Open Thread | Maybe People Had Time To Think During The Pandemic

We have states: Montana, South Carolina, who are turning down Federal dollars for unemployment.

The latest from the right -wing is that the Unemployment Benefits are too generous, and people don’t want to work.

I call bullshyt on that. People have had time to think, and they aren’t willing to work jobs for shyt wages and no benefits. Folks also forget to add that people don’t want to work jobs that have UNSAFE WORKING CONDITIONS. Now, what about the accusation of there not being workers applying for these shyt jobs. That might very well be true. After all, I will remind these same folks that they were the -OPEN THE ECONOMY NOW IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC -people. The official COVID DEATH TOLL is now approaching 600,000. There was a study released last week that said that number was too low. That the real number could possibly reach 900,000!

900,000!!!

Whether it’s 600k up to 900k…

THOSE PEOPLE WORKED SOMEWHERE.

And, then, what about the people who didn’t die from COVID, but that life altering physical conditions because of COVID, and are now among the disabled?
There are MILLIONS in this category. We have just begun to study them.

Then, there are those who were like, “well a majority of those were Senior Citizens.”

Well, guess what a lot of those Elders did? What they provided?

Low-cost to free childcare for their families.

There is a reason why the statistics for job loss during this pandemic have skewed in such a gendered way- WOMEN have shouldered the brunt of the job losses, because women have had to deal with what happened to their children.

Schools are not fully open, and neither is childcare. These are very real issues  facing working mothers all across this country.

Tired of people who wanted to OPEN THE ECONOMY before it was ready.

Wanted to open schools before they were ready..

Now, want to force people back into low paying jobs with no benefits under UNSAFE WORKING.

No, I don’t think so.😠😠😠

👏👏👏

Walensky calls the vaccines “95% effective.” But that has not been shown for the J&J vaccine, which has only been shown to be 67-72% effective at protecting against infection. So how can she say we’ll be safe? We could still contract COVID and end up as long-haulers. Explain?

Bright Moon @anniescot Replying to @MSNBC

Nope, not for me. Originally, the CDC reported we needed 70% vaccinated which, according to the CDC, we are far from!

CDC advisers vote to recommend use of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine in 12-15-year-olds

    By Maggie Fox, CNN

Updated 3:29 PM ET, Wed May 12, 2021

(CNN)US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisers voted unanimously Wednesday to recommend giving Pfizer/BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine to kids as young as 12.

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices agreed the benefits of vaccinating children and teens outweigh any risks from the vaccine.
The US Food and Drug Administration extended its emergency use authorization for the vaccine in 12-15-year-olds Monday.
“This is one more step to gaining immunity and bringing the pandemic closer to an end,” said Dr. José Romero, who chairs ACIP and who is also the Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Health.

“We still need to vaccinate the rest of the world, but we have made significant steps and are on the road.”

As my phenomenal and infinitely percipient historic FLOTUS correctly noted, politics as practiced, is not a noble profession..

The republicans are currently engaged in their ‘limited’ iteration of a circular firing squad that is really all about many of their a-holes’ individual political ambitions/aspirations …even if packaged as, and pretending to be about ‘fealty’ to their gross treasonous buffoon who happens to be ‘admired’ voice of their heavily white supremacist base..

Democrats meanwhile, ever so shortsighted, are doing their own more insidious but not always quite so overt tap dance.. with various Dem factions all doing their darnedest to try to buoy their middling ‘faves’ ..all while aggressively trying to take on and take out the Obamas.. because in order to elevate their ‘faves’ …and forcibly supplant the (to most of their chagrin) still popular Obamas with said ‘faves’, the Obamas (who just a few short while ago were still being yelled at to “do something”, and being made all sorts of impossible demands of), are now to be completely vanquished..

And so enter the ramped-up smears and baseless attacks on the Obamas …from Dems ..including many of whom just a little while ago were not only demanding that the Obamas immediately get on the campaign trail or else, and endlessly splicing images of their ‘faves’ with the Obamas, as a way to boost their ‘faves’..

Some are now going as far as openly collaborating with the likes of Maureen Dowd …curiously giving this certified malevolent racist a-hole unfettered access and ‘exclusives’ based entirely on lies and bogus narratives, intended to smear the Obamas.. specifically, these days, the unelected historic FLOTUS ..seeing as simply just targeting her elected 2-term presidential hubby just won’t do… they both have to be damaged and destroyed, in order to elevate and/or revive certain others..

For years, I’ve often wondered – including here on this site with my fam, how it is that Maureen Dowd happens to be great pals (and appears to still be after years of nonstop smears, insults attacks on the Obamas) with some of the very same high profile Democrats, supposedly ‘allies’ of the historic President..

Ms Dowd has had no problem getting unfettered access to, and arrogantly alluding to getting her info from said high-profile Dems and their families..

