God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen (also known as God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen) is an English traditional Christmas carol. The melody is in Aeolian mode. It was published by William B. Sandys in 1833, although the author is unknown.[1]
Like so many early Christmas songs, this carol was written as a direct reaction to the music of the fifteenth century church, in Stories Behind the Best-Loved Songs of Christmas. However, in the as-yet earliest known publication of the carol on a circa 1760 broadsheet, it is described as a “new Christmas carol,”[2] suggesting its origin is actually in the mid-18th century. It appeared again among “new carols for Christmas” in another 18th-century source, a chapbook believed to be printed between 1780-1800.[3]

GOP House Decides 2nd Amendment Has Limits, Approves Gun Control Measure
By: Keith Brekhus
Second Amendment absolutists might be disappointed today upon discovering that the Republican controlled US House approved an extension of a gun ban. On a unanimous voice vote, the US House agreed to extend the Undetectable Firearms Act, continuing a 25-year-old prohibition against guns that can evade metal detectors and X-ray machines. The law was first put into effect in 1988, and signed into law by President Reagan. The House bill requires that any plastic gun have some piece of metal in it or on it so that it cannot be used to evade a metal detector.
This decision of course illustrates that even Republicans in the US House think there are limits to the 2nd Amendment. Even though they are fond of arguing that criminals do not obey laws apparently they are convinced that this particular law may be an exception. Of course, metal detectors are most often used in places like airports and courthouses, and perhaps Republicans think that these are locations where criminals and terrorists are not likely to enter anyway. Or maybe, just maybe, even Republican lawmakers are a little concerned that undetectable firearms do not really belong inside a crowded courtroom or a busy airport.
The Gun Owners of America organization however expressed opposition to extending the ban however. Mike Hammond, acting as legal counsel for the group, lamented that the law would not stop criminals who wanted to print guns from doing so. He went on to single out Congressional Democrats by complaining that “they’ve just spent all year trying to effectively destroy the gun lobby, so why in heaven’s name, given this intransigence, should we give them this Christmas present? Despite opposition to the measure from the Gun Owners of America, the legislation coasted through the House of Representatives on a bipartisan voice vote. While the bill represents the most basic of gun control measures, it does suggest that even Republicans in Congress recognize that second amendment freedoms are not absolute.

Kim Fields Gets Early Xmas Present: It’s a Baby Boy
By Staff Blogger
At 10:30 am on Tuesday morning, Kim Fields said hello to the latest addition to their family; a baby boy. Fields kind of stole the spotlight from Halle Berry over the summer, who surprised many by announcing she was pregnant at the age of 47. Fields being 44 years old also proved that women are getting pregnant and having babies beyond 40.
The former Living Single actress’ son weighed 8 lbs., 8 oz. at birth. “We are so blessed and grateful to God for this newest gift to our family,” said Fields and her husband who say they have been trying to have a baby but had challenges with conceiving.
The couple also have a son together, who is six years old.

Republicans see one remedy for Obama: impeachment
http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/dana-milbank-republicans-see-one-remedy-for-obama–impeachment/2013/12/03/e623d61e-5c65-11e3-be07-006c776266ed_story.html?hpid=z2
History will record that on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary met to consider the impeachment of Barack Hussein Obama.
They didn’t use that word, of course. Republican leaders frown on such labeling because it makes the House majority look, well, crazy.
It is, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said from the dais, “the word that we don’t like to say in this committee, and I’m not about to utter here in this particular hearing.”
One of the majority’s witnesses, Georgetown law professor Nicholas Rosenkranz, encouraged the Republicans not to be so shy. “I don’t think you should be hesitant to speak the word in this room,” he said. “A check on executive lawlessness is impeachment.”
This gave the lawmakers courage. “I’m often asked this,” said Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) “You got to go up there, and you just impeach him.”
Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.), who has said there are enough votes in the House to impeach Obama, added: “We’ve also talked about the I-word, impeachment, which I don’t think would get past the Senate in the current climate. . . . Is there anything else we can do?”
Why, yes, there is, congressman: You can hold hearings that accomplish nothing but allow you to sound fierce for your most rabid constituents.
The Republicans in the House know there is no chance of throwing this president from office. Yet at least 13 of the 22 Republicans on the panel have threatened or hinted at impeachment of Obama, his appointees or his allies in Congress. They’ve proposed this as the remedy to just about every dispute or political disagreement, from Syria to Obamacare.
Tuesday’s hearing was titled “The President’s Constitutional Duty to Faithfully Execute the Laws.” The unanimous view among Republicans was that Obama had not done his duty, and it’s true that this president has stretched the bounds of executive authority almost as much as his predecessor, whose abuses bothered Republicans much less (and Democrats much more).
TWO TERMS, BITCHES!

