Our Maafa (African Holocaust) African Americans were captured and transported from many tribal communities to this country as slaves. Maafa, a Kiswahili word meaning “great disaster”, has been used by Afrocentric scholars to refer to the era of slavery.

In the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 the people of that new found territory had the ability to decide to become a slave state or a free state. While they both became neutral states they were soon admitted to the union in the

Dallas Freedmens Memorial Cemetary – Freedman’s Town became a place where Blacks could establish homes, build churches, and feel safe. The area became part of Dallas in during the years after Reconstruction.
