Bond qualifies
February 1966 — Representative-elect Julian Bond, barred from his seat in the Georgia House Jan. 10, qualified as a candidate for his seat in a special election set for Feb. 23. Here, Betty Pope, a secretary in Secretary of State Ben Fortson’s office, prepares the papers for Bond to sign. Bond, 26, said he hopes he will not have to run because a federal court has under consideration the House refusal to seat him, “but I’ve got to be ready.”