If I were the Obamas, I’d be extremely wary of even the most seemingly ‘harmless’ of these so-called ‘allies’ …including those who’ve had no qualms shamelessly riding the Obamas’ coattails -and expecting the Obamas to expend their hard-won popularity and political capital, to catapult these ‘allies’ into powerful positions …And all while on the sly, and not so sly, outsourcing their anti-Obamas attacks and smears to their malevolent buddies like Maureen Dowd..

And don’t even get me started on the rather ridiculous attacks on the Obamas courtesy of some of the ‘squad/hive’ idiots.. for the high crime of commiserating with the queen – in their capacity as a U.S Presidential First Couple – on the death of her husband… which had the ‘squad/hive’ imploding and resorting to the very same toxic antics, harmful lies, gossip, and slander, reminiscent of that of the British media which the ‘squad/hive’ pretend to fight against.. they’ve now actively smeared and now try to ‘cancel’ the Obamas for not publicly attacking the queen on behalf of their ‘fave’ -who not so long ago was actually unabashedly idolizing and ‘stanning’ Ivanka Trump.. at the very same time as the trumps were actively attacking and endangering the lives of the Obamas with their Birther lies..

    • eliihass says:

      LOL.. pffffffffttt..

“…When Donald Trump entered the 2016 presidential race, he was dismissed early on as a “RINO” — a Republican in Name Only — by Republicans across the spectrum: Former Mitt Romney consultant Katie Packer Gage called Trump “sort of the definition of a RINO — he’s just decided to be a Republican, you know, after cozying up to the Democratic Party for a lot of years.” TownHall columnist Kurt Schlichter didn’t use the acronym but assessed Trump as a “finger-to-the-wind charlatan” who compared unfavorably with “actual serious conservative candidates.”

And make no mistake, “RINO” is an accusation: The charge has long been intramural Republican shorthand for an ideological heretic — someone insufficiently faithful to conservative values. It was the sentiment that helped tea party-era figures such as Christine O’Donnell (“I’m not a witch”) purge Delaware’s former governor and congressman Mike Castle from the party; and that helped then-upstart Ted Cruz win his Senate seat in the 2012 Texas Republican primary runoff over the establishment favorite, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.

But now that Trump is the Republican lodestar, heresy isn’t measured in terms of conservatism, but fealty to him. And the term RINO may as well refer to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) — whose solid conservatism is out of step with today’s GOP.

This week, she’ll likely be ousted from her position as the No. 3 Republican in House leadership for her unwillingness to toe the line on Trump’s insistence that the 2020 election was marred by massive voter fraud…

The backlash has nothing to do with her conservative bona fides. Cheney, whose dad is former vice president Richard B. Cheney, is her father’s daughter: a foreign policy hawk in the tradition of yesteryear’s GOP-ascendant neoconservatives. She’s a Reaganite three-legged stool conservative — social, economic, foreign policy — with a 100 percent National Right to Life rating, an 82 percent rating from Heritage Action for America, a 74 percent rating from the American Conservative Union Foundation and a 65 percent rating from the Club for Growth. If conservatism were the measure, you’d expect her to compare unfavorably with others in party congressional leadership, or the member challenging her for her position. But that’s not the case.

Consider House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) effort to boot Cheney and elevate Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) in her place. During Trump’s first impeachment, Stefanik emerged as a key ally of the president*. This came as a surprise to many, because Stefanik was never before seen as a Trumper. An alumna of the George W. Bush White House, she — like Cheney — has a hawkish record on foreign policy. In 2019, she and Cheney were co-sponsors of the “Ensuring a Secure Afghanistan Act,” aimed at keeping U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan at or above 10,000, a bill and a position that directly contradicted Trump’s view.

According to Politico, Stefanik voted with Trump 78 percent of the time, compared with Cheney’s 93 percent.

It’s not an accident that Cheney name-checked Reagan in her op-ed.

…But if she loses her leadership position, it won’t only suggest that Republicans aren’t ready to shift back to tea party calls for fiscal discipline, or a more intervention-happy foreign policy. It may indicate a halfhearted commitment to fighting Democrats on policy in the here and now, vs. a robust interest in litigating November 2020 all the way into 2022 or 2024.

He endlessly inflames …and incites an insurrection, while he weaselledly grifts and grabs tax payer funded security for his family..

“…Donald Trump’s adult children reportedly cost taxpayers $140,000 in Secret Service security in the month after the clan’s patriarch left the White House in January.

Ordinarily, family members of a president lose their security detail when they leave office. But in the case of the four Trump siblings and two of their spouses, the former president issued a directive to extend post-presidency protections by six months.

The costs, obtained by the watchdog group Citizens for Ethics, do not include security protections at Trump properties in New Jersey, Palm Beach and Briarcliff, New York. With those factored in, the total would likely be far higher, according to the group.

According to the watchdog, records reveal that the Trump children maintained a “breakneck speed of travel, and racked up significant hotel and transportation bills for the Secret Service”. Transport costs alone amounted to $52,296.75, and hotel costs totaled at least $88,678.39.

