The O’Jays are a Canton, Ohio based soul and R&B group, originally consisting of Eddie Levert (b. June 16, 1942), Walter Williams (born August 25, 1942), William Powell (January 20, 1942–May 26, 1977), Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. The O’Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. The O’Jays had their first hit with “Lonely Drifter”, in 1963. In spite of the record’s success, the group was considering quitting the music business until Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters, took an interest in the group. With Gamble & Huff, the O’Jays (now a trio after the departure of Isles and Massey) emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with “Back Stabbers” (1972), a pop hit, and topped the U.S. singles charts the following year with “Love Train“.

Suspect arrested in East Coast rapes
By Washington Post editors
A man believed to be the “East Coast Rapist” has been arrested in Connecticut, authorities saud. (A MAN? WELL WE KNOW IT’S A MAN.)

WASHINGTON — Putting a formal end to attempts to satisfy his concerns with the project, Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) has rejected a last-ditch effort by the Department of Transportation to build a portion of a national high-speed rail system in his state. Scott had what an official described as a “not long” phone conversation with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Friday morning, informing LaHood that he would continue to refuse $2.4 billion in federal funds for the project. The money will likely now be available to other states. LaHood met with Scott earlier…

Breaking News Alert: Loughner charged in new 49-count federal indictment
March 4, 2011 2:09:18 PM
—————————————-
A federal grand jury in Arizona has indicted accused Tucson gunman Jared Lee Loughner on 49 counts in the January rampage that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 12 others and left six dead, including a chief federal district judge.
Employing a novel legal argument, the indictment adds 46 federal counts to the three he already faced, on the theory that the crime at the Safeway where Giffords was meeting with constituents occurred on protected federal ground, as if it happened inside Congress.

Are whites racially oppressed?
By John Blake,CNN
March 4, 2011 — Updated 1401 GMT (2201 HKT)
CNN) — They marched on Washington to reclaim civil rights.
They complained of voter intimidation at the polls.
They called for ethnic studies programs to promote racial pride.
They are, some say, the new face of racial oppression in this nation — and their faces are white.
“We went from being a privileged group to all of a sudden becoming whites, the new victims,” says Charles Gallagher, a sociologist at La Salle University in Pennsylvania who researches white racial attitudes and was baffled to find that whites see themselves as a minority.
“You have this perception out there that whites are no longer in control or the majority. Whites are the new minority group.”
Call it racial jujitsu: A growing number of white Americans are acting like a racially oppressed majority. They are adopting the language and protest tactics of an embattled minority group, scholars and commentators say.
They point to these signs of racial anxiety:
• A recent Public Religion Research Institute poll found 44% of Americans surveyed identify discrimination against whites as being just as big as bigotry aimed at blacks and other minorities. The poll found 61% of those identifying with the Tea Party held that view, as did 56% of Republicans and 57% of white evangelicals.
• More colleges are offering courses in “Whiteness Studies” as white Americans cope with becoming what one commentator calls a “dispossessed majority group.”
• A Texas group recently formed the “Former Majority Association for Equality” to offer college scholarships to needy white men. Colby Bohannan, the group’s president, says white men don’t have scholarship options available to minorities. “White males are definitely not a majority” anymore, he says.
• U.S. Census Bureau projections that whites will become a minority by 2050 are fueling fears that whiteness no longer represents the norm. This fear has been compounded by the recent recession, which hit whites hard.
THIS: You have this perception out there that whites are no longer in control or the majority. –Charles Gallagher, sociologist

No glory for governors trying to do the right fiscal thing
By E.J. Dionne Jr.
Thursday, March 3, 2011
If you want to get national attention as a governor these days, don’t try to be innovative about solving the problems you were elected to deal with – in education, transportation and health care. No, if you want ink and television time, just cut and cut and cut some more.
Almost no one in the national media is noticing governors who say the reasonable thing: that state budget deficits, caused largely by drops in revenue in the economic downturn, can’t be solved by cuts or tax increases alone.
There is nothing courageous about an ideological governor hacking away at programs that partisans of his philosophy, including campaign contributors, want eliminated. That’s staying in your comfort zone.
The brave ones are governors such as Jerry Brown in California, Dan Malloy in Connecticut, Pat Quinn in Illinois, Mark Dayton in Minnesota and Neil Abercrombie in Hawaii. They are declaring that you have to cut programs, even when your own side likes them, and raise taxes, which nobody likes much at all. Rhode Island’s Lincoln Chafee has warned of possible tax increases too.
Indeed, to the extent that Quinn received any national press coverage, he got pilloried in conservative outlets in January when he signed tax hikes that included a temporary increase in Illinois’ individual income tax rate from 3 percent to 5 percent.
Despite all the commotion around whether the federal government will shut down, the clamor in the states may be even more important than what’s happening in Washington, which is missing in action on the moment’s most vital fiscal question.
What states are doing to ease their fiscal agonies will only slow down our fragile economic recovery, and may stop it altogether. The last thing we need right now are state and local governments draining jobs and money from the economy, yet that is what they are being forced to do.
As the last three monthly reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed, an economy that created a net 317,000 private-sector jobs lost 70,000 state and local government jobs. Cutbacks are dead weight on the recovery.
In a more rational political climate, President Obama would have resurrected the lovely old Republican idea of federal revenue sharing. Washington should have continued replenishing state budgets for two more years, until we were certain the economic storms had passed. Instead, anything that might be called “stimulus” – “S” is now a scarlet letter in politics – was rejected out of hand.
The federal government could also help the states by picking up more of their Medicaid costs. In the long run, health-care spending should be a responsibility of the national government – as it is in almost every other wealthy democracy. A national commitment would end the specter of states forcing already financially beleaguered citizens off the health insurance rolls.
Such ideas are off the table because the current rage is not for figuring out how to make government work better – a cause that once united governors of both parties – but for cutting back even its most basic and popular functions.
Consider the new budget Gov. Scott Walker announced in Wisconsin on Tuesday. Among other things, he proposed cutting state aid to schools by $834 million over the next two years, a 7.9 percent reduction.

