“I Have a Dream” Speech (1963)

Then: At the open-air park on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his rousing call for equality on Aug. 28, 1963. King spoke for 17 minutes. With eloquence and drama, King demanded an end to discrimination in America. His speech was considered the high point of what began as the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” – a push that drew an integrated crowd of more than 200,000 people.
