Joshua Brown who who gave emotional testimony in the Amber Guyger trial was fatally shot in Dallas

A man who was a key witness in the murder trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was fatally shot Friday in the parking lot of his apartment complex, according to attorney Lee Merritt.

Joshua Brown was a neighbor of shooting victim Botham Jean, who was sitting in his apartment in September 2018 when Guyger walked inside and shot him to death.

Lee Merritt, attorney for Jean’s family, told CNN he spoke to Brown’s mother who confirmed the death.

Dallas police responded to a call for a shooting at the Atera Apartments complex around 10:30 p.m. Friday, police told CNN.

Officers were flagged down by witnesses who directed them to Brown, who was lying on the ground of the apartment parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Parkland memorial hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to a statement from Dallas Police.

Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots and saw a silver four-dour sedan speed out of the parking lot, police said.

Brown had no identification on him, so police couldn’t identify him until the medical examiner made a positive ID and notified the next of kin.

There is no suspect information at this time, police said.

‘He said it could have been him’

Merritt said Brown lived in constant fear of gun violence and that’s why he was emotional on the witness stand during the trial.

“He said it could have been him,” Merritt said.

Guyger, 31, was found guilty of murder a few days ago and given a 10-year sentence. She will first be eligible for parole in five years.

The ex-officer said she mistakenly walked into the wrong apartment in her complex and opened fire because she thought Jean was an intruder.

Local activists call for re-investigating fatal shooting involving Amber Guyger’s former police partner
By Cassandra Jaramillo and David Tarrant
      9:53 AM on Sep 25, 2019

Dallas police Officer Martin Rivera took the stand this week in the Amber Guyger trial, where prosecutors revealed that he and Guyger, his former police partner, had an on-again, off-again sexual relationship.

Rivera has something else in common with Guyger: The 17-year DPD veteran also shot and killed an unarmed man.

On March 22, 2007, Rivera shot 20-year-old Brandon Washington outside a Pleasant Grove convenience store, where the man was eating an allegedly stolen candy bar.

On Wednesday, Brandon’s mother, Antoinette Washington, joined a midday news conference in downtown Dallas by Mothers Against Police Brutality to demand that the death of her son be re-investigated.

She said she felt ill after seeing Rivera testify that he deleted his texts with Guyger after the shooting.

“It blew my mind to see him in another case,” she said. “I knew he was no good then. Justice has failed.”

Washington described her son as a goofy young man who loved to have fun and pull pranks. She said he didn’t have a violent history and had gotten in trouble only for criminal trespass. His nickname was “Lil Wimp” because as a baby, he couldn’t lift himself up as he crawled.

The night he was killed, Washington was suspected by a clerk of shoplifting a candy bar at a convenience store on Lake June Road in Pleasant Grove, according to news reports.

When Washington was slow to take his hands out of his pockets, Rivera shot him once in the head and leg, police records say. He died later.

No weapon was recovered from Washington, according to news reports at the time. The item in his pocket was a cellphone, his mother said.

A grand jury looked at the case, and Rivera was not charged with a crime.

  3. Pains my soul. Joshua Brown’s testimony was so emotional and powerful it made me cry. And now he’s been shot dead.

  4. FIND HIS KILLER! Joshua Brown was stalked and executed. We can’t have witnesses killed out of retaliation for their testimony. Joshua was already living in fear of his life. We need @FBI involved.
