The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is directed by Carol Cymbala, the wife of Senior Pastor Jim Cymbala and the daughter of the church founder, the late Rev. Clair Hutchins. Although the Choir is composed of vocally untrained church members, it has been used by the Lord to present the love of God all over the world. The 285-voice choir has recorded three videos, three DVDs, and numerous albums, winning six Grammy Awards. “The choir represents all different walks of life and every kind of sin,” Pastor Cymbala says. “You name it and we have someone who has been saved out of it, standing next to another one who has grown up in the church.”
In the early 1980’s, Carol Cymbala decided to “make a little tape for the church,” and when she had trouble finding enough appropriate songs, she began writing them. Although she cannot read or write music, the Lord has given her a special gift to direct and create from the heart through the power of the Holy Spirit. After 25 years of recording and live performances, the Lord continues to use the Choir to carry the message of the Gospel around the world.

Michael Steele is in talks with both CNN and Fox News about a potential job as a paid contributor, the New York Post reports.
The much-maligned former head of the Republican National Committee apparently hinted that some kind of deal was in the works, telling the conservative FrumForum site that he would be “doing some TV here.”
Fox News would only say that it was talking to several people about a contributor role; CNN declined to comment.

The Root: Twitter Trends Paint The Wrong Picture

African Americans reportedly make up 25 percent of Twitter users, but the trending topics on any given day reflect hateful, stereotypical and misogynistic messages. Are we using our large social networking presence to do more harm than good?
Here’s an interesting fact about Twitter: Black people love it. According to a study by Edison Research, we make up 25 percent of the 17 million (and counting) people who use the social networking site. And here’s something else about black people and Twitter: We love to start trends — trending topics, that is.
Twitter defines trending topics as the “new or newsworthy topics that are occupying the most people’s attention on Twitter at any one time.” Adding a hashtag (#) to a tweet creates a themed, grouped message. If enough people tweet the same hashtag, it’s considered a trending topic.
With African Americans disproportionately represented in the Twitter game, trending topics often originate with and are perpetuated by black folks. According to Edison Research, “many of the ‘trending topics’ on Twitter on a typical day are reflective of African-American culture, memes and topics.” Though many trending topics are about specific people, events or silliness like #liesmentell, #itsnotcheating, etc., the mood has recently shifted into far more ignorant territory. Why is this how we choose to wield our power on Twitter?

Race has always loomed large for the scrappy South Side native—larger than we knew, in fact, according to her new memoir News Lady. Simpson reveals a slew of race-related battles with ABC News, including her account that she was pushed out the door after a 25-year career.

CHICAGO — Decades after young black men in Chicago first began claiming that a white policeman shocked, burned and suffocated them to get confessions, former officer Jon Burge is headed to federal prison.
He goes to serve to 4 1/2 years behind bars not as the decorated, tough detective who rose quickly in the department, but as a cancer patient with a drinking problem who is, by his own admission, broken. His name has become synonymous with out-of-control police in the country’s third-largest city.
U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow sentenced Burge on Friday, bringing an end to an ugly chapter in the city’s racially charged history after he was convicted last summer of lying about the torture of suspects.
Dozens of people – almost all of them black men – claimed for decades that Burge and his officers tortured them into confessing to crimes ranging from armed robbery to murder.
While Burge’s attorneys had asked for a lesser sentence, several victims and their supporters said Burge’s punishment wasn’t nearly harsh enough.
“It’s outrageous,” said Mark Clements, who claims Burge’s officers tortured him into giving a false confession in 1981 when he was 16. Tears ran down his face and his voice rose in anger. “It’s not justice.”

Obama Address to Focus on Jobs, Cutting Deficit, Unity

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will appeal to the nation for political unity in his State of the Union address Tuesday night as he turns his attention to the tasks of job creation and deficit reduction.
In a videotaped message emailed to Democratic organizers, Mr. Obama laid out the main themes of his address, which will be delivered to a Republican-controlled House and a Democratic Senate struggling for comity. He said he would focus mainly on national competitiveness, economic growth and job creation.
Mr. Obama will also talk up what he will call “responsible” deficit reduction, according to a transcript of the video address to volunteers for Organizing for America, his grass-roots political organization. Republicans have said deep and immediate deficit reduction needed to shore up the nation’s finances and foster economic growth.
With a fight brewing over the federal budget, and Republicans pushing to repeal the Democratic-sponsored health care overhaul, the president will appeal for civility and unity.

The Obama administration has become so concerned about the slowing pace of new drugs coming out of the pharmaceutical industry that officials have decided to start a billion-dollar government drug development center to help create medicines
The new effort comes as many large drug makers, unable to find enough new drugs, are paring back research. Promising discoveries in illnesses like depression and Parkinson’s that once would have led to clinical trials are instead going unexplored because companies have neither the will nor the resources to undertake the effort.
