Open Thread | Some Thoughts on Texas

So, I was waiting to see the whole picture of this Texas energy thing to see if I was missing something.

Out fellow citizens in the great state of Texas have been going through an ordeal.

An ordeal of the making of the Republican Party.
It’s been a perfect storm and epitome of an example of Republican Governance.

So, what happened in Texas?

The power infrastructure grid in Texas completely collapsed.

It collapsed because it was unregulated. It was designed to be separate from the rest of the United States, because they didn’t want to be subjected to Federal Regulations.

So, there are three power grids in this country, West, East and Texas.
Texas failed.

It failed because this was the design on Republicans trying to avoid Federal Regulations.

It failed because of the lack of federal regulations, the state of Texas was able to make its own rules.

It failed because of the lack of federal regulations, the state of Texas did not winterize any of its grid after a similar but smaller scale fiasco in 2011…because…nobody is going to tell Texas to spend money on infrastructure and cut down on their all-mighty profits.

It failed because of no winterization, because they don’t believe climate change is real.

Don’t let anyone tell you anything differently.
It didn’t fail because of the Green New Deal – which isn’t even legislation. And, even if it was, it would be FEDERAL legislation that they had opted out of.

Don’t let them tell you that it was the Wind Turbines that caused this.
Wind Power accounts for only 10% of the power grid in Texas.
TEN PERCENT
TEN PERCENT
How could something that only counts as TEN PERCENT be responsible for the wholesale power failure.
But, their wind power did fail – BECAUSE IT WASN’T WINTERIZED.

It’s the WINTERIZATION that failed.
No electricity plants winterized
No natural gas plants winterized
No nuclear plants winterized

BECAUSE, they were not subject to Federal Regulations.
BECAUSE, they wanted to keep things on the cheap, and not invest money that could be used as profits.

Rick Perry with his ridiculous azz talking about Texans would rather be without heat than to be subject to Federal Regulations.
Really?

Ted Cruise leaving the country while people in his state don’t have heat, water or food.

John Cornyn has vanished.

Abbott’s on Fox trying out whatever bullshyt lies that he thinks he can spin in the middle of this disaster – THAT IS MAN MADE.

The Board that would have overseen what little regulation there is in Texas?

NOT FUNDED AND DISBANDED.

Those that did sound the alarm?

Ignored.
As a result – people have died.
Homes are destroyed.

And now, I’m seeing things like this:

Stephanie Ruhle (@SRuhle) Tweeted:
NYT: My savings is gone,” said Scott Willoughby, a 63-year-old Army vet who lives on SocSec in a Dallas suburb. He nearly emptied his savings to pay the $16,752 electric bill charged to his cc-70x what he usually pays for all of his utilities combined. “…t’s broken me.” https://twitter.com/SRuhle/status/1363314664302641153?s=20

Russel L. Honore’ (@ltgrusselhonore) Tweeted:
As Texas deep freeze subsides, some households now face electricity bills as high as $10,000 https://t.co/ynSDQlA8Wk via @nbcnews Crying Damn Shame @JoeBiden @KamalaHarris @SpeakerPelosi @FEMA_Fenton @GovAbbott https://twitter.com/ltgrusselhonore/status/1363420238579179520?s=20

DA PHUQ?
DA PHUQ?

HOW IS THIS EVEN LEGAL?

Democrats need to go full throttle right now.
This is GOP Governance.
NO protection for the people
NO preparation for the possibility of this happening.
NO caring whatsoever about how their deliberate greed and incompetence has cost lives and livelihoods.
Put your foot on the necks of the Texas Republicans and make them OWN THIS.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THEM. THEY NEED TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE.

Go Beto. Go. I know that you are in the middle of helping the people of your state, but, you and Julian Castro need to create a tag team, bringing the fire against these people who have hurt so many.

    About the 500,000 dead:

I can’t dwell on this, because I would spiral into depression.
    The thing that haunts.
That will haunt until I am 99, if I live that long.
    I. Will. Never
    Not. Ever.
Get the feeling out of the bottom of my soul.
    That the election of 2016.
Could have prevented 90% of these deaths.
    Not 20
    30
    50
    I believe 90%
90% of 500,000 people would still be alive if Hillary was President.
    That’s what haunts.
    All those families broken.
All that pain. That didn’t have to happen.😭😭😭😭😭

Anyone with a brain can see they got nothing and just intend to bullshit shamelessly, confident that racism and voter suppression will put them back in power. https://t.co/kJCvQben3C

I’ve been watching the right-wing narrative regarding the Jan. 6 insurrection with keen interest, and realizing that the American right again intends to resort to its well-worn “waving the bloody shirt” gambit. A thread about what that will mean. /1/44https://t.co/Nfg1U2YuRS— David Neiwert (@DavidNeiwert) February 22, 2021
