or pretend that it never was (even as there are now even black folks! and kids who believe her a man/‘tranny’ – thanks to the fact that nobody nipped it in the bud when the right-wing first pushed it as an intended racial insult.. And as some ‘progressive’ and even black folks jumped now on the it’s so offensive to call Ann Coulter a tranny, bandwagon..)

Easy to forget or pretend not to remember …and only because she survived – and all by herself! …and is thriving – thanks only to God, and her ability to turn the rotten lemons handed her into high-demand gourmet lemonade..

I know we’re supposed to be ‘shocked’ and ‘offended’ that Ralph Northam wore blackface and/or kkk hoods, but I just can’t get myself to care, frankly.. I wouldn’t flinch if Nancy or Chuck or AOC or Bernie or Ted Lieu or Biden or just about any Dem was found doing some racist stuff .. This is America after all, fam..

And especially knowing what I do about so many of the very same faux-outraged folks …’progressives’, ’liberals’, Dems of every stripe.. and even some of those faux-non-racist repugs… all acting ‘shocked’, shaking their heads in dismay and finger-wagging at the ‘travesty’ of it all.. 🙄🙄

Realizing what was and is, I long ago decided to start viewing and assessing just about everything from the prism of the treatment of America’s historic first black First Lady.. She remains for me, that unquestionably distinct metaphor for black womanhood on the world stage.. I judge everyone and everything by how they treat(ed) her …when she first showed up in America’s consciousness… during their 8 years in the White House.. and just about every time … And as infuriating as what I’ve often observed has been, it’s also been quite fascinating the double standards and dynamics of selective protection, outrage etc. etc. to say the very least..

The Governor of Virginia in Blackface?😒

    There is nothing to explain.
I just had this conversation with Peanut. I had to explain to her about blackface. She is 10. Don’t tell me that a COLLEGE STUDENT didn’t know how offensive it is…😠😠

Listening to the @cnn panel discuss Brown’s potential pres candidacy and remembering how they discussed Harris’ pres candidacy.

There’s a clear media advantage to being a white male.

“he appeals to steel workers” is the new way to say “racist white guys might vote for him”.

With a grifting, treasonous buffoon sitting tight in America’s White House, and being indulged too, even with his crimes starring everyone in the face ..everyone and their pug is running or contemplating a run, with the bar now so lowered it’s practically in the basement…

Sherrod Brown is ho-hum, ‘white-bread’ .. a mixed-bag of sorts who has no substantial national base to raucously hype him up or cheerlead him into any sort of prominence in this race.. And he isn’t out of ‘central casting’ or able to cook up some slick angle to make him stand out.. Probably angling for a veep spot too, if presidential run doesn’t pan out – as he’s often touted as somehow magical whisperer to that heavily sub-texted ‘working class’ demographic..

Media loves a horse race – and pitting Democrats against each other is a favorite pasttime – but ultimately, only to weaken Dems and push through whatever repug opponent shows up.. no matter how unimpressive.. no matter how buffoonish, no matter how treasonous..

I’m going to repeat this again in 2019

‘Working Class’ is an exclusionary term that negatively impacts marginlized groups because we are not depicted as such in the MSM.

Stop using “Working Class” as a synonym of “White Voters”.

    Democrats have a choice.

People can advocate for a ricket where a white person needs to appeal to white voters while they echo racial sentiements while not trying to alienate white voters or you can walk away from that and advocate for a representative, diverse ticket.

Are we gonna discuss the elephant in the room with regards to Booker?

    He’s not married.

That’s part of the problem with his inauthenticity.

Let’s keep it real – no way a Black guy, with his background, should be unmarried at this point.

And, sexual preference is not an excuse anymore.

    • Ametia says:

Nope, and neither is Stacey Abrams.

The truth is the appeal for a married candidates resonates more for voters, but I don’t think it should be a deterrent.

    • Ametia says:

Exactly, Liza. We have a myriad 21st century lifestyle choices now. time to start claiming them in our decision making.

    • eliihass says:

Sorry fam, but he’s no more inauthentic than Harris.. They’re both as painfully contrived, exploitatively opportunistic and as unconvincing as they come..

Can’t possibly slate Booker while propping up Harris..

I used to read a blog by a Black Conservative called Booker Rising (as in Booker T). The night of the Iowa Caucus 2008, the blog owner wrote something that I never forgot..it always seemed to always hit on the mark with Booker…

” Somewhere in a Newark housing project, Cory Booker is scribbling down notes furiously “

  12. rikyrah says:

I routinely write that the curve for Unqualified White Men is REAL.

    The opposite of that is…

There IS no curve for a Black candidate.
    Just isn’t.

    Barack Obama understood that.
    Kamala Harris understands that.
I don’t believe that Booker does.
