I honestly didn’t see the depth of this bill in California until I saw it discussed at a blog. I haven’t been a fan of the NCAA since I was a kid. I have always thought that they got rich off of BLACK talent, and that, the exchange just didn’t even it out. Too many bad players out there (and I don’t mean those on the court) just ripping off Black youth.

So, I’m in full support of this bill, and I hope the Governor signs it.

EVERYBODY getting rich off these young Black players, and they can’t get anything?
Naw, Son.

NCAA Throws a Temper Tantrum After California Passes Bill to Stop It From Continuing to Exploit Student-Athletes

The tide is clearly turning, and that became even more evident on Wednesday when California passed a bill that allows college athletes to earn income from the use of their names, images, and likenesses, according to the Los Angeles Times.
On Monday, the state assembly voted 72-0 in favor of the bill’s passage and on Wednesday, the state Senate passed the measure with a unanimous 39-0 vote. Gov. Gavin Newsom now has 30 days to either sign or veto the bill, and should he decide to allow college athletes to run their coins, SB 206 will officially go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.

So there’s our happy ending, right? Not so fast.
The NCAA wants no parts of cutting any of their student-athletes a check and warned Newsom that doing so is “unconstitutional,” “harmful,” and threatens to jeopardize the sanctity of amateur sports.

And of course the Pac-12 conference—home to UCLA, USC, and other powerhouse programs—co-signed the NCAA and has begged the state legislature to pump the brakes.
But California state Sen. Nancy Skinner sees through the bullshit and is ready to fight for what student-athletes rightfully deserve: a slice of that multi-billion dollar pie.
“The NCAA has repeatedly lost anti-trust cases in courts throughout the nation,” Skinner told the LA Times. “As a result, threats are their primary weapon.”
Assemblyman Kevin Kiley also took the time to break down just how crippling and unfair the current status quo truly is.
“Forget shoe deals and video games,” he said. “NCAA athletes can’t make a little money over the summer coaching youth sports, can’t promote their social media, can’t model athletic wear, can’t accept groceries or help with rent or equipment. When a line in the sand is enforced obsessively, excessively and to the point of absurdity, that’s usually a sign it doesn’t belong there.”
Truer words have never been spoken.

 

 

The people that I was following at the blog believed that the Governor would sign it. And, the PAC 12 would lead the way. That, even if the schools didn’t want to do it to the NCAA , per se, they weren’t about to leave that West Coast TV money on the table. And, so, instantly, the PAC 12 would be desirable to the best athletes, because why sign up for those other schools when you could go to the PAC 12 school, AND get paid by Nike? The competitive recruiting advantage for even the lowliest of the PAC 12 schools would go up almost instantly. I hadn’t thought of the ripple effects, and can’t say that I’m upset about them. The NCAA is an archaic institution, filled with hypocrisy, that feeds off of young people that they don’t remotely protect. I wouldn’t be at all sad to see someone take a whack at them.

      And to think that there were those who were so sure that the problem was entirely with a certain generation of white folks..

      That as soon as that certain generation died off, white supremacy and its evils would die with them..

    I disagree. If you can’t see the racism of placing children that look like you in cages. And, that they mean harm to people who look like you… nothing to say.

    There is a reason why normally less than 10% of US vote Republican. Sadly, we have always had these Stevens from Django amongst us.

    There isn’t a policy position in the world, or series of them that can overcome those who believe that they are ‘special’ and ‘not like THOSE’ who the GOP is talking about…..
    Cause the positions on the important topics, the Democrats win hands down.

      Hate to say it, but the sad truth is that far too many actually completely bought into the whole totem pole hierarchical race/color ‘superiority’/‘inferiority’ thingy..

      The whole who’s ‘better’ (genetically ‘superior’) than the other.. based entirely on how much melanin (or lack) in their skin..

      That mindset has shaped and informed pretty much everything in forever.. entire cultures, societies.. everything..

      But it wasn’t just that white folks thought it, set it up and force-fed/instilled it in the rest.. but in time, far too many black folks bought into it, as did folks of other races too..

      White folks in the (superiority) penthouse.. black folks in the (inferiority) basement.. other folks somewhere in between..

      And in forever, as long as folks believed that they were at least not considered as ‘inferior’ …and perceived themselves to be a notch or several notches above those ‘inferior’ black folks.. folks did their darnedest to align with, to be yoked with those self-styled ‘superior’ folks up in the penthouse.. And that often meant distancing from, spitting on, and stomping just as hard on black folks..

      And so, here we are..

      And the unlearning of something so inculcated is a very hard thing..

      “…It was about a year ago when Steve Horner told young proprietors of the Wet Republic Ultra Pool at the MGM Grand that he had just transitioned to a woman and should be allowed to pay the woman’s price of $20 to get into the pool party. They looked him up and down and saw no signs that the person stood before them ever had any intention of being a woman for anything other than not paying the $33 entry fee for a man.

      The balding, pot-bellied, 68-year-old Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient was told to hand over his driver’s license. It identified him as a male.

      According to Horner — a former talk show host and writer of self-help books — his license caused a hastily summoned general manager to triumphantly declare, “You are a man.” Horner again said he could feel he was in the transition phase, that at that very moment he was a woman.

      The general manager told the St. George, Utah, resident to get lost if he didn’t pay $33.
      What did Horner do after leaving the pool area on July 10, 2015? He filed a formal complaint of discrimination with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department against the Hakkasan Group, which operates the pool. The cops ruled that they found no discrimination.

      Two months later, Horner filed another complaint against Hakkasan with the Nevada Equal Rights Commission. No longer, he wrote, should pool handlers be able to discriminate against someone when “that person’s gender expression and identity” is made clear. He wants $150 for driving to and from a pool party he couldn’t attend because he was “discriminated against.”

      He can’t understand why people can’t see he’s on a crusade for justice like Jesus, that he’s a civil rights warrior like Martin Luther King Jr.

      He says men one day will understand discounts ensuring bars and pools have beautiful babes isn’t as important as fairness. They’ll come to appreciate that he identified as a woman only for the cause of social justice. After all, he’s spent thousands of hours and more money than he could afford fighting for them to get fair treatment in bars and at pool parties. He’s written countless letters to lawmakers, licking stamps until his tongue felt like a Brillo pad.

      “Make sure you tell people I’m not some wacko,” he said.

    Because if gas prices double then it will literally be the last straw for the corn and soybean belt that is already suffering under Trump’s trade wars. They might be able to ride out the current corn and soybean prices with Trump’s subsidies. But if the cost of their tractor, combine, and truck fuel doubles then it’s literally game over.

    Same thing for the massive fleets of independent truckers who keep the just-in-time economy going and who (I suspect) vote heavily for Trump.

    And generally speaking, the more rural the area, the larger the gas guzzling trucks and SUVs in use and the larger the portion of monthly household costs goes to fueling up all their machines. A massive spike in gas prices is going to hit Trump-land about 100x harder than Blue America.
