Beck Admits Lying During Rally Speech

After being called on a white lie he told during his Restoring Honor rally, Glenn Beck admitted Thursday that he stretched the truth because he “thought it would be a little easier.”
Beck had claimed that he held George Washington’s handwritten first Inaugural Address in his hands at the National Archives, but a spokeswoman at the institution said he did no such thing. Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz and others called him out for the fabrication.
Thursday on his radio show, Beck copped to the lie. (RELATED: Lies By Prominent Americans.)

Anyone who is aware of all Internet traditions has by now seen the footage of Barney Frank taking down the Larouchie who asked him if he would support a “Nazi policy” by asking her, “On what planet do you spend most of your time?” But Rep. Frank was in rare form that night, standing up to the uninformed shrieking of the right and offering a real lesson in how to argue with conservatives. Rep. Frank’s office provided C&L with the tapes of that town hall meeting in Dartmouth from last week, and I put together a sort of greatest hits reel.
Frank explains what deficit hawks should concern themselves with:
“I am struck by those who say, well, you don’t care about the deficit. No, I do. I do care about the deficit. That’s one of the reasons, not the only one, why I voted against the single most wasteful expenditure in the history of America. The Iraq war. If we hadn’t gone to the war in Iraq, which I thought was a terrible mistake and voted against, we would have had more than enough money to pay for health care.”
He argues with a “tenther” who thinks that Congress isn’t authorized to provide health care for their citizens:

Unprecedented DOJ Suit Seeks Documents From Sheriff Joe Arpaio for Civil Rights Probe
A controversial Arizona sheriff who seemingly scores points with many of his constituents by acting as something of a law unto himself was sued today by the U.S. Department of Justice for failing to cooperate with an ongoing civil rights investigation.
The suit was virtually a foregone conclusion, notes the CNN Justice blog, after Sheriff Joe Arpaio, in a characteristically aggressive fashion, made his refusal to provide requested documents public in an open letter posted on Maricopa County’s website. The suit was filed in federal court in Phoenix.
The investigation concerns claims that the sheriff’s department has been conducting sweeps that violate the constitutional rights of immigrants.
However, Arpaio said he was surprised and disappointed by the suit and thought the document issue was close to resolution, reports the Arizona Republic.
He said his office doesn’t target Latino citizens due to their race and contended that the Justice Department wouldn’t need to sue him to get records if it had any racial profiling evidence.
Asked about the suit today as he appeared with state senator Russell Pearce at a press conference on another topic, Arpaio responded “They can sue me but, as Russell always says, ‘Take the handcuffs off the cops.’ ” And, Arpaio added, “I’m not going to be intimidated by the federal government going to court against us,” the newspaper recounts.
A DOJ spokeswoman said it has been 30 years since any police agency has refused to cooperate with a civil rights investigation, and the feds have never before had to sue in such a situation to force a police agency to provide access to relevant documents, according to the Republic.

Sharron Angle Claims Unemployment Insurance ‘Really Doesn’t Benefit Anyone’

In an interview this Wednesday, Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle heightened her criticisms of unemployment insurance, insisting that the benefits program to help the jobless ended up benefiting nobody.
Sitting down with conservative radio talk show host Heidi Harris, Angle once again addressed a topic that brought her a bit of political heat — including a hard-hitting ad from her opponent Harry Reid– not too long ago.
“People don’t want to be unemployed,” she explained. “They want to have real, full-time, permanent jobs with a future. That’s what they want, and we need to create that climate in Washington, D.C. that encourages businesses to create those full-time, permanent jobs with a future, and all [Rep.] Shelley Berkeley and [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid want to do is put a band-aid on this by extending unemployment, which really doesn’t benefit anyone. What happens is of course that your skills stagnate. You become demoralized yourself, you know, feeling that I can’t ever get a job, and these are not the solutions to the problem. We have real solutions, but they won’t look at the real solutions.”
OK, so buying food & keeping a roof over your head doesn’t benefit anyone?

