Janet Damita Jo Jackson (born May 16, 1966) is an American recording artist and actress. Born in Gary, Indiana, and raised in Encino, Los Angeles, she is the youngest child of the Jackson family of musicians. She first performed on stage with her family at the age of seven, and started her career as an actress with the variety television series The Jacksons in 1976. She went on to appear in other television shows throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, including Good Times and Fame.

At age sixteen in 1982, she signed a recording contract with A&M, releasing her self-titled debut album the same year. She faced criticism for her limited vocal range, and for being yet another member of the Jackson family to become a recording artist. Beginning with her third studio album Control (1986), she began a long-term collaboration with record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Her music with Jam and Lewis incorporated elements of rhythm and blues, disco, funk, and rap with sample loop, triplet swing and industrial beats, which led to crossover appeal in popular music. In addition to receiving recognition for the innovation in her albums, choreography, music videos, and prominence on MTV, Jackson was acknowledged as a role model for her socially conscious lyrics.

  1. Roman Conaway Arrested: Accused Of Threatening President Obama, Local Muslims

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/22/roman-conaway-arrested-ac_n_735707.html

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — An Army veteran arrested after a seven-hour standoff was charged Wednesday with threatening to kill President Barack Obama as part of what authorities said was his plan to ignite a war between Muslims and Christians and “start an apocalypse.”

Federal agents arrested Roman Otto Conaway, 50, when he surrendered early Wednesday at his home after the confrontation, in which he insisted a bulky belt he wore and three storage containers on his Fairview Heights property were packed with explosives.

The FBI and the criminal complaint say the belt turned out to carry only inert putty-like material – similar to children’s molding clay – made to look like high-grade explosives, with wires attached to a curling iron Conaway claimed was a triggering device. Nothing dangerous was found in the storage drums.

Crazy as hell! He could have gotten bown to smithereens for fake ass shyt!

Michele Norris On Race, And ‘The Grace Of Silence’

Michele Norris, co-host of NPR’s All Things Considered, can still picture her father vividly: Belvin Norris Jr. walked a little unevenly, with a touch of syncopation. She never thought much of the very slight limp until 2008 — long after her father’s death — when her uncle made a shocking, off-hand comment.

“I was having breakfast with my Uncle Joe,” Norris tells her NPR colleague, Steve Inskeep. “He was on this rant about how young people have it easy, and they don’t know what other people have sacrificed for them.” Between spoonfuls of oatmeal, Uncle Joe said matter-of-factly: “Well, you know your dad was shot.”

Norris had no idea; her father had never told her. The revelation drove her to launch an investigation into her family’s history — and their place in the larger, painful history of race in America — stories which she tells in her new memoir, The Grace Of Silence.

Bob Woodward Potrayal of Obama Pleases White House

The new Bob Woodward book portrays President Obama as hard-nosed and demanding in the process of drafting a new U.S. military strategy in Afghanistan last year. And senior White House officials seem pleased by the portrait.

“I think the book portrays a thoughtful, vigorous policy process that led us to a strategy to get us the best chance of achieving our objectives and goals in Afghanistan,” said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

In an exchange with reporters on Air Force One as Mr. Obama flew to New York for two-and-a-half days of diplomacy at the United Nations, Gibbs said he hopes people read the book for themselves, as he said he did last night.

Gibbs said Mr. Obama came into office facing an Afghanistan policy that was “neglected for seven years and badly under-resourced.” Gibbs said the president tried to shepherd a process “that was thoughtful and deliberative.”

In drafting the Afghanistan strategy that Mr. Obama unveiled in an address to the nation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on December 1, 2009, Gibbs says Mr. Obama felt strongly it was in the national interest that the U.S. not become involved in something in Afghanistan “that was unlimited or open-ended.”

Bob Woodward book details Obama battles with advisers over exit plan for Afghan war
    By Steve Luxenberg
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Wednesday, September 22, 2010; 12:11 AM

President Obama urgently looked for a way out of the war in Afghanistan last year, repeatedly pressing his top military advisers for an exit plan that they never gave him, according to secret meeting notes and documents cited in a new book by journalist Bob Woodward.
Frustrated with his military commanders for consistently offering only options that required significantly more troops, Obama finally crafted his own strategy, dictating a classified six-page “terms sheet” that sought to limit U.S. involvement, Woodward reports in “Obama’s Wars,” to be released on Monday.
According to Woodward’s meeting-by-meeting, memo-by-memo account of the 2009 Afghan strategy review, the president avoided talk of victory as he described his objectives.
“This needs to be a plan about how we’re going to hand it off and get out of Afghanistan,” Obama is quoted as telling White House aides as he laid out his reasons for adding 30,000 troops in a short-term escalation. “Everything we’re doing has to be focused on how we’re going to get to the point where we can reduce our footprint. It’s in our national security interest. There cannot be any wiggle room.”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Saying that he was a “deceiver and liar” who had given in to his dark side, the Rev. Ted Haggard confessed to sexual immorality Sunday in a letter read from the pulpit of the megachurch he founded.

