Cops: Hostage Taker Shot at Discovery Building

Cops have just announced … they have shot James Jay Lee — the man who took hostages at the Discovery Channel building in Maryland earlier today.
All of the hostages are safe and accounted for.
So far, cops say they have no information on the condition of the suspect.
Cops say one of the devices strapped to Lee exploded during the confrontation.
Lee is currently in police custody.
Cops say the building has not been deemed safe yet because there may be explosives in some of Lee’s backpacks.

Fox News continued its shallow attacks on President Obama’s speech on Iraq as Fox News’ Tucker Carlson complained that Obama was exploiting his family by putting their photos behind his desk.
During the “Great American Panel” segment on Hannity last night (8/31/10), Hannity not surprisingly said he was “not impressed” with Obama’s speech earlier that night.
Carlson said, “Everything about it was small. The run up was small. His spokesman attacked President Bush for the ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner, as if that hasn’t been hashed over… The presentation itself, I objected to the pictures of his kids in the background. I felt it was taking advantage of them and their images.”

Obama’s Oval Office speech was good, but the gravitas was great

President Obama’s Oval Office speech was good, but the iconography was great.
In his address marking the effective end of the Iraq War, Obama used the setting well. The flags behind him, the family pictures on either side, the flag pin in his lapel, the red tie, white shirt and blue suit… it all projected patriotism and authority.
One thing that worked in the speech was his drawing a straight line between the vast monetary cost of the war and the economic slough of despond in which we’re mired. One thing that didn’t work was his assertion that with the end of combat in Iraq, we were turning a page. We’re still at war, and Obama said that now more resources are available for Afghanistan.
Politicos will be universally dissatisfied. Liberals will say he gave George W. Bush too much credit; conservatives, not enough. But I think he did himself and his party some good tonight. He was generous enough to Bush, resolute in his intentions and obviously sincere in his praise of the troops. He wore the presidency with an accessory that Americans expect and appreciate: gravitas.

Is Mayor Bloomberg being wooed to join the Obama administration?
Asked about last weekend’s four-hour golf game with President Obama on Martha’s Vineyard, Bloomberg told reporters yesterday, “The economy was the main subject, other than discussing golf.”
Now there are whispers that the president went even further and sounded out Bloomberg about whether he would join his foundering economic team as treasury secretary, replacing prime blame-target Timothy Geithner.
“Obama needs Bloomberg more than Bloomberg needs Obama,” a source tells us. “Obama’s looking to do something bold and credible before the election.”

I agree that it’s time for the POTUS to bring someone in that can really get a grasp on the economy. He has lingered with Geithner and his krew too long. “Shovel ready” jobs was never going to benefit anyone but Hispanics and those illegals that are allowed to cross the Mexican border. That strategy has worried me the whole time. A timely announcement of someone like Bloomberg could possibly help keep the independent votes during the midterm elections. But to do nothing about jobs is political suicide. Hope its not too late to make some strategic changes that can bring hope to so many without it. I also hope that Bloomberg took the bit.
Pawlenty orders state agencies to decline “discretionary” federal health care cash

Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty Tuesday ordered all state agencies to not to submit applications to any health care funding from the federal government related to the health care overhaul.
Any applications must be either required by law or approved by the governor’s office.
Pawlenty, who appears to be gearing up for a run for president in 2012, has long decried the health care overhaul, which opponents call Obamacare, and has pledged to join a lawsuit to undo it.
“Obamacare is an intrusion by the federal government into personal health care matters and it’s an explosion of federal spending that does nothing to make health care more affordable,” Pawlenty said in a news release.
Here’s the executive order:
EXECUTIVE ORDER 10-12
DIRECTING STATE DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES
REGARDING DISCRETIONARY PARTICIPATION
IN THE FEDERAL HEALTH CARE LAW
I, TIM PAWLENTY, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and applicable laws do hereby issue this executive order:
WHEREAS, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“PPACA” or “the Act”) (Pub.L. 111-148) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010; and
WHEREAS, the Act represents a dramatic attempt to assert federal command and control over this country’s health care system, which accounts for one-sixth of our nation’s economy, thereby reducing individual freedom for health care decisions; and
WHEREAS, the Act includes unprecedented federal intrusions into individual liberty, including the mandate that individual citizens are compelled to purchase health insurance under penalty of law; and
WHEREAS, the Act was passed with massive new spending commitments at a time when the growing federal government debt threatens private sector economic growth; and
WHEREAS, the revenue to pay for the Act is based on increased taxes and fees coupled with unrealistic assumptions regarding purported future cost-savings; and
WHEREAS, this legislation includes a multitude of programs and demonstration projects intended to speed the transition to federally-controlled health care; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Laws of Minnesota 2010, 1st Special Session, Chapter 1 (Special Session Chapter 1) my Administration has determined Minnesota will not participate in the early expansion of the Medicaid entitlement program offered by the federal government as part of the legislation; and
WHEREAS, consistent with this determination and in recognition of my obligations to protect Minnesota’s sovereign interests and those of its citizens, the boundary between state and federal government must be maintained to prevent an unwise and unsustainable federal takeover of health care in our State.
NOW, THEREFORE, I hereby order that:
All executive branch departments and agencies are directed that no application shall be submitted to the federal government in connection with requests for grant funding for programs and demonstration projects deriving from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“PPACA” or “the Act”) (Pub.L. 111-148) unless otherwise required by law, or approved by the office of the Governor.
Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes 2009, section 4.035, subdivision 2, this Executive Order will be effective fifteen (15) days after publication in the State Register and filing with the Secretary of State and will remain in effect in accordance with Minnesota Statutes 2009, section 4.035, subdivision 3.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have set my hand this 31st day of August, 2010.

Koch Industries Applies For Federal Funds From Health Care Law It Opposes

Today, the Department of Health and Human Services announced the “first round of applicants accepted into the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program,” a $5 billion program established by the new health care law to help employers and states “maintain coverage for early retirees age 55 and older who are not yet eligible for Medicare.” According to the agency, “nearly 2,000 employers, representing large and small businesses, State and local governments, educational institutions, non-profits, and unions” applied and have been accepted into the program and “will begin to receive reimbursements for employee claims this fall.” Ironically, one of those employers is the oil, chemicals, and manufacturing conglomerate Koch Industries, which as Lee Fang has reported, has also spent millions of dollars opposing reform:
The contradictory practice of opposing the health care law while applying for its funding has been common among states. As the Wonk Room points out, 19 of the 22 states that are suing the federal government over health care reform have applied for the law’s rate review grants and at least 7 of those states also applied for the reinsurance dollars.
