Friday Open Thread |Bye Bye, Little Susie šŸ˜”

Aside from the Turtle, if thereā€™s someone that I want gone in 2020, itā€™s that phony azz Susan Collins from Maine. She pretends that sheā€™s a moderate, when she has done nothing but vote in lockstep with the GOP.
Every once in awhile, she does something meaningless to push the fallacy of her being a ā€˜moderateā€™.

Collins eyes second letter to AG Barr on fate of health care law
05/03/19 10:48 AM
By Steve Benen

From Politico:

Sen. Susan Collins wants Attorney General Bill Barr to reverse the Justice Departmentā€™s aggressive move, seeking to obliterate the Affordable Care Act.

In a letter to Barr on Monday, the Maine Republican argues that if the Trump administration wants to change the health care law, it should come to Congress and ask. Otherwise, Barrā€™s department should be defending the law from a lawsuit seeking to cripple it, she says.

ā€œRather than seeking to have the courts invalidate the ACA, the proper route for the administration to pursue would be to propose changes to the ACA or to once again seek its repeal. The administration should not attempt to use the courts to bypass Congress,ā€ Collins wrote to Barr, whom she supported in his confirmation vote in February.

A letter? Really?

But, letā€™s put the votes, that actually matter in this situation, from Little Susie in context.

Collins, whoā€™s up for re-election next year, is in an awkward spot. The Republican senator voted against the Affordable Care Act; she voted for the tax legislation thatā€™s imperiled the ACA; she voted to confirm Bill Barr as attorney general; and though we donā€™t yet know how the case will play out in the courts, itā€™s entirely possible she also voted to confirm some of the federal judges who may yet side the with the Trump administration against the health care law.

So, see, when the ACA came up originally, she couldnā€™t be bothered to vote for it.

The GOP Tax Scam that took aim at the ACA ā€“ she was in in.
Barr- who folks like me knew was bad news ā€“ she voted for him.

All those Federalist Society Judges, who are not only anti-ACA and Abortion ā€“ she has voted in lockstep for them.
Lest we forget her vote for the sexual assaulter that was just put on the Supreme Courtā€¦

Oh no, Little Susie. Youā€™re eyeballs deep in responsibility for the peril that the ACA is in.

We need to find a good Democrat to get rid of this horrid woman. Ted Cruz is more honest than her ā€“ he doesnā€™t pretend to be anything other than who he isā€¦while all she is in dripping in a cloak of phoniness.

This is that stress test to see how far folks will go to assert and protect their white supremacy no matter how criminal, inferior, immoral, dumb, treasonous… and no matter how much damage is done to our country, democracy, union..and the idea that was America ..

Look, in the last 2 days I’ve had to give 3 white women the 411 on exactly who voted for 45, regardless of Russia’s interference

    VOTER SUPPRESSION
    GERRYMANDERING

And then the cold hard facts right here:
53% WHITE WOMEN VOTED FOR 45

    The 53 percent issue
This time, the problem in American feminism has a name

Even though a majority of white women voted for Trump, white feminists are now urging resistance to his presidency. Theyā€™ve called for solidarity across racial lines and for a massive Womenā€™s March on Washington the day after the inauguration.

    BLACK WOMEN—HOLD THE FUCK UP

But a vocal segment of women of color, especially black feminists, are saying, hold up, pump the brakes. While white feminists are issuing all-hands-on-deck calls to stand against a Trump presidency, these women say, they havenā€™t worked hard enough to even win over a majority of their own ranks. (Polls show 94 percent of black women ā€” the highest percentage in the nation ā€” voted for Hillary Clinton, as did 69 percent of Latinas.)

    @Baud:

Ireland overturned their abortion laws not as a result of a woman seeking an abortion, but because the abortion law was applied to a pregnancy- a delivery. Every single pregnancy is included. The 6 week ban (I think) was drafted to deliberately to oversee every pregnancy. They went out of their way to include as many women as they could possibly could under the new state law pregnancy statutes. Youā€™re covered under these laws before you even know youā€™re pregnant. The clerics and religious panels intrude 2 weeks in. From that moment on youā€™re subject to their evaluations of your medical needs. You can be refused medical care for a miscarriage based on a religion you donā€™t practice.

What we have to get across to people, woman specifically, is that the new state laws on abortion apply to every pregnancy.

Theyā€™re not abortion laws. They are pregnancy laws.

Far Right religious are drafting laws and regulating every single pregnancy. This gives then carte blanche to use the state to enter YOUR pregnancy and sniff around looking for violations of their religious tenets. The entry point isnā€™t ā€œabortionā€, itā€™s ā€œpregnancyā€. Youā€™re then in the class of people they can reach.

Looking at these state laws on ā€œabortionā€ (although of course they cover every single pregnancy) I think we can now say that every conservative who said liberals were over-reacting was wrong.

The laws are worse than even I anticipated. Shockingly restrictive and punitive, poorly considered, and guaranteed to have all kinds of negative consequences for ALL women. They massively over-reached.

The same thing happened with voting laws. All the sophisticates and fancy lawyers on the Right said gutting the Voting Rights Act wouldnā€™t matter. Then came the far Right state laws.

Weā€™re getting a hard lesson on why these rights had to be specified and codified at the federal level in the first place.