Wanker of the Day: Ed Rendell
by BooMan
Tue Dec 3rd, 2013 at 10:51:15 AM EST
I get the feeling that Ed Rendell wakes up every morning, brews himself a pot of coffee, and then spends the next few hours fielding phone calls from Washington reporters so he can talk shit about the president. And that is on the days that he doesn’t take a limo to New York City to talk shit about the president on the cable news programs. It appears to be a full-time job for Rendell, who having served as mayor of Philadelphia and the governor of Pennsylvania, has nothing better to do career-wise. I am assuming, at this point, that this is personal. Rendell clearly has some kind of grudge that he’s nursing. Yesterday, he was whining to Ron Fournier and today he is whining to Edward-Isaac Dovere of Politico.
I don’t understand the point unless Rendell is simply addicted to seeing his name in print. I don’t actually think that he’s doing it on the behalf of the Clintons, although his motivation probably stems from something that happened during the 2008 primaries. Rendell could probably count on a cabinet job in a Clinton administration without spending all his time tearing down Obama. It’s not clear that the Clintons even want Obama to be torn down, since a weak Obama will make it harder rather than easier for Hillary to win the presidency.
In any case, Rendell has turned himself into a clone of Harold Ford. He’s a walking joke.

Judge rules Detroit eligible for historic Chapter 9 bankruptcy, says pensions can be cut
2:22 PM, December 3, 2013
The city of Detroit today officially became the largest municipality in U.S. history to enter Chapter 9 bankruptcy after U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes declared it met the specific legal criteria required to receive protection from its creditors.
The landmark ruling ends more than four months of uncertainty over the fate of the case and sets the stage for a fierce clash over how to slash an estimated $18 billion in debt and long-term liabilities that have hampered Detroit from attacking pervasive blight and violent crime.

Charges dropped against teens arrested at bus stop
12/02/13 06:00 PM—UPDATED 12/03/13 01:24 PM
By Morgan Whitaker
UPDATED – Charges were dropped against three African-American teenagers who said they were waiting for a school bus last week when they were arrested by police.
“After reviewing the facts associated with these arrests, I have decided to dismiss the charges in the interest of justice,” said District Attorney Sandra Doorley in a statement Tuesday.
The basketball players said they were waiting for a bus in Rochester, N.Y., to take them to a scrimmage when police asked them to leave the area. When 17-year-old Deaquon Carelock and 16-year-olds Raliek Redd and Wan’Tauhjs Weathers pushed back against the officer’s request, saying they were following instructions from their coach, police arrested them. The teens were later charged with two counts of disorderly conduct.

As do-nothing Congress dithers, a million set to lose unemployment insurance
By Greg Sargent
December 3 at 12:31 pm
If Congress does nothing, and fails to extend a jobless-aid program, 1.3 million people will lose unemployment insurance only a few days after Christmas — perhaps leading to a series of stories about real people’s economic travails during the slow-news holiday season.
Meanwhile, Republicans are planning no fewer than four more House oversight hearings into Obamacare, even as observers are pronouncing this Congress the least productive in decades.
Democrats are hoping to turn that juxtaposition to their advantage.
I’m told House Dems will hold a hearing on Thursday into the plight of those set to lose unemployment insurance if Congress fails to extend the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, as part of an effort to pressure Republicans to agree to an extension. Sources tell me it will be presided over by Dem Reps. Nancy Pelosi, Chris Van Hollen, Sander Levin, and others, and will hear from witness who stand to lose those benefits.

Corruption worsens in world’s conflict areas, 2013 survey finds
By Carol J. Williams
December 3, 2013, 4:00 a.m.
Where there is trouble, opportunity for corruption inevitably follows.
Some of the world’s most tumultuous countries suffered setbacks this year in the fight against corruption, with civil war-torn Syria among the pack of nations increasingly at the mercy of bribe-takers and influence-peddlers, Transparency International reported Tuesday in its annual corruption survey.
Spain, Greece and Slovenia, where the turmoil has mostly been financial, also saw their good governance rankings slide in 2013.
Notable in the Corruption Perceptions Index 2013 was how little improvement was recorded in even the most open and law-abiding countries. Only two states — Denmark and New Zealand — scored in the top 10 percentiles on the 100-point index. The two countries at opposite ends of the world tied for first place with scores of 91, each up 1 point from 2012.
The bottom rung of this year’s index was stubbornly unreformed, with Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia each matching last year’s three-way tie for the most corrupt government with 8-point ratings.
Also unchanged from last year was the United States’ 19th-place ranking with a score of 73, as well as China’s showing in 80th place, though its score of 40 was a point higher than in 2012.