If that schedule is maintained, the group estimates, post-presidency protection costs could nearly $1m. The group has previously calculated that the Trump family made 12 times as many trips in three years as the Obamas made in seven.

The Washington Post, which reported on Trump’s directive in January, found that extensions to Secret Service protections were also extended to former treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, former chief of staff Mark Meadows and former national security adviser Robert O’Brien.

Under federal law, Trump and his wife Melania are entitled to protection for their lifetime; their teenage son Barron receives his until he turns 16.

The watchdog found that Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump went from their jobs at the White House to a 10-day vacation in Utah, racking up hotel costs of $62,599. After a month in Miami, they stayed at Trump’s Bedminster golf property for three days in late February.

Eric and Lara Trump spent much of February at Trump’s Briarcliff property, interspersed with trips to New York, Miami and Palm Beach, at a cost of $12,742.

Donald Trump Jr also spent time in New York City, on Long Island, and in upstate New York, racking up bills of $13,337.

But Citizens for Ethics said the Secret Service did not provide records of spending at Trump businesses…”

    • eliihass says:

“…In the days before he left office, President Donald Trump instructed that his family get the best security available in the world for the next six months, at no cost — the protection of the U.S. Secret Service.

According to three people briefed on the plan, Trump issued a directive to extend post-presidency Secret Service protection to his four adult children and two of their spouses, who were not automatically entitled to receive it.

Trump also directed that three key officials leaving government continue to receive the protection for six months: former treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, former chief of staff Mark Meadows and former national security adviser Robert C. O’Brien, two people familiar with the arrangement said.

Under federal law, Trump, his wife, Melania Trump, and their 14-year-old son are the only members of his immediate family entitled to Secret Service protection after they leave office. The couple will receive it for their lifetimes, and Barron is entitled to protection until he turns 16.

Trump wanted every family member who had been protected by the Secret Service during his administration to be covered for six additional months, according to the people familiar with his directive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe security arrangements.

That means the expensive, taxpayer-funded security will continue for daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner; son Donald Trump Jr.; son Eric Trump and his wife, Lara Trump; and daughter Tiffany Trump.

…it is highly unusual for a departing president to provide 24-hour security to relatives who are adults long past their college years. It’s unclear what precedent there is for a departing president to extend this same protection to aides after they have left his administration.

The perk for the Trump family is expected to cost taxpayers millions of dollars and further stress the elite federal security force, which in the past four years had to staff the largest number ever of full-time security details — up to 42 at one point, according to former senior administration officials.

The Trump family’s protection has been costly for the Secret Service’s budget, as his adult children traveled widely across the country and around the world for personal vacations and travel related to the Trump Organization, the family company.

From 2017 to 2019, government records show, Trump family members took more than 4,500 trips that required the Secret Service to travel alongside them, costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars…”

“…CARIGNANO, Italy — Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia, the son of the last king of Italy, gave his granddaughter a big 16th birthday present.

In a formal 2019 decree, the “Duke of Savoy, Prince of Naples and by the grace of God direct heir to Head of the Royal House of Savoy,” amended a medieval law that for centuries had restricted succession in his royal line to male heirs.

He bumped “our beloved granddaughter” Vittoria Cristina Chiara Adelaide Maria up the royal food chain, making her the first woman in 1,000 years to be invested with the authority to eventually lead the family and stake a claim to the defunct monarchy.

“It was the best gift he could give me,” Vittoria, now 17 and a burgeoning Instagram influencer, said from her Paris home.

While Vittoria’s father in Monte Carlo and mother in Paris were as delighted as her grandparents in Gstaad about her ascension to the top of Italy’s would-be royal family, a rival branch of Savoias were not pleased. Not at all.

“Totally illegitimate,” said Prince Aimone di Savoia Aosta, a cousin and rival claimant, who works as an executive for the Pirelli tire company in Moscow.

And so began the latest chapter in an ongoing dynastic dispute between the pretenders to Italy’s pretend throne. There are bitter feelings, thrown punches, warring noble committees, dukedom politics and as of last month, Vittoria’s ascending social media status.

What there is not is an actual crown to fight over.

“Never heard of her,” said teenagers, middle-aged shoppers, and old men with canes as they walked near the Piazza Savoia, once home to a castle, now a parking lot.

Prince Aimone, Duke of Puglia, declined to meet for an interview in the Tuscan country estate of his father, Prince Amedeo, Duke of Aosta, who was reportedly punched twice in the face by his cousin, Vittorio Emanuele, at the 2004 wedding of the future King Felipe VI of Spain. Soon after that altercation, Amedeo claimed to be the legitimate Duke of Savoy.

“To put it mildly, it is not a good relationship,” Aimone said in a phone interview. But he said he wanted to avoid a public shouting match with his cousins “over something that doesn’t exist. I try to be more dignified if possible given the great responsibility of such a name.”

Regal condescension runs in the family.

He scorns cousins who, he said, were never important enough to even exile…”
