A Somerville man remains on life-support one month after he was released from the Burleson County jail and his family is still left wondering how and why he ended up in critical condition.
Chester “CJ” Jackson, Jr., 30, was arrested by the sheriff’s office on April 19 in front of his home and booked into the county jail on one charge of public intoxication.
Jackson’s family says they were notified of his release the following day, but when his mother went to the jail, they would not allow her to see him.
Two days later, the family learned the father of 3 was in an Austin-area hospital with no explanation from the sheriff’s office. Jackson was in a coma with small puncture wounds that resemble taser prong marks on various parts of his body, according to the family’s attorney, U.A. Lewis.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office last month told KBTX a deputy “provided a courtesy transportation to a MHMR facility in Austin” for Jackson on the day he was released.
“He was no longer in our custody,” said Investigator Christine Labertew in an email on April 29.
On Monday, members of Black Lives Matter, friends and family of Jackson gathered in front of the Burleson County Sheriff’s Office for a rally and news conference.
According to Lewis, Sheriff Thomas Norsworthy has promised video proof of Jackson entering and leaving the jail in good health, but so far authorities have released none of the recordings and documents that have been requested under Texas open record laws.
“All these facts point to foul play, by each person involved with the custody and care of CJ. It is evident by the withholding of information to his family” said Lewis.
“Withholding information at critical times like this goes on far more often than the public realizes,” said attorney Shardae Parker.
“We will get answers, and when we do, if there was any foul play, which I believe there is, we make sure that those involved are brought to justice,” said activist, Ashton Woods of Black Lives Matter in Houston.
KBTX attempted to speak with Sheriff Norsworthy following the news conference, but an employee at the agency said he was unable for comment.
News 3 has filed a formal open records request with the sheriff’s office for multiple documents and recordings related to the arrest and detention of Jackson. We’ll keep you posted on what is released.

BURLESON COUNTY, Tex. (KBTX)- The attorney representing a Burleson County man who was put on life support following a brief stay in the county jail has provided KBTX video evidence showing a Caldwell police officer throwing her client while in handcuffs.
The video, which you can watch in the player above, shows two times when Chester Jackson, Jr. falls to the ground. After one fall, an officer says to Jackson, “Hey, you fell.”
In the second fall, Jackson bounces off a metal bed and appears to hit his head against a toilet.
“There is a video of Chester Jackson, Jr. having a severe mental crisis in jail, just as his mother stated,” said U.A. Lewis. “The video depicts the Caldwell police sergeant who was suspended, throwing Chester, causing him to hit his head twice.”
Lewis says the video also shows the officer, whose name has not been publicly released, refuting the claims that he threw Jackson, by stating instead he fell.
Lewis says she obtained the video Friday night and it shows the incident happening at 11:23 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.
The officer was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, according to Caldwell Police Chief Charles Barnes. The Texas Rangers are also assisting with the investigation.
Jackson, 30, of Somerville, was arrested last month on a public intoxication charge near his home by a Burleson County deputy.
After making a guilty plea, he was sentenced to a one-day stay at the county jail. During that weekend, Jackson was transported by a deputy to a hospital in Austin where he was listed in critical condition.
Lewis says Jackson remains in the hospital in critical but improving condition.
“It should not have taken this long for us to obtain this video. I’m also upset that there were other officers there who saw this and didn’t come forward sooner than they did,” said Lewis. “It’s absolutely troubling that they knew he was having a mental crisis, and this is how they treated him.”
Lewis says Jackson’s parents have seen the video and it made them sad. “It hurt them,” she said.
Lewis said it’s possible that legal action is pursued in this case, but it’s too soon to say for sure. “We’re still going through the information we’ve collected.”
The Houston-based attorney also claims important documents in the case are missing, including records of the arrest, the guilty plea and the sentenced handed down by a Justice of the Peace following Jackson’s arrest.

CALDWELL, Tex. (KBTX)- Hours after authorities announced a Caldwell police officer was accused of misconduct with a former jail inmate, the Burleson County Sheriff released a statement saying the man’s family has his full sympathy.
Caldwell Police Chief Charles Barnes on Friday confirmed a city officer was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into alleged misconduct involving Chester “CJ” Jackson, Jr., the Somerville man who remains in critical but improving condition at a hospital.
This news came four days after the chief claims he first learned of the alleged misconduct involving one of his own officers, although his arrest occurred more than a month ago.
It’s also worth noting these important developments didn’t come to light until the Friday evening of a holiday weekend when news viewership is lower than normal.
Jackson, 30, was arrested on April 19 on a public intoxication charge outside his home by a Burleson County deputy, according to his family and attorney. They also say authorities have been unable to provide records or documents related to his arrest.
It’s unclear at what point a Caldwell police officer may have come in contact with Jackson.
His family says Jackson was released on April 20, but remained detained in the jail because he was acting in a “dangerous” manner.
On Monday, April 22, his family learned he was in the hospital on life support. The sheriff’s office confirmed to KBTX it was one of their own deputies who transported Jackson from the jail to the medical facility in Austin, but details on what led up to his condition remain uncleared.