The disgraced former president of the National Evangelical Association, which represents 30 million evangelical Christians, apologized and said “because of pride, I began deceiving those I love the most because I didn’t want to hurt or disappoint them.”

“The fact is I am guilty of sexual immorality. And I take responsibility for the entire problem. I am a deceiver and a liar. There’s a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I have been warring against it for all of my adult life,” he said.

Ally Financial legal issue with foreclosures may affect other mortgage companies

    By Ariana Eunjung Cha
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Wednesday, September 22, 2010; 5:37 AM

Some of the nation’s largest mortgage companies used a single document processor who said he signed off on foreclosures without having read the paperwork – an admission that may open the door for homeowners across the country to challenge foreclosure proceedings.

The legal predicament compelled Ally Financial, the nation’s fourth-largest home lender, to halt evictions of homeowners in 23 states this week. Now it appears hundreds of other companies, including mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, may also be affected because they use Ally to service their loans.

As head of Ally’s foreclosure document processing team, 41-year-old Jeffrey Stephan was required to review cases to make sure the proceedings were legally justified and the information was accurate. He was also required to sign the documents in the presence of a notary.

In a sworn deposition, he testified that he did neither.

Ohio Democrat Chair Fires ‘F-Word’ At Tea Party
Chris Redfern Makes Emotional Speech Before Steel Wor Posted: 11:38 pm EDT September 21, 2010Updated: 9:51 am EDT September 22, 2010

CLARINGTON, Ohio — In the midst of a heated general election cycle, Ohio’s Democratic Party chairman is admitting he used some “colorful language” during a political event in Monroe County Monday night.
As the United Steelworkers union was announcing its endorsement for a number of Ohio Democrats, including Gov. Ted Strickland, Chris Redfern used a variation of the F-word to describe opponents to his party’s agenda.
A NEWS9 reporting crew was invited into the union hall in Clarington for the endorsement announcement, and the camera was rolling as Redfern leveled the expletive at critics in the Tea Party, who, in his words, believe health care is a privilege, not a right.
“If your kids are going to graduate from college, now he or she gets health care, your heath care, while he or she looks for a new job,” Redfern said. “It’s in the very base terms we win these arguments. Every time one of these (expletive deleted) says, excuse my language…”

So, so, now do you think Long is denying the allegations because: (1) he’s scared, which has been the issue all of his life; (2) he doesnt want to loose his paycheck supported by 25k peeps; (3) dissapointing the loyal following; (4) all of the above.

He has had to carry a heavy burden all of these years if these allegations are true. I betcha more skeletons will start falling out of the closet now. He has tried for so long to keep a lock on it, now a few bones have started busting out.

  17. AB.com Guest Post: What’s Up With Eddie Long?!?

    http://www.averagebro.com/

[Very Long Editor’s Note: When allegations of sexual impropriety by Atlanta-area megachurch pastor Bishop Eddie Long hit the streets (aka: Black Folks’ Twitter) last night, the reaction divided into two camps. There were those (like me) who think this is an extortion attempt by a couple of shady characters to defame a very rich man. And then there were those who automatically assumed Long’s guilt, and launched into a tasteless (but still funny) series of #EddieLongSaid tweets which made the pastor a trending topic. As someone very familiar with the Atlanta church scene, my friend The Uppity Negro is uniquely qualified to give his opinion on the topic. Show our guest some love you-know-where.]

Hot off the press from tonight, the latest in news to affect the institutional Black Church, both old and new, has been the lawsuit against Bishop Eddie Long of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church of Lithonia, Georgia.
The prominent pastor of a 25,000-member megachurch outside Atlanta denies allegations in a lawsuit that he coerced two young men from the congregation into a sexual relationship, his attorney said. Lawyers for the men, now 20 and 21, say they filed the lawsuit Tuesday in DeKalb County Court against Bishop Eddie Long.

