Thursday Open Thread | Jeffrey Epstein found injured in federal jail cell

Jeffrey Epstein, the Palm Beach millionaire who was arrested earlier this month on child sex-trafficking charges, was found injured in his New York jail cell Wednesday, News 4 New York reported.

The station said Epstein, 66, was found in the fetal position and had marks on his neck, citing sources close to the investigation. The station said it may have been a possible suicide attempt, quoting sources.

Last Thursday, Senior U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman in New York ordered the accused serial sexual predator to remain incarcerated at the Manhattan Correctional Center. Berman, who listened to testimony from two women who said they had been abused by Epstein as teenagers, said Epstein was a danger to young girls.

Epstein’s attorneys had requested that Berman let him stay in his Upper East Side Manhattan mansion. They offered to use his personal fortune as collateral to guarantee his bail, and promised to pay for his own private security force to keep him essentially imprisoned in his own home.

But Berman said a jail cell would provide the most protection for Epstein’s victims and would prevent him from leaving the country.

Epstein’s arrest came eight months after the Miami Herald published a three-part investigative series, Perversion of Justice, which detailed how federal prosecutors in South Florida shelved a federal sex-trafficking indictment 12 years ago and granted a plea deal that allowed Epstein to serve just 13 months in a Palm Beach County jail. He was able to leave the jail six days a week on work release for his West Palm Beach office.

The deal was crafted in secret under Miami’s then-U.S. attorney, Alexander Acosta. Acosta was the Labor Secretary in the Trump Administration until he resigned, effective last Friday.

It was not clear if Epstein injured himself or if he was attacked, according to the station.

This is interesting. I saw the 1983 film The Dead Zone for the first time less than a year ago. I bought the DVD, watched it again several times and then read the book by Stephen King. And, yes it’s true. If you were to watch this film now you would think Stephen King is a prophet and that is even more true if you read the book.

Buried deep in this same Vanity Fair commissioned prop-up/hype-up fluff piece courtesy of the deep-pockets pushing this fluffed-up mediocrity, is at least a bit of a truth kernel:

“..Not everyone buys the idea that Harris is the next Obama, superficial similarities aside. “She’s overrated,” says a Republican grandee who still has battle scars from run-ins with the 44th president. “Obama had authenticity. “..An archive of more than 4 million photographs from the publisher of Ebony and Jet magazines will be given to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles and other cultural institutions.

The Ford, Andrew W. Mellon and John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur foundations and the J. Paul Getty Trust paid $30 million to acquire the archive from Johnson Publishing. The collection is considered by some to be the most important visual archive of 20th century African American life and culture.

Announced Thursday, the purchase is pending court approval since it is part of an auction of the company’s assets in connection with its bankruptcy proceeding.

The archive is a national treasure and one of tremendous importance to the telling of black history in America,” Ford Foundation President Darren Walker said in a statement. “We felt it was imperative to preserve these ..The archive includes photographs of political, social and artistic leaders — including Muhammad Ali, Aretha Franklin and Martin Luther King Jr. — as well as images of historic importance, such as the mutilated body of Emmett Till in his coffin…”

Why Mitch McConnell’s striking unpopularity matters
    07/25/19 10:00 AM—UPDATED 07/25/19 12:05 PM
    By Steve Benen
The latest national Fox News poll gauged public attitudes on a variety of prominent political figures, and it’s worth noting who finished last.

Donald Trump: 45% favorable, 51% unfavorable
Nancy Pelosi: 39% favorable, 50% unfavorable
    Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: 34% favorable, 41% unfavorable
Ilhan Omar: 26% favorable, 37% unfavorable
Mitch McConnell: 25% favorable, 47% unfavorable

To a very real extent, conducting national polling on the popularity of first-term congresswomen, seven months into their careers on Capitol Hill, seems a little odd. That said, the president has invested considerable energy into attacking Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Omar in recent weeks, desperately trying to convince the public that they and their allies are anti-American communists who support terrorism.

And yet, they both have higher favorability ratings than Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In recent years, the conventional wisdom in Republican circles has been that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s public standing is so poor, it’s effectively toxic. According to a recent book from Cliff Sims, a former aide in Trump’s White House, the president told then-House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) a couple of years ago, in reference to Pelosi, “Have you seen her? She’s a disaster. Every time she opens her mouth another Republican gets elected.”

With this in mind, GOP candidates and campaigns obsessively try to tie Democrats – even in races that have literally nothing to do with the U.S. House – to the San Francisco congresswoman.

In the Fox News poll, Pelosi may not be winning any popularity contests, but her favorability rating did reach a new high.

All of which raises the prospect of a new political dynamic.

To be sure, I don’t imagine McConnell cares in the slightest about poll results like these. Kentucky hasn’t elected a Democratic senator in a generation, and McConnell has won re-election before despite his unpopularity.

3 girls arrested in attack of 15-year-old with special needs captured on video, police say

    Updated at 10:49AM, July 25, 2019

CHICAGO — Three juvenile girls have been arrested in connection with an attack on a 15-year-old girl with special needs that was captured on video, according to Chicago police.

CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said three girls, ages 13, 14 and 15-years-old, are in custody and charges against them include Aggravated Battery and Mob Action. Supt. Eddie Johnson and Area Central Detectives will hold a news conference at 11:30 a.m. Thursday with details.

A video of the attack began circulating on social media Monday, but Chicago police said the girl was missing for five days before police were contacted.

Police said the girl may have also been sexually assaulted while she was missing.

The girl was located Tuesday night and taken to the hospital where she was treated and released. She went home with her father.

Community activist Stringer Harris, who spoke with the media before a police news conference Wednesday, identified the people who attacked the girl as six teens, five girls and one boy, between the ages of 15 and 18, who were her so-called friends. Police did not confirm this information.

Harris also said the girl suffers from a mental illness.
