Live: First Democratic presidential debate of 2019— Night 2

The first Democratic debates are here, with 2020 contenders converging in Miami over two nights — first on Wednesday, again on Thursday — in a crucial battleground state.

In the initial months of the campaign season, the presidential hopefuls have sought to break out from a sprawling field. These 20 Democrats are hoping to reach Democratic primary voters beyond visits to coffee shops and house parties in early-nominating states — and to reset the playing field.

The two-night event, airing at 9 p.m. EDT on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo, continues Thursday with 10 different candidates.

After a wonky, relatively cordial opening night, with only a few moments of sparring between competitors, the Thursday debate will give the next slate of candidates their first opportunities to differentiate themselves and pitch a wide array of policy prescriptions on the major issues like climate change, gun control, health care, foreign policy, immigration and criminal justice reform.

California Sen. Kamala Harris
South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg
Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet
New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand

California Rep. Eric Swalwell
Spiritual author Marianne Williamson
Entrepreneur Andrew Yang

    IIRC in 07 I think it was Soledad O’Brien who did an interview with Michelle Obama & said Barack Obama has 25 percent of the Black vote and Michelle said that will change. PBO didn’t attack Hillary to get the Black vote. He couldn’t afford to. He shined and that’s how he got it.

      Kamala Harris is running for POTUS, and as a Black woman, she knows what time it is. Don’t think for one minute that her opponents wouldn’t open up a can of whoop ass on her to get and stay ahead in the polls.

      Like I said, she knows how to play the game, and she’s playing it to win. I ain’t mad at her.

    I didn’t like that move Kamala made against Joe. She had already created buzz with the food fight line but then was so thirsty for attention. Kamala planned that attack. I do not feel good about what she did.

      I can read candidates’ policies on their websites. Better yet, most candidates talk a good talk, until they get elected, and then REALITY CHECK!!!

      We need a candidate that can VERBALLY whip the living daylights out 45.

    Harris was commanding. Buttigieg performed well and likely got onto the radar of folks who only just started to pay attention. Biden and Sanders did not do themselves any favors and I wonder if their poll numbers slip. Yang did not do a good job of explaining the one issue he’s running for. Hickenlooper, Bennet, Gillibrand, and Swalwell did ok but didn’t land anything substantial. Williamson is inspiring a lot of hilarious tweets, so that’s probably not good if she wants to be taken seriously.

    We are living in a country where the first black First Lady of these United States is to this day is still dehumanized because of her dark skin… and called an ape and and ‘tranny’ and everything but a child of God..

    And this, unrelentingly for the past almost 12 years … and all to crickets from the now suddenly ‘woke’ black folks and feminists who never spoke up or pushed back on her behalf..

    Or the media who either ignored it all, joined in, or sniffed and told her to suck it up and be ‘grateful’ for all the ‘opportunities’ America had ‘generously’ ‘given her’.. And á la the likes of Chris Matthews, scolded her and her husband for not being ‘grateful’ enough..

    But here we are now suddenly, and Joe Biden.. the person who actually really had the back of the historic President through thick and thin, as his VP …is now being harangued on the basis of drummed up racial policies of yore, spearheaded by white supremacists who had the power and were the ruling majority… by a mixed race woman who had absolutely no qualms soliciting and taking money from the treasonous buffoon – in the thick of his Birtherism and him racially attacking the historic president and endangering and inciting hate and death threats on the historic President and his endlessly racially dehumanized black wife and their minor daughters..

    Forgive me if I call bullshit..

    And if folks buy this crap, America deserves not just 4 more years of a treasonous buffoon, but the stranglehold actual white supremacists will have over this country, its courts, etc. for decades to come..

          The measure of real power and capacity, is the ability to not only be an original, create new bars, and raise it.. but do it with honor..

          The reason America elected its historic President was because he was an original, stood out for the best reasons, and was just that.. in addition to his rare talents, he was for all intents and purposes, honorable… and he didn’t do gratuitous..

          And most importantly, he created his own playbook.. a new way of politics.. not the phony, contrived, dishonorable sort ..

          Meanwhile, she’s as glaringly mediocre as she’s glaringly rehearsed, opportunistic and with no real conviction or vision.. she rips off others and recycles and blows with the wind..
          And it’s not about the greater good, no matter this now fake ‘blackness’ …it’s all self-aggrandizement and all about her own blind ambition.. nothing to do with black folks s a whole.. or for the greater good..

          Biden might have demurred when it came to pushing back hard at her and her preening fakery..

          But in the end, it is important to note that the treasonous buffoon and his supporters have no such qualms about race, gender, chivalry and playing nice..

    Joe Biden is a gentleman and for all intents and purposes, honorable.. He bit his tongue as the rehearsed, mediocre, fluffed-up opportunist propped up through the electoral ranks by state party poobah, tried to create a ‘moment’ at his expense..

    Same as when the mediocre, fluffed-up manufactured candidate came for the historic president on the matter of immigration/deportation.. pretending that she gave ‘instructions’ to the sheriffs to ‘not act’ on the historic president’s deportation of those undocumented who’d committed crimes..

    Yet somehow never found the cojones to ‘instruct’ the same sheriffs to stop murdering black folks on the daily… or ensure and put new rules in place over the justice apparatus she undeservedly was elected to oversee, to stop destroying black lives in various ways under the ‘justice’ system she supposedly ran..

    Opportunism, blind ambition, cheap artifice will never trump integrity, honor, loyalty, real substance..