Health Law May Offer Part-Time Workers Better Options
By Michelle Andrews
Nov 26, 2013
In January, part-time workers who have so-called “mini-med” health insurance plans with very limited benefits and annual caps on payments will begin to lose that coverage, which under the health care overhaul can’t be renewed after the beginning of the year. Many experts say it’s just as well, noting that part-timers likely will have better options in January.
Mini-med plans, often favored by retailers and restaurants with large numbers of low wage and part-time workers, generally provide an extremely limited range of benefits, and total coverage may be capped at just a few thousand dollars a year.
After the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010, nearly all plans were required to eliminate lifetime and annual dollar limits on benefits. But some businesses that offered mini-med plans said that if they had to conform to the new rules, they would drop the plans, and their workers would lose what little protection they had. So some employers received waivers from the Department of Health and Human Services that permitted them to continue offering the limited plans temporarily. Starting in January, they can no longer offer plans that have annual benefit caps, although some large employers may still offer plans with limited benefits.
When Roberta Grindle was diagnosed with colon cancer in October, she blew through the $5,000 coverage limit on her mini-med plan almost immediately. Grindle, 62, worked 16 hours a week at a big box store near her home in Sebring, Fla., and paid $32 every two weeks for the store’s plan, the only coverage available to part-time workers.

Expert Testifies to Congress that Obama’s ‘Ignoring Laws’ Could Lead to Overthrow of Government
by Noah Rothman | 12:34 pm, December 3rd, 2013
During a congressional committee hearing about the constitutional limits imposed on the presidency and the implications of President Barack Obama’s disregard for implementing the Affordable Care Act as written, one expert testified that the consequences of the president’s behavior were potentially grave. He said that the precedent set by Obama could eventually lead to an armed revolt against the federal government.
On Tuesday, Michael Cannon, Cato Institute’s Director of Health Policy Studies, testified before a congressional committee about the dangers of the president’s legal behavior.
“There is one last thing to which the people can resort if the government does not respect the restrains that the constitution places on the government,” Cannon said. “Abraham Lincoln talked about our right to alter our government or our revolutionary right to overthrow it.”

Health Access: Full Exposure – Strong Coverage for a Strong Family
By Nina
Lancaster Family Healthcare Story
First, some background. I’m Jason, and I live with my wife, Sara, and daughter, Margaret. Sara and I are both 34 and non-smokers. Margaret is 2 and definitely a non-smoker.
Sara and I are also both self-employed small business owners.
While Margaret and I have no health issues, Sara has a pre-existing condition. In 2008, Sara was treated for a “mild” heart issue, specifically a super ventricular tachycardia (SVT). At the time, the procedure was recommended essentially because it “couldn’t hurt” to get this issue done. It was a simple, low-risk procedure and was completed in a few hours.
However, what the doctors didn’t tell us is that treatment for this problem (which was a problem in name only – Sara had no illness or issues) would make it impossible for her to obtain healthcare later in life.
Starting a Family When Sara and I decided to begin a family – and to purchase healthcare that included maternity coverage – Sara’s health applications were turned down due to her pre-existing heart condition. Since neither Sara or I had employer-sponsored health coverage, Sara was forced to join the Cover Colorado health plan in 2010. The monthly premium was significantly higher ($330 per month, as of November 2013) than the market rates at the time, and the annual deductible was substantial ($2000). I was able to purchase health insurance from Kaiser, but did so on an open enrollment plan with a cost of $220 per month. This plan has a 20% coinsurance and a $2500 annual deductible. When I added Margaret to my plan the cost increased from $220 to $660 per month. The coinsurance and annual deductible did not change. Thus, the total monthly healthcare costs for the Lancaster family was $1000 (technically, a few dollars over, as all the totals have been rounded). Colorado Health Exchange Using the new Colorado Health exchange, Sara, myself, and Margaret were quoted $590.65 per month for a family plan. The individual annual deductible is lower ($1,750 per person, $3,500 per family), there is 25% coinsurance, and it’s a “silver” plan (KP CO Silver), which seems like it should be an upgrade over existing policies. What’s more, the whole family will share the same policy. They can visit the same doctors (not all doctors would take Sara’s insurance via Cover Colorado), use the same online health record management system via KP.org, etc. –

