Tuesday Open Thread | Trump Encourages Violence

Donald Trump this week issued a thinly veiled threat of violence against his opponents, saying that members of the police, military and biker gangs could “play it tough” if they “reach a certain point.”

It was a disturbing remark, but even more disturbing is the fact that it’s part of a long history of Trump encouraging his supporters to engage in violence. Largely unchecked by his party’s leadership, Trump’s rhetoric has become normalized despite its real-world ramifications.

“I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of Bikers for Trump,” Trump told Breitbart in the interview, which he later tweeted. “I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad.”

“I think it sounds very much to me like he’s encouraging them to engage in something that’s probably illegal such as assaulting people, you know behave in a dangerous way,” Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) told MSNBC. “That sounds like a threat to me. I think it’s appalling.”

JUST CALL FOR A PHUCKING NEW VOTE ON IT!

10 days to Brexit: what happens if the UK does not leave on 29 March?
An extension now looks likely – how long will Brexit be delayed for and can it be stopped altogether?

It is 10 days before the UK is scheduled to leave the European Union. Currently we do not know when, or if, Brexit will take place; if it does happen then under what, if any deal; or even, after John Bercow’s ruling, whether the government can put its plan again to MPs if it wants to do so. So what could happen next?

What is the government’s next move?
At the moment we don’t know: following the Speaker’s surprise intervention on Monday, the only ministerial response has been to say that the government needs to “look at the details of the ruling”, and see what can be done.

What’s due to happen this week?
Tuesday had been considered the possible date for Theresa May’s third attempt to get her Brexit plan through the Commons. Now, all attention is focused on the European council summit on Thursday and Friday, at which the prime minister will desperately try to seek a new concession from the EU – and also discuss the length and terms of the extension to the departure period. The next steps will depend on that.

Could May just try for a third vote anyway?

In theory, but it seems a tough ask. If the DUP suddenly agree to the plan, bringing some Conservative Brexiter MPs with them, meaning her deal could potentially pass the Commons, there would be a temptation for the government to present the motion and call Bercow’s bluff. On Tuesday the Brexit secretary, Stephen Barclay, said he believed even an extension to the departure deadline could be sufficient to allow a new vote. But Bercow had been seemingly clear – to circumvent his ruling would need more than just a change to the politics surrounding the deal, it would need something different within the actual motion.

Lori Lightfoot targeted in homophobic flyers: ‘Hate has no place in Chicago.’
    By Gregory Pratt
    Chicago Tribune

Chicago mayoral candidate Lori Lightfoot denounced homophobic campaign flyers targeting her that surfaced around the South Side over the weekend, saying “hate has no place in Chicago.”

Lightfoot, who is openly gay, made the comments at a City Hall news conference Monday morning where she accepted endorsements from several labor unions, including the organization that supports CTA workers.

Lightfoot was responding to questions about the flyers, which show a photo of Lightfoot and her wife with their arms around each other. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle also denounced the flyers when asked Monday.

The flyers read: “The Feminist and Gay Movement Have Come Full Circle!”

Underneath their picture, they say, “The GAY EQUALITY ACT!!! ITS OUR TURN.” Below that, in red ink, are the words, “1st openly gay woman in City Hall.”

The back of the flyers say Lightfoot is “pro law enforcement,” and add, “All contracts, jobs, and employment newly assigned exclusively to gay people!”

Wisconsin focus group suggests Trump’s dishonesty is a problem
    03/19/19 10:06 AM
    By Steve Benen

Democrats suffered a series of bitter disappointments in the last presidential election cycle, but Donald Trump’s narrow victory in Wisconsin was among the most severe. The Badger State had supported the Democratic ticket in each of the last seven presidential elections – Barack Obama carried Wisconsin with relative ease in both of his national races – but the state nevertheless backed Trump by about 0.7% of the statewide vote.

It’s against this backdrop that Axios reported yesterday on a focus group conducted in Appleton, Wis., featuring a group of swing voters, most of whom voted for Obama in 2012, before switching to Trump in 2016. There were a variety of interesting takeaways, but one of the things that stood out for me was a common thread among some of the voters who backed the Republican, but who aren’t sure about voting for him again.

“I think he’s a dirty crook that lies, cheats, and steals when he can,” said George Engelmann, a 49-year-old Obama/Trump voter. […]

Adam K., a 47-year-old Obama/Trump voter, said he wishes Trump would own the things he’s lied about. “He’s been caught in a lot of lies. … You know, just admit that you made a mistake and say ‘I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.’”

Amanda S., a 39-year-old Obama/Trump voter, said: “He’s getting stuff done, but he lies. I don’t think he’s a very good person, but he’s getting stuff done, so it’s hard.”

What the PHUCK is he getting done? Just name 3 things that if you aren’t rich, he’s ‘gotten done’.
Phuck outta here with that idiocy.

Supreme Court Rejects Challenge to Jason Van Dyke’s Prison Sentence

The highest court in Illinois has rejected a petition filed by special prosecutors and state Attorney General Kwame Raoul that sought to contest the nearly seven-year prison sentence handed down to former Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke for the 2014 murder of Laquan McDonald.

The Illinois Supreme Court on Tuesday denied a mandamus petition sought by Raoul and special prosecutor Joseph McMahon, who said Van Dyke received an “improper sentence” following his conviction in the high-profile murder case last year.

Six of the seven Supreme Court justices heard the case. Justice Mary Jane Theis did not take part. Justice Thomas Kilbride concurred in part and dissented in part, while Justice P. Scott Neville Jr. dissented in full. All others concurred with the ruling.

The court’s decision comes just over a month after McMahon and Raoul first filed their petition – an extremely rare move for prosecutors to take once a case is essentially finished.

Van Dyke shot the 17-year-old McDonald 16 times in the middle of South Pulaski Road on Oct. 20, 2014. Police had learned McDonald was carrying a knife and had attacked a truck driver only minutes earlier. Prosecutors said at trial 14 to 15 seconds passed between Van Dyke’s first and last shots. McDonald was on the ground for 13 of those seconds.

The DNC will get no contributions from me unless they enforce a rule about candidates releasing their tax returns. All candidates need to release their tax returns of at least 5 years or they should not be allowed to be part of the Democratic debate.

Bernie Sanders is not a Democratic Party member, and refusing to release his tax returns normalizes Trump not releasing his. This is completely unacceptable to your party members.
