He was selling water and gatorade to take advantage of the hot summer months. #BryantHenry was a go-getter. Part-time party promoter, part-time carpenter, part-time real estate investor, “BJ” worked odd jobs with his dad, pursued a college degree and charted his own path. He complained for days that the cop who eventually killed him was harassing him during his water selling efforts. On the day he was killed, he wasn’t even selling water. He was waiting for a family friend to meet him so that he could watch their kids. Police harassed him anyway. While officers tried to put BJ in handcuffs he did what we have all seen white people do and live to tell in countless viral videos, he “failed to comply” and he ran away. Officers briefly chased him down a subway tunnel and out of sheer laziness, poor training and disregard for life— decided to fire a taser gun at his back as he ran. I want to be clear, tasers are “less lethal weapons”, but they are still lethal. Accordingly, police protocol in Philly only allows them to be deployed on suspects that pose a threat to officers or the general public. Firing a taser at a fleeing suspect on a train track is not only bad policy, in this case it amounts to at the very least criminal negligent homicide. The shock from the taser gun threw BJ to the ground and on to the third rail of the train. 700 volts of electricity went surging through his body killing him. Philadelphia police lied about what happened; confiscated cell phone footage and claimed BJ came into contact with the rail on his own. Witnesses have now come forward upending these claims. BJ was killed by a brutal cop for selling water. Protest raged in Philly last night. Today his family will gather to remember him in a memorial service. My office has been retained to help get justice. I need you all to share this story until it trends on every platform.