A Whiter Shade of Envy
By MASHA GESSEN
In Russian, envy comes in two colors: black and white. The former is mean and resentful: “It should be me, not you.” The latter is aspirational: “I want to be you.” “Black envy” affirms a despondent world view; “white envy” affords a hopeful one.
For a week and a half, many Russians have had a clear case of white envy watching the protests in neighboring Ukraine. After President Viktor F. Yanukovich backed out of signing a political and trade agreement with the European Union, protests broke out in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities.
Many competing and contradictory political forces are involved, but the way it looks from Moscow the front line is drawn clearly: Ukraine has to choose between an increasingly reactionary Russia and Western Europe. Russia is using every kind of pressure — from threatening economic sanctions to declaring tens of thousands of Ukrainians persona non grata — all in order to drag Ukraine back into the Middle Ages with it. Western Europe, which has many demands of its own, promises a future of openness and progress.
Yanukovich, who has strong ties to the Kremlin, tried to have it both ways for a while, but he made his choice when it very nearly came time to sign the European treaty. Maybe he was afraid of ending up on Russia’s bad side, but maybe he was afraid of having to release his political rival Yulia V. Tymoshenko from jail in compliance with European demands. Whatever the motive, the decision sent Ukrainians into the streets, first by the thousands, then by the tens of thousands and later by the hundreds of thousands.

Edward Domain: My Affordable Care Act Enrollment Experience
On May 4th of this year, I was in a cab on a Saturday afternoon heading to the St. Louis Cinco de Mayo parade with two friends. My cab driver was texting and as a result rolled through a red light, we collided head-on with a van and I wound up in the hospital requiring 5 total surgeries and spent five and a half months in two hospitals and a nursing home. I have a new hip, will be in physical therapy for my shoulder for another year and without insurance I would have been doomed. My current bill for health insurance is $628.34/mo and only covers me.
This is insane. No one I know pays this much for health insurance, so when Healthcare.Gov was announced, I was cautiously optimistic- I had also gotten a letter from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois informing me my policy was being cancelled. After I chose my plan rated ‘gold’ here is my new bill for health insurance under Obamacare: I am saving $265.85/mo under Obamacare, for a total savings of $3,190.20/year This plan is far better than what I had before. My current plan has a deductible of $3,000 and has a $20 co-pay. Under Obamacare, my new plan has a $750 deductible and $30 co-pay for doctor’s visits.
For me, I’ll happily pay an extra $10 when I visit the doctor in return for a smaller copay for the important stuff. If you look, the most I’ll ever pay in one year is $6000- after that I am 100% covered for everything. If you look at my plan details, you’ll see that if I am in-network, after the deductible is covered ($750) then almost everything gets covered 100%. The biggest point for me is that my new plan under Obamacare is with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, the same company that my old plan was under. That means they were happily over-charging me for insurance and now, thanks to Obamacare, I have a better plan than I had before and I am paying less for it. Also of note- I did not qualify for subsidies- I am paying the full rate.

Poll: Young People Least Familiar WIth Obamacare
Catherine Thompson – December 3, 2013, 7:42 AM EST218
The “young invincibles” the Affordable Care Act relies on to offset the cost of insuring older Americans are less familiar with the law than their elders.
According to a Gallup poll released Monday, young Americans aged 18-9 are the group least familiar with the health care law. While 63 percent of respondents in that age group said they were familiar with the law, 37 percent said they were not familiar.
Those aged 50-64 are the group most familiar with the law, with 77 percent of respondents saying they are familiar with the law and 22 percent responding they were unfamiliar.
The poll found that overall familiarity with the Affordable Care Act is up only slightly from late summer and October. While a majority of uninsured young Americans believe it’s important to have health coverage, a report released in August found only one in four young Americans were aware of the health insurance exchanges.
The Department of Health and Human Services was touting the affordability of insurance for those younger customers, nearly half of whom the department said could secure coverage for $50 or less a month, in a push to enroll 2.7 million people aged 18-34 by 2014.

Christie Denies Allegations He Backpedaled On NJ DREAM Act
Catherine Thompson – December 3, 2013, 6:47 AM EST
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Monday denied accusations that he backpedaled his support for a bill that would grant in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants.
“I said the legislature should move in the lame duck session towards tuition equality in New Jersey. Period,” he said at a news conference, as quoted by ABC News. “That’s what I said. I didn’t support any particular piece of legislation. And I still support tuition equality.”
Christie’s remarks responded to an editorial published Sunday in the Newark Star-Ledger. The editorial accused the governor of supporting the legislation, known as the New Jersey DREAM Act, while he sought the Latino vote for his reelection bid — then dropping that position after he was elected to a second term as governor.
“The real reason for his flip-flop? Christie has his eyes on the presidency,” the editorial read. “And if he has to roll over Latinos to get there, he’ll do it.”
Christie said in a radio interview last week that he opposes the bill because it allows undocumented residents of other states to qualify for in-state tuition if they attend a New Jersey private school for at least three years, according to ABC News.

