Top Asylum Official Who Was Critical Of Trump Administration Has Been Reassigned
John Lafferty, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services asylum division chief, has reportedly been “pushed out” by Ken Cuccinelli, the agency’s hard-line acting director.

The top asylum official at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has reportedly been reassigned to a service center in Virginia — an apparent demotion lambasted by some immigration officials as “just another attack” by the Trump administration on the asylum system.

John Lafferty, who led the USCIS asylum division for six years, was “pushed out” this week by Ken Cuccinelli, the agency’s hard-line acting director, according to BuzzFeed, which first reported the news.

The asylum division under Lafferty had long been a “source of frustration” to the Trump administration, particularly senior White House adviser Stephen Miller, according to The Washington Post.

    ……………………..

Lafferty is a “pro-asylum” official who was well-liked in his division, a USCIS officer told the Post. “He clearly respected their work, and you could tell he wasn’t too enthused about the various new policies under the Trump administration.”

In July, BuzzFeed reported that Lafferty had penned a memo to staffers critical of a fast-tracked Trump administration policy that ended asylum protections for migrants who transited through another country before arriving in the U.S.

“We are once again being asked to adapt and to do so with very little time to train and prepare,” Lafferty wrote at the time. “If I didn’t know that we have some of the most dedicated, most adaptable and most talented public servants presently serving in the federal government I would be concerned about being able to implement these changes on such short notice.”

Kevin Hart Reportedly Suffered Multiple Spinal Fractures in Car Accident

    Jay Connor
    Today 10:13am

The details surrounding Kevin Hart’s car accident this weekend have slowly begun to trickle out, and now we’re learning the extent of his injuries.

TMZ reports that the Night School star suffered multiple spinal fractures that will require extensive rehabilitation:

Sources with direct knowledge tell us Kevin’s Sunday night surgery involved fusing the fractures … 2 of them in the thoracic section of his spine, and 1 in the lumbar. Although the procedure was a success, Kevin is still going through hell. We’re told he has to be heavily medicated because the pain is just that intense.

Symptoms for these types of fractures range from tingling to paralysis, and according to TMZ, often result in difficulties walking—which hopefully won’t affect his physical style of comedy. Hart is expected to make a full recovery, but the road ahead could be challenging.

“Kevin’s gonna have to rebuild his life somewhat. It may be a little different for Kevin from here on out,” Terry Crews told Us Weekly. “One thing I do know is that very few people would survive an accident that horrific. The fact that he survived […] I was just like, ‘Oh, my God.’ Amazing.”

An octogenarian serial burglar who’s eluded capture since 2014 — thanks to his unassuming grandpa look — has finally been nabbed by the NYPD after making off with nearly half a million dollars in loot, authorities said Tuesday.

Samuel Sabatino, 81 — who’s described by police as an “unassuming,” “old-school crook” — was caught on Saturday and charged with five counts of residential burglary for a string of recent break-ins — though cops are working to link him to dozens of other crimes he’s suspected of committing on the Upper East Side, officials said.

She was like, this was the time before he even announced, and people were dumping opposition research stories about Biden.

    In her words:
” They were not moved. Not one bit.”

    She said, I’m paraphrasing
” They KNOW Joe Biden, and even though, yes, a nice part of it is Obama nostalgia, a large part of it not only do they believe they know Joe Biden – they believe that Joe Biden CARES ABOUT THEM…..and, THIS is his secret with the Union people TOO – they say it over and over when talking about Biden.”

Students Repeatedly Posed in Blackface and Threatened Black Classmates. Their School Ignored, Lawsuit Alleges.
Six students, ages 7 to 18, filed a civil-rights suit against their school, claiming administrators exhibited “deliberate indifference” to repeated complaints of racist bullying.

Some white students at Chaska High School in Minnesota ended last school year the same way they began it: In photos, wearing blackface.