Courtney Love to Pay $430,000 to Settle Twitter Defamation Case
(Exclusive)March 3
4:48 PM 3/3/2011 by Matthew Belloni
Rocker Courtney Love has settled the lawsuit brought against her by a fashion designer who claims she was defamed in a series of messages posted on Twitter. The settlement with Dawn Simorangkir (aka the “Boudior Queen”), which sources say is being finalized today and will be announced next week, will cost Love about $430,000. The first payment of cash is due today, followed by a series of payments to Simorangkir stretched out until 2014.
The settlement ends a case that was watched as closely for the unique legal issues in play as the often-erratic behavior of the defendant. Simorangkir, who became embroiled in a dispute with Love over a $4000 payment for clothing, accused the Hole frontwoman of ruining her business with a series of allegedly defamatory tweets posted during a 20 minute rant in 2009. The trial, which was originally scheduled for late January but was postponed when the parties began talking settlement, would have been the first high-profile courtroom showdown over what constitutes defamation on Twitter.

China plans to track cellphone users, sparking human rights concerns
By Cecilia Kang
China said it may begin tracking cellphone users in Beijing through location technology it hopes will help city authorities better manage traffic. But the announcement also sparked fresh concerns that the government may be using mobile technology to surveil its residents.
In an announcement, made through Beijing’s Municipal People’s Government Web site, the Chinese government said it would track 17 million cellphone users in Beijing through location technology to “publish real-time dynamic information to ease congestion and improve the efficiency of public travel.”
Beijing is notorious for its traffic congestion. Last August, a 60-mile jam into the capital city lasted nine days. The Chinese government is also notorious for its firm grip on the flow of information in and out of the country. Authorities have tapped into e-mail accounts of foreign journalists and Democracy activists and censored certain Web sites in the nation.
“What happens when you start tracking cellphone users is that you maintain a constant history of what users are doing, their habits, who they associate with,” said Joshua Gruenspecht, a cyber security fellow at the U.S.-based Center for Democracy and Technology.
“The government can then use that history against people and for human rights reasons, that can be very politically disturbing,” he said.
In Beijing, 70 percent of residents have a cellphone run by China Mobile. In a statement, Li Guoguang, China’s Science and Technology Commission Deputy Director of Social Development, said they could determine the location of users by the connection of a cellphone antenna to one of the multitude of base stations across the city. He said the country is still weighing the service and how to build a platform to collect and deliver information.
Gruenspecht said any government or cellphone company can track its users. By simply connecting to a cell tower or through other location-based services such as global positioning systems, a mobile user’s whereabouts can be pinpointed even to a city block.
But the announcement by the Chinese government is the first he has heard of a nation using location services to comprehensively track its users. And the announcement comes amid heightened awareness over the use of mobile devices and Internet communications sites such as Facebook and Twitter to organize and fuel civil protests against the governments of Egypt, Tunisia and Libya.
But those technologies have also served to harm activists and protestors, some civil rights groups say. Facebook’s real name policy puts people at risk for retaliation by governments, some say.
In a statement, Nizar Zakka, the Secretary General of IJMA3, the Arab communications technology regulatory group, urged social media companies to develop protective measures for social media users:
“Social media had demonstrated its potential, on the streets of Tehran, Cairo and elsewhere, to serve as an agent for change and virtuous development,” Zakka said, according to reports. “However, as its power becomes more apparent, the desire of governments to use this very tool of free expression to suppress dissent increases accordingly. These days, social media is also being used in order to monitor, track, and ultimately muzzle the very activists whose activities it most supports.”