Among the GOP’s myriad criticisms of the Affordable Care Act, one of the loudest has centered around the law’s price tag. But according to one report, Obamacare won’t be as costly as expected.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that “the government is expected to spend billions of dollars less than originally projected on the law.”
The adjusted estimate is a result of the law’s Medicaid expansion and the subsidies for private insurance plans proving less costly than initially anticipated. According to the Times, economists say that the law has also benefitted from a weak economy over the last half-decade, during which time health spending has slowed dramatically.
It still remains unclear if Obamacare’s cost-control mechanisms will work effectively when the economy improves and health spending rises once again.
Roughly 100,000 people signed up for insurance last month using the troubled online federal health exchange HealthCare.gov.

We Can’t Just Play Defense on Voting Access. It’s Time to Make Voting Easier.
BY JEREMY BIRD
When I think of the 2012 Obama campaign, I am proud of so many things we accomplished. But one thing I wasn’t totally satisfied with was voter turnout.
It’s not that we didn’t meet our goals—we actually surpassed them, especially in key states. The numbers were stark: We won nine of the ten battleground states, registered 1.8 million new voters, and built a grassroots army of more than 2 million volunteers who made 146 million calls and door knocks over the course of the electoral cycle. Yet the really telling stats are the ones no one is discussing—specifically who failed to cast his or her vote in either this past election or any election in the last decade.
In 2012, 60 percent of eligible voters (129 million American citizens) headed to the polling booth, including the largest number of voters ever among African-Americans, Latinos, and Asian-Americans, and large numbers of women and young people—many of whom voted for the first time ever. But when 40 percent (86 million American citizen adults) are not voting, the simple fact is our society—and democracy writ large—suffers.

Texas cops handcuff and take 13-year-old white girl from black guardians
By David Edwards
Monday, December 2, 2013 14:56 EST
Houston Police have refused to explain why they took a 13-year-old white girl from her two black guardians over the weekend and placed her in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Landry Thompson’s mother had signed notarized papers giving dance instructor Emmanuel Hurd full guardianship over her during a trip from Oklahoma to Houston for training, according to KHOU.
Thompson, Hurd and another dance instructor had stopped at a gas station in Houston on Saturday night when they were surrounded by police cars.
Thompson is a 13-year-old blonde white girl and both dance instructors are young African-American men.
“We were on the GPS trying to figure out where the hotel was,” Hurd recalled. “They just pulled us out of the car and put our hands behind our backs like we were criminals.

The third season premieres today, Monday, December 2 and director-producer Angela Tucker says it’s “kind of a conversation piece to allow people to think a lot about some of the way that Black folk see one another.”
“Black Folk Don’t” is sure to spark spirited conversation particularly among African Americans who watch the series – intrigued by some of the African Americans featured doing things that they might think African Americans don’t do.

Private Prison Company Allegedly Put 73-Year-Old Grandmother In Solitary Confinement For 34 Days
By Aviva Shen on December 2, 2013 at 2:22 pm
Carol Lester, a 73-year-old grandmother serving time in New Mexico Women’s Correctional Facility in Grants, is suing Corrections Corporation of America, one of the largest private prison companies in the world, and Corizon, Inc, a private prison health care company, for denying her medical care and keeping her in solitary confinement for over a month.
Lester’s lawsuit, filed in late November, charges that the warden deliberately put her in solitary confinement because she complained to lawmakers and Department of Corrections officials that she and other women were being denied medical care.
Lester plead guilty to embezzling money from her employer to feed a gambling addiction in 2010. Soon after beginning her three-year sentence, the lawsuit charges that the privately run prison stopped giving her the prescribed medication she had been taking for thyroid cancer and gave her a new medication that made her sick. Lester started fainting on a regular basis, and medical staff told her she may have a serious heart condition. However, they did not send her to a specialist or a hospital, and her health deteriorated rapidly.
According to the complaint, she took up a letter writing campaign with fellow inmates who were also being denied medical care. Her letters prompted a delegation of state legislators and the head of health services for the Department of Corrections to visit the prison to talk with inmates about their concerns.

Sleepy Hollow Exclusive: Look Who’s Playing Ichabod’s Father (Hint: You’ll Approve)

Sleepy Hollow fans, prepare to have your wigs flipped.
The supernatural drama has cast… Alias spydaddy Victor Garber as Ichabod’s dad, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Details are sparse, but Garber will appear in at least one upcoming episode of the Fox series.
In the Nov. 25 episode, Ichabod spoke fondly of his father, reminiscing about spending time with him while the elder Crane was on holiday from teaching at Oxford.