The academic year in the 28,000-person suburb began in September 2018 with white students attending a football game in blackface, and, in one student’s case, an afro. In December, a middle school student in the same district—located roughly 30 miles southwest of Minneapolis—found that his gym shirt had been stolen, vandalized with the n-word, and returned to his locker. In February 2019, two white students in the district put on charcoal face masks and put the photos on social media with the hashtag: #blackface.

That same month, another student allegedly posted on Snapchat, holding a gun, and threatened to shoot a list of students if they attended a Chaska High School assembly on race relations. In April, white students posted an image on Snapchat with the faces of 25 African-American students, calling the location “Negro Hill.”

The lede on a local news story in April began: “Chaska, it happened again. Another racially charged incident in Eastern Carver County Public Schools.”

    ………………………

Six current and former students from the district filed a 50-page civil-rights lawsuit in federal court against Independent School District 112, also known as Eastern Carver County Schools, claiming that teachers and administrators demonstrated “deliberate indifference” and failed to take “any meaningful action” in response to repeated complaints of racist bullying.

Trump takes $3.6 billion from Pentagon to pay for border barriers
    09/04/19 12:52 PM—UPDATED 09/04/19 01:24 PM
    By Steve Benen

The Washington Post reported last week that Donald Trump is so desperate to expand border barriers ahead of his 2020 campaign that he’s directed aides to “aggressively seize private land and disregard environmental rules.” Those who were caught running afoul of the law, the president added, would also be rewarded with presidential pardons.

Confronted with questions about contracting procedures and the proper use of eminent domain, the Republican reportedly replied that he expected administration officials to simply “take the land.”

The White House later seemed to confirm the crux of the story, though presidential aides said Trump was joking about the pardons. It wasn’t much of a defense.

But the desperation campaign continues, and it now includes the administration diverting $3.6 billion away from the Pentagon to pay for border barriers.

The move, which was authorized by Defense Secretary Mark Esper, will impact 127 different construction projects, Department of Defense officials told reporters.

Officials said that half of the money – $1.8 billion – would come from planned international projects and the other half, if needed, would come from domestic projects.

Why the demise of North Carolina’s gerrymandered map is so important
    09/04/19 11:20 AM—UPDATED 09/04/19 11:27 AM
    By Steve Benen

North Carolina’s state legislative map, heavily and carefully gerrymandered to protect the Republican majority, was rejected yesterday by a three-judge panel. It’s a big win for advocates of voting rights, which will likely have an effect that extends beyond the Tar Heel State.

Lawmakers’ partisan intent in drawing the maps, the “surgical precision” with which they were executed, and the distinct advantage the maps gave to Republicans violated the state’s constitutional protections of free elections, free speech and assembly, and equal protection under the law, the judges wrote in a 357-page ruling that reads as a stinging condemnation of partisan gerrymandering.

“The 2017 Enacted Maps, as drawn, do not permit voters to freely choose their representative, but rather representatives are choosing voters based upon sophisticated partisan sorting,” the judges wrote. “It is not the free will of the People that is ascertained through extreme partisan gerrymandering. Rather, it is the carefully crafted will of the map drawer that predominates.”

    …………………

All of which suggests voters will next year elect state representatives in North Carolina using a fair map featuring fair district boundaries, increasing the odds of Democratic gains. And why does that matter? Because a year later, state lawmakers in North Carolina will be responsible for drawing the district lines for legislative races based on 2020 census data.

A University of Illinois math major may find himself adding up the years in prison if he’s found guilty of a felony hate crime charge for hanging a noose in a campus elevator.

A female friend reported Andrew Smith to police after authorities say he found a piece of rope, fashioned it into a noose, and then hung it in an elevator at a residence hall on the university’s Urbana-Champaign campus, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Smith, 19, of Normal, Ill., was arrested Monday night and arraigned Tuesday on a felony hate crime charge and a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. He pleaded not guilty and was released on a $5,000 bond. His next court date was set for Oct. 22.
