    ‘The Original Black Elite’: A portrait of the first generation to win freedom

    Chicago Tribune

    The progression of civil rights for black Americans is not like climbing a staircase, where the next step orderly follows the one before, the ascent certain if slow.

    For African-Americans, even the most educated and affluent, the climb has been repeatedly interrupted by angry white people setting fire to the stairwell.

    In “The Original Black Elite: Daniel Murray and the Story of a Forgotten Era,” author Elizabeth Dowling Taylor chronicles the colored aristocracy’s brief taste of nearly equal citizenship in the nation’s capital in the late 1880s.

    In doing so, she dismantles the narrative of black Americans post-Civil War as a pitiful mass of slavery’s survivors, destitute and undereducated. Particularly in East Coast cities, the black elites formed social and literary clubs, threw elegant galas, had summer homes and sent their children to the most selective colleges.

    Taylor’s protagonist is Daniel Murray, born free in Baltimore in 1851. He became an entrepreneur, self-taught historian and staunch civil rights activist. He developed real estate, ran for office, petitioned presidents and was a patron of the arts.

    “They saw themselves as cultural brokers,” writes Taylor, “their success and gentility would inspire the black masses while proving to whites that, given education and opportunity, all African Americans would follow in their footsteps.”

    Their mission was futile and as naive as respectability politics always is. Black excellence, then and now, proved no match for racism.

    In the late 19th century, African-American congressmen from the South began to be replaced by white men. And when President William McKinley sought to appease Southern legislators under the guise of national unity, he welcomed in the virulent racism they brought with them and allowed it to spread throughout the country. Integrated restaurants and hotels were segregated. Federal appointments for black men to stable jobs became scarce. And in 1883, the Supreme Court gutted the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which had guaranteed access to public accommodations regardless of race.

    Pragmatists and Moderates Must Take a Stand for Democracy and for the Democratic Party

    But at the end of the day, in all truthfulness, the ideologues get away with hogging the limelight and the microphone because we, the pragmatists who outnumber them 5:1, let them. We, the pragmatists who understand that government is to be used to do good things and not just talk about breaking things, see ideologues, who are a small minority within our movement, harass and hound the rest of us and we decide it’s not worth standing up and dogwalking them. We see them peppering the rest of us about what they want and decide we’d rather not get into a fight about how to accomplish things. We allow them to pretend that “feeling” resolutions that take no legal steps, spend no money, mandates no action, is somehow an audacious and ambitious plan to fight a planetary existential threat.

    We don’t assert our claim on a movement that we comprise the vast majority of, and we let the ideologues represent a movement they clearly do not. We act like we’re the minority, and we surrender to the ideologues whatever they want, including the fantastical claim that they, the 15%, and not us, the 80%, are the righteous gatekeepers of what even counts as progressive.

    Stop. We need to stop. Pragmatists and moderates need to stop ceding ground to extremist ideologues. We need to take back our movement, our party, our country. We need to speak up so that conversations in person and on social media do not feel like a void being filled by high pitch decibels from ideologues from either side. We need to warn that Donald Trump is the logical conclusion to ideological extremism. We need to act. We need to recruit candidates, volunteer, donate. We need to demand that the media give voice to the 4 in 5 pragmatists in our movement rather than allowing the 1 in 7 ideolgues to suck out all the oxygen. We need to support the media that does so, and politicians who care more about results than about screaming matches.

    Women’s Health Care and Medicare for All: No Deal Without Abortion Coverage

    Abortion is one of the ten most common medical procedures performed in the United States. There are more abortions each year than blood transfusions or knee replacements. It’s high time we started treating abortion without the usual taboos and with the respect, dignity and deference it and the women who choose it deserve.

    Today, March 10, is National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day. In preparation, I have been conducting some interviews that I plan on publicizing throughout the month.

    As you can hear me say at the end of this clip, I agree. We cannot accept any plan that compromises away medical care for women, specifically abortion care. Today in many states abortion is paid for privately and through charitable funding as those states ban the use of Medicaid money to pay for abortions, and some states, like Texas, even bans insurance companies in the state from covering abortion. The government has no business practicing medicine.

    The newest Medicare for All plan, unveiled by Rep. Pramila Jayapal, does cover abortion. However, Congress has, for decades, attached riders to all federal funding bills barring federal dollars from paying for abortions. This is known as the Hyde amendment.

    If and when Democrats are in a position of power to make changes to health care again, abortion funding is likely to become a contentious issue. Already, a few grassroots folks who back Bernie Sanders’ presidential ambitions have told me that they want single payer health care, and abortion funding is not that important, that it would be worth trading away coverage for abortion in order to eliminate insurance companies.