The boy who claims he went to Heaven… and met dead sister his parents never told him aboutBy Richard Hartley-parkinson
Last updated at 3:58 PM on 2nd March 2011
‘She told me she was glad to have someone from her family up there’
A boy who almost died from a ruptured appendix has said he met the dead sister he did not know existed.
The extraordinary claims by Colton Burpo, aged four, came after he was misdiagnosed with flu while his family, from Imperial, Nebraska, were on a trip to Colorado. By the time they returned home he was seriously ill and had to undergo emergency surgery twice.
While he was in the operating theatre his parents, Todd and Sonya, prayed, believing they were going to lose their son.
However, Colton soon recovered and then told his astonished parents that he had met the sister his mother had miscarried a year before his own birth.
What made this even more remarkable was his parents had never spoken to him about her.

Sex 101: Northwestern Class Watches Live Orgasm
Human sexuality class gets live demonstration
Class presentations don’t get much more unconventional: last week Northwestern psychology professor John Bailey held an optional after-class demonstration in which a naked woman had an orgasm live onstage, as a man identified as her fiance used a sex toy known as a “fucksaw” on her. The girl was not a student, according to the Daily Beast. The sex act was the climax (no pun intended) of a talk by guest lecturer Ken Melvoin-Berg, who offers sex tours of Chicago.
“Both Professor Bailey and myself gave them five or six warnings about what was about to happen,” Melvoin-Berg tells the Chicago Tribune. Some students left, but about 100 stayed as a naked woman came onstage and explained that she had a fetish for being watched by large crowds. The event has created a bit of a stir, but the school has issued a statement standing behind Bailey, and the professor is unrepentant. “Sticks and stones may break your bones,” he reportedly told another class this week, “but watching naked people on stage doing pleasurable things will never hurt you.”

Barack Obama reelection starts cash chase
By GLENN THRUSH
3/4/11 6:56 AM EST
President Barack Obama’s 2012 fundraising team has begun nailing down major cash commitments from top donors during a coast-to-coast “listening” tour — the surest sign to date that the vaunted Obama money machine is back in business.
Former White House deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, along with Hollywood producer-turned-Democratic fundraiser Rufus Gifford, has been aggressively recruiting big-money contributors who maxed out to the 2008 campaigns of Obama and Hillary Clinton, donors and party officials told POLITICO.
Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0311/50643.html#ixzz1FdcmBkQV
One of their pitches: an offer to join a new “National Finance Council,” which would entail a contribution to the Democratic National Committee of up to $61,600 per couple, per year. That money could be used to fund support operations for Obama’s reelection effort, in addition to smaller donations they would be expected to make directly to Obama’s as-yet-unincorporated Chicago-based campaign, according to donors.
The decision to ask for the DNC’s $61,600 up front, while hardly unprecedented, has taken some Democratic fundraisers by surprise. In part, that’s because it comes so early in the cycle — before any clear GOP frontrunner has emerged.
But that kind of commitment from wealthy donors could crowd out the party’s cash-hungry congressional committees, which are desperately competing for 2012 contributions, often from the same source.
Under current federal campaign finance limits, individuals can contribute a total of about $71,000 to committees, campaigns and PACs — leaving donors with $10,000 or less in post-Obama discretionary income.

U.S. adds 192,000 jobs in February
By Greg Robb WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Job growth accelerated in February and the unemployment rate fell for the third straight month, the Labor Department said Friday. Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 192,000 in February. This was slightly lower than the 218,000 gain expected by Wall Street economists. The unemployment rate ticked lower to 8.9% in February from 9.0% in the previous month. Economists forecast the unemployment rate to rise to 9.1%. Job growth in December and January was revised higher by 58,000 jobs. Average hourly earnings held steady at $22.87. Earnings are up 1.7% in the past year. The average workweek was unchanged at 34.2 hours.

Note to Republicans: Cuts don’t cut it
By Eugene Robinson
Friday, March 4, 2011
After slamming Democrats for not focusing on “jobs, jobs, jobs,” Republicans have decided to ignore their own winning message in favor of “cuts, cuts, cuts.” This is bad economics – and bad politics.
If you don’t believe me, read a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, published Thursday, that has what should be sobering news for Republicans who keep telling us that their radical assault on the size and scope of government has the support of “the American people.”
It doesn’t, according to the survey – not even philosophically. When asked whether government, in general, is trying to do too much or not doing enough, 51 percent said government should do more. That’s not exactly a mandate for slashing federal, state and municipal programs and trying to turn public employees into a caste of untouchables.
For Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and other state and local GOP officials who are trying to crush public employee unions by eliminating collective bargaining rights, the poll suggests extreme caution – not that Walker is likely to pay heed. According to the survey, 77 percent believe that public workers should have the same bargaining rights as private-sector employees.
If Walker really wants to think of himself as the next Ronald Reagan, somebody ought to tell him that Reagan once headed the Screen Actors Guild. Which is a union.
