That’s why I call it the American Experiment. I agree with this Twitter thread about the stakes for 2020. It literally is about America’s survival, and folks who don’t get that…..we can’t joke or waffle about it:

      And then we wonder why and how we lose.. how we always, always manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory…

      A bunch of mostly paid or ego-stroked media/social media types try to fluff-up and talk-up and whip up an artificial frenzy around underwhelming, one-dimensional, mediocre, manufactured career pols with no conviction or vision – outside of their own self-aggrandizement and political ambition… and precious little to show for been propped-up from one elective office to the next through the years by a corrupt state party machine.. try to insist that their fluffed-up person is ‘ really, really happening’ …really catching on.. and that we all ought to get onboard..

      There will be yet another wake-up call for us if this ends up playing out as the social media bubble brigade dictates..

      I’m not a Hillary person, but there is not even any comparison..

      Hillary was an infinitely superior candidate/politician/human.. by every measure..

      I’ll take Hillary over any day …and that’s saying a lot..

      That the media and certain folk are pretending that this slate of Dem candidates aren’t in fact mediocre, and for the most part, utterly unimpressive, has to be the biggest joke played on us..

      …the continued elevation of the treasonous buffoon and his endless criminality and traitorous shenanigans, aside..

      P.S:

      If ‘taking it to the treasonous buffoon on the debate stage’ (something that for all intents and purposes might not even happen if he – with the enabling of the media – suddenly opts out of debates and decides that he’s simply not interested)…

      If that is the only criteria for our next nominee, then we have already lost..

      Folks need to read the comments on the recent New York Times article for a sampling of what a vast majority of Democrats are actually thinking..

    A few days after a powerful earthquake hit the state last November, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R) issued an order increasing the power of the state’s budget office, led at the time by a woman who had lived in Alaska a mere two weeks.

    In her newly empowered role, Donna Arduin — an infamous budget-slashing expert — and Dunleavy went on cut to hundreds of millions from the state budget. They aim to trim even more in her second year in the remote state.

    It’s hardly Arduin’s first rodeo. The budget consultant has served in several Republican-led governor’s offices, slashing state expenses while cutting or resisting efforts to increase tax revenue.

    She’s also one of three leaders of the right-wing consulting firm Arduin Laffer & Moore Econometrics. Her partners are “Trumponomics” co-authors Arthur Laffer, the trickle-down economics evangelist, and Stephen Moore, who in May ruefully wished there was a “statute of limitations on saying stupid things” so he could’ve had a shot at joining the Federal Reserve Board.

    Since arriving in Alaska last year, Arduin has led the governor’s attempt to cut a whopping $1.6 billion in spending from education, social services, the arts, and nearly every other corner of state government. Between legislative cuts and line-item vetoes, Dunleavy has so far cut “almost $700 million” from the budget in his first year, Arduin said in an interview earlier this month, despite a failed recent attempt by the legislature to override his vetoes.

    “We’re about halfway solved,” she said. “We’re going to be looking towards reducing the budget another $700 million next year.”

    The University of Alaska’s Board of Regents, at a meeting in which they declared financial exigency last week, sounded less enthusiastic. The institution has been “crippled,” its president said, by the governor cutting roughly 40% of the school’s state funding — over $130 million. Thousands of students across the state found their state-funded scholarships suddenly defunded with the school year looming. “We will not have a university after February if we don’t make a move,” one regent noted.

    Another Alaskan who had scheduled a dentures appointment four weeks after having his teeth extracted was left with gums flapping in the wind, after the governor eliminated Medicaid dental coverage for adults. That saved the state $27 million.

    But the steep cuts aren’t surprising to Americans in several other states. Following an internship in the Reagan-era Office of Management and Budget and stints at Morgan Stanley and elsewhere, Arduin has crisscrossed the country slashing state budgets left and right.

    Did Trump’s pick for intelligence director misrepresent his record?