For New Orleans, Katrina Recovery Means Remaking Police, Too

Five long years after the chaos of Hurricane Katrina unleashed the New Orleans Police Department’s guns on the city, ending in at least 10 unarmed civilians being shot, justice may finally be on its way.
The New Orleans Police Department is facing an unprecedented onslaught of reform initiatives, coming from both inside the department and out. On his second day in office, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu invited the Department of Justice to New Orleans to help overhaul the agency. “I have inherited a police force that has been described by many as one of the worst police departments in the country,” Landrieu wrote in a now-famous letter to Attorney General Eric Holder.
The department has a new chief, a new plan for change, and an impending agreement with the federal government for long-term monitoring. To date, 16 officers have been charged with federal criminal and civil violations for post-Katrina shootings. Their alleged crimes are serious; many face charges that make them eligible for the death penalty. The Justice Department has also charged two cops for an incident that took place a month before Katrina.
But even as the city appears to be getting serious about cleaning up its cops, questions remain. Amidst the hopeful promises and righteous anger of the past five years, can these grand ideas for reform be translated into real changes for citizens? If so, are they sustainable? Will the federal prosecutions actually end in cops being held accountable for their actions? And for those watching around the nation, if the country’s most infamously corrupt police force can be cleaned up and its community relations repaired, are there lessons for police accountability in cities elsewhere?

Angle Spokesperson Denies She Wanted To Withhold Aid From Katrina Victims

Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle is clarifying — but not backing down from — comments she made questioning the timing and composition of the aid package Congress passed five years ago for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
In a statement to the Huffington Post, Angle’s spokesman, Jarrod Agen stressed that Angle had not, in fact, argued that, “Katrina victims should not receive aid.” Rather “unlike Harry Reid, Sharron would want to know where tax dollars are going and who is spending it before voting in favor of any spending bill,” Agen said.
The clarification comes after Angle has absorbed more than a few blows for offering what appeared to be an argument against the expedited passage of a $62 billion aid package for Katrina victims back in 2005.
You have to be a most despicable person to wanna withhold aid from helpless victims who has suffered monumental tragedy. God help your soul, Sharon Angle!

This could make for awkward chatter at the White House: Even before the 2010 midterms are over, a Chicago dentist has started the 2012 ad race with a spot that supports Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for president.
The $5,000 ad began running on television in New Orleans on Wednesday, CNN reports, and it will soon run in Washington, New York and Los Angeles, and possibly Houston, said William DeJean.

Author Hawking says God not needed for creation

British physicist and mathematician Stephen Hawking says no, arguing in his new book that there need not be a God behind the creation of the universe.
The concept is explored in “The Grand Design,” excerpts of which were printed in the British newspaper The Times on Thursday. The book, written with fellow physicist Leonard Mlodinow, is scheduled to be published by Bantam Press on Sept. 9.
“The Grand Design,” which the publishers call Hawking’s first major work in nearly a decade, challenges Isaac Newton’s theory God must have been involved in creation because our solar system couldn’t have come out of chaos simply through nature.

Though many students are liberals on social issues, the economic reality of a weak job market has taken a toll on their loyalties: far fewer 18- to 29-year-olds now identify themselves as Democrats compared with 2008.
“Is the recession, which is hitting young people very hard, doing lasting or permanent damage to what looked like a good Democratic advantage with this age group?” asked Scott Keeter, the director of survey research at the Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan group. “The jury is still out.”

BP is warning Congress that if lawmakers pass legislation that bars the company from getting new offshore drilling permits, it may not have the money to pay for all the damages caused by its oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The company says a ban would also imperil the ambitious Gulf Coast restoration efforts that officials want the company to voluntarily support.
BP executives insist that they have not backed away from their commitment to the White House to set aside $20 billion in an escrow fund over the next four years to pay damage claims and government penalties stemming from the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. The explosion killed 11 workers and spewed millions of barrels of oil into the gulf.
