Okay. In the spirit of doing something different on Saturday, here is one of my latest “escape from reality” movie picks, The Deer Hunter.

I saw this film in the theater when it was released in 1978. I was so horrified by the Russian roulette scenes that I never wanted to see it again. But I will say that The Deer Hunter, released just three years after the fall of Saigon, is the reason I read so many non-fiction books about the Vietnam War in subsequent years.

I picked up the DVD at the library a few months ago and watched a few scenes, I still couldn’t watch the film. But then I decided just to watch it, start to finish, and I have to agree that this film is a masterpiece. Writer/director Michael Cimino got his timing just right, Americans were ready for this story in 1978. Cimino doesn’t chronicle the war, his timeline is actually confusing. He never wanders into politics or morality. The Deer Hunter is about was asked of these men who fought, who they were, what they endured, what they sacrificed. If you can get past the Russian roulette, which was fictitious, you can really feel these guys.

This is one of my favorite scenes. Alpha male Mike and sweet, sensitive Nick the weekend before they left for Vietnam.
