Friday Open Thread | White Arkansas woman arrested after pulling gun on black teens fundraising for football team

I drove my kids around to raise money for band trips, selling band calendars, cookie dough, raffle tickets. No way in hell I’d let my kids do this now….. the world has gone mad.

A white Arkansas woman earlier this week was arrested and charged after allegedly pulling a gun on a group of black teenagers who were going door-to-door to raise funds for a high school athletic program.

Jerri Kelly, the wife of Cross County Jail Administrator Joseph Kelly, is facing four counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor, according to The Associated Press.

The news service noted that Kelly turned herself in on Monday, just days after she pulled a firearm on four African American teenagers. Police in Wynne, Ark., said in a statement that officers on Aug. 7 responded to a “suspicious persons” report and found Kelly standing with a gun over a group of teens lying on the ground, Memphis TV station WMC noted.

Wynne Police Chief Jackie Clark said that an officer allowed the teens to stand up after appearing on the scene. The teens then told him they had been selling cards to raise money for a school athletic program when Kelly pulled a weapon on them.

The Wynne school system told WMC that two of the teens were wearing their football jerseys while they were fundraising.

Kelly turned herself in after the Cross County Sheriff’s Department put out a warrant for her arrest. She was released on Monday night on a $10,000 bond, AP noted.

Cross County Sheriff’s Department Captain Jeff Nichols told AP that Kelly did not receive a mugshot during her booking because of a “medical emergency” and added that he could not release more information because of medical privacy laws.

“She was afforded the same booking process and procedures as anyone that’s brought into our facility,” Nichols contended, apparently referencing her relationship to a county jail administrator. “She received no preferential treatment.”

Kelly was scheduled to make her first appearance before a judge on Thursday, WMC reported.

Wynne School District Superintendent Carl Easley has said that the district may stop door-to-door fundraising efforts in light of the incident.

A few years ago, my GOP-dominated state legislature here in GA passed a very restrictive immigration bill. When it was time to harvest crops, without immigrants to do the work, farmers lost millions, crops rotten in the fields. Nathan Deal [R,] governor at the time, decided to use probationers to replace immigrant labor. That didn’t work out well at all. Some of the probationers made it until the lunch break on their first day and refused to return. And, as you can imagine, the GA farmers supported Deal, the immigration bill, and Brian Kemp [R,] the new governor. Some people are resistant to change, even if GOPer politicians’ policies lead to their own ruin. Here, they’re hooked on jesus christ, guns, and being anti-abortion extremists. I wrote jesus christ instead of Jesus Christ to describe them because they show no signs of knowing the latter.