The men who filed the suit were 17- and 18-year-old members of the church when they say Long abused his spiritual authority to seduce them with cars, money, clothes, jewelry, international trips and access to celebrities. B.J. Bernstein, an attorney representing the plaintiffs, said that when the relationships started, the plaintiffs were past the legal age of consent in Georgia, which is 16.

    • Vettte says:

Sad. Sad. I think about all of the many among his 25k congregation who really feel he could do no wrong. It hurts me to think how I would feel if someone told me that my pastor was on the down low. The preach “best principles” that people should live by, I mean preach it. Then when their human frailties show up and show out its disheartening. That’s why I try not to get toooo close to preachers, even the ones that I have worked for in the past, because you realize that the flesh is weak.

Now this is coming out, a pediphile preacher! Move over Catholic church.

      • If the allegations are true, I hope the Church can hold it together. I’ve been through the break up of a church and the pain is incredible.

      • Ametia says:

This unfortunately happens in every religion and church. Sexual repression is so spiritually unhealthy.

How the HELL do folks think they got here, by emmaculate conception? Sexual energy is creative energy. It is the stuff of life. It’s all in how it is channeled.

    • Ametia says:

KARMA COMES A KNOCKIN’ AFTER FOLKS BEEN A ROCKIN’!

      • Vettte says:

Is he sexually repressed or greedy?

Is variety the spice of life?

      • Vettte says:

I wonder how is wife feels about the manner in which he has allegedly channeled his sexual energy? And do his kids really understand?

      • I wonder how is wife feels about the manner in which he has allegedly channeled his sexual energy? And do his kids really understand?

If true…divorce him. The marriage vow would be broken. The scripture gives the injured party an out. You are not held in bondage in such cases.

      • Ametia says:

In response to Vette, it’s all of the above. Sexual energy is good. The challenge comes with the folks who direct it. they don’t have the consciousness to work it. The ethics, morals, intentions, the responsibility that comes with moving it are sullied by humans.

Just wanted to be clear about this. SEXUAL ENERGY IS GOOD!

      • Ametia says:

Every thought, word, deed or act, is paid for in service, coin or pain, without exception. Karma is not a man made law. It is a universal spiritual law.

    Democrats Flee as Obama Speaks
    By Hal Scherz

As President Obama delivers yet another speech on his healthcare debacle-this one on the 6 month anniversary of the bill’s passage- he may notice some of the people who won’t be clapping: members of his own party. Like aristocrats aboard a sinking steamship, Congressional Democrats are madly scrambling for whatever life vests they can find.

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, one of the architects of the healthcare insurance mandates, has voiced second thoughts, saying “I would like to explore the possibility of Oregon moving forward with a federal waiver (on mandates)” Another Democrat, Mississippi Congressman Gene Taylor, has broken ranks and joined with 171 Republicans in signing petition #11 which calls for a vote to repeal Obamacare.

How long until anonymous skittish Dems run to the media to grouse that talking about health reform at all is going to destroy their hopes in the midterms?

The Obama events today include the unveiling of a new Web site designed to educate voters on the law and a visit by Obama to a private home in Virginia, where he will meet with a chronically ill individual and discuss the law’s benefits.

  22. D.C. School Reform In Question After Mayor Fenty’s Loss

    http://colorlines.com/archives/2010/09/dc_school_reform_in_question_after_mayor_fentys_loss.html

When Washington, D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty lost his primary in a major upset against city council chairman Vincent Gray on Tuesday night, the immediate question for many was not what would happen to the young black mayor once hailed as a Democratic party rising star. It was: what will happen to his hard-charging school chief Michelle Rhee?

Since Tuesday, Gray has repeatedly ducked the question, saying he will not comment on personnel issues until after the November election. Gray and Rhee have clashed over the years, and the local teachers’ union backed Gray, who noted during his campaign that he’s interested in working “with parents and teachers,” a group of folks that Rhee has been at odds with in her short tenure. Rhee, for her part, has had to tamp down rumors that she’s already stepped down, though she acknowledged Wednesday evening that she “absolutely” felt guilty for Fenty’s loss. She also has made it clear Wednesday night that she’s uninterested in compromising her reform agenda for a new mayor.

The question for the rest of the country is: where aggressive, pro-testing and pro-teacher accountability school reforms are concerned, how much are parents and teachers willing to handle?