    It’s alarmingly easy to come up with a list of reasons Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) is a misguided choice to serve as the director of national intelligence. Almost immediately after Donald Trump tapped the far-right congressman for the gig, it became obvious that Ratcliffe lacks the appropriate experience, temperament, judgment, and credibility needed to oversee the entire U.S. intelligence community.

    But for now, let’s focus on just one of those.

    When the president announced his selection over the weekend, he specifically pointed to Ratcliffe having served as a former U.S. Attorney. It wasn’t immediately obvious why serving as a federal prosecutor would help prepare someone to oversee 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, but in theory, there could be some relevant overlap.

    If, for example, a former U.S. Attorney had extensive experience trying counter-terrorism cases, and it required detailed cooperation with intelligence officials and agencies, that could matter when evaluating candidates for a high-ranking intelligence position.

    So, did Ratcliffe try counter-terrorism cases and engage in detailed cooperation with intelligence officials? The Republican congressman’s website boasts that he “put terrorists in prison,” but NBC News reported that there is “no evidence he ever prosecuted a terrorism case.”

    The field of Democratic presidential candidates all vying to unseat President Donald Trump from the White House in 2020 is historically massive. While there are 24 legitimate candidates, it is more or less a five-candidate race by all realistic measurements: Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Pete Buttigieg.

    What each poll shows, whether in a national scope or narrowed down to specific early voting states, is that only a few candidates emerge at the top of the field, while the remaining dozen-and-a-half candidates barely crack 1%.

    Consistently, each poll paints a similar picture in which Biden holds a commanding lead, which has slimmed down a bit since he underwhelmed at the first primary debate in Miami, followed by a mix of Harris, Sanders, and the resurgent Warren. Buttigieg has maintained a strong showing after emerging from obscurity into an unlikely frontrunner.

    Central bank officials are expected to cut interest rates for the first time since the global financial crisis not because Trump demanded it. Instead, they will move in part because the president’s bruising trade policy has helped fuel a global manufacturing slowdown and injected deep uncertainty into executive suites around the world.

    Fed Chairman Jerome Powell won’t directly say it directly after his meetings Tuesday and Wednesday. But the central bank will reverse course at least in part to save the Trump economy from Trump.

    Kamala Harris Health Care Plan Exposes the Lie to ‘Single Payer’ Medicare

    This morning, Sen. Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign released outlines of her health care plan. She calls it Medicare for All, although far Left and single-payer purists are sure to raise a commotion over the name. But if we are being honest, her plan is actually much more deserving of that title than that of Bernie Sanders, for example. Kamala Harris’ plan is also politically smart, if disappointing for the purity crowd.

    The biggest change the Harris plan makes from the current system is to set public (FFS) Medicare as the default for most people – including the uninsured and newborns and allows people to opt to choose a different, private plan if they wish. She would also expand coverage, eliminate copays and deductibles after the 10-year transition period, and shore up the standards under which Medicare Advantage private plans operate. Her plan would hit the note on several consensus issues, such as addressing prescription drug prices, allowing re-importation, etc. Harris’s plan is, for all practical intents and purposes, an expanded version of Obamacare structured in a way to be able to lay claim to the name ‘Medicare for All.’

    Medicare in the United States has never been a ‘single payer’ plan. From the onset, Medicare has put a share of the cost on the beneficiaries in the form of premiums and copays, creating at least a dual-payer system (government and beneficiary). Since the 1970s, Medicare has had some form of private coverage option as well. Today, 22 million people are covered by private Medicare Advantage plans. While Sanders and the backers of a single-payer government-only health care system are already trashing Harris’s plan as not being a ‘real’ Medicare for All plan, in truth, it is Sanders and the ideological backers of a single-payer system who co-opted the term ‘Medicare’ because it works better as a soundbite and hides how truly drastic a departure their vision is from actual Medicare.

    The Biden numbers are objectively, pretty interesting. Again, just a hunch: they seem to indicate a propensity to return to him, even in the absence of tons of positive media attention. He hasn’t gotten a lot the past month. He’s been basically out of the news the past 2 weeks.
