NEWTOWN Conn. — Newtown officials and parents of children killed in last month’s elementary school massacre called on lawmakers Wednesday to turn the tragedy into “the moment of transformation” by banning high-powered, military-style rifles and high-capacity magazines while providing better care to the mentally ill and requiring more background checks for gun owners.
Several hundred residents, many wearing stickers urging more gun control measures, attended a public hearing held Wednesday night in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 first-graders and six educators dead. State lawmakers are considering possible changes to laws and policies affecting guns, mental health and school safety.

BOSTON (CBS) – Last fall, Bob and Michele Gay were living in Newtown, Connecticut and planning a move to Massachusetts. Their daughter Josephine was one of the children cruelly taken in the first grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
“This happened Friday, we were in shock on Saturday, and when we woke up Sunday I had the strong feeling we had to do something,” Bob said. “Because you have that anger and that anger for me was that I didn’t want December 14 or Sandy Hook School to be the last thing in my daughter’s life or define her life.”
He’s a father on a mission, and he and his wife want to take action. The Gays have turned their unimaginable grief into hope for other families.
“In Josephine’s case she was on the spectrum, mildly autistic but completely non-verbal,” Bob added.
Joey couldn’t speak but her life spoke volumes.

NEWTOWN — The United Way of Western Connecticut, along with the Newtown Rotary, is making more than $220,000 in assistance available to those affected by the Sandy Hook shootings who have immediate financial or mental health needs.
In a statement released Tuesday, local United Way chief Kim Morgan said $110,000 is being made available to help families and first responders still reeling from the tragedy who need financial assistance as a result of lost wages or other financial hardships.
She added that another $110,000 is being made available to help the families and first responders with their mental health needs.
“We understand some families, school personnel and first responders have not been able to return to work or school, or have now incurred added mental health needs,” Morgan said.
“Our goal is to provide funds to help reduce these added burdens and to do so in a process that’s helpful, quick and respectful in an effort to distribute immediate funds to the people who need it the most,” she said.
Morgan has stressed that the money is not from the United Way’s Sandy Hook School Support Fund, but from separate donors who wished to help with immediate needs of those most affected.
A transition team, meanwhile, is in the final stages of developing a foundation that will distribute the more than $8.5 million that’s been donated to the support fund to date.
Morgan said the United Way has teamed up with the state’s Office of Victim Services to help distribute the immediate needs money.

If Americans knew what bullets did to human flesh, they’d support gun control. So perhaps they should be shown in living colour what bullets do to small bodies. A mere description is insufficient for the literal-minded.
Noah Pozner, 6, was one of the 20 child victims in the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14. All the dead were shot between three and 11 times. Tiny Noah took 11 bullets. His mother, Veronique, insisted on an open coffin, Naomi Zeveloff reported in the Jewish Daily Forward.
You’ll probably remember Noah. He was a happy little guy with beautiful heavily lashed eyes and a cheerful smile. In his coffin, there was a cloth placed over the lower part of his face.
“There was no mouth left,” his mother told the Forward. “His jaw was blown away.”
She put a stone in his right hand, a “clear plastic rock with a white angel inside.” She wanted to put a matching stone in his left hand but he had no left hand to speak of.
Parents of the dead children were advised to identify them from photographs, such was the carnage. But every parent reacts differently. Veronique Pozner did the most difficult thing. She asked to see the body. Zeveloff asked her why.
“I owed it to him as his mother, the good, the bad and the ugly,” she said. “. . . And as a little boy, you have to go in the ground. If I am going to shut my eyes to that I am not his mother. I had to bear it. I had to do it.”
When the governor of Connecticut arrived, she brought him to see Noah in the open casket. “If there is ever a piece of legislation that comes across his desk, I needed it to be real for him.” The governor wept.
Death by gun isn’t real to us because we see it only in the movies. We occasionally see photos of human beings as meat, but they are almost always meat belonging to non-white foreigners after a bombing.
Those grieving often don’t share an editor’s delicate sensibilities. Jackie Kennedy, on Air Force One after JFK was shot on Nov. 22, 1963, was asked to change her clothes because the sight of JFK’s blood and brains was upsetting people. She cleaned her face and discarded her pillbox hat, but kept the bloodstained suit on. “Let them see what they’ve done,” she said. Mass shootings had not yet begun.

When 6-year-olds need to be taught how to handle a firearm, we’ve reached a new level in America.
A new Missouri bill that is using a grant provided by the National Rifle Association (NRA) will require that all first graders in the state take a gun-safety training course.
The measure would put a “National Rifle Association’s Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program” instructor in every first grade classroom. The measure would also require teachers to spend eight hours in a training course for how to respond to an armed assailant in the school.
But get this…the NRA will not foot the bill for the cost of substitute teachers on those days — despite the organization’s stated focus on protecting the classroom.

Wayne LaPierre, the National Rifle Association’s chief executive, arrived for his hearing on Capitol Hill in the organization’s trademark fashion: violently.
When he and his colleagues stepped off the elevator in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Wednesday morning and found TV cameras waiting in the hallway, LaPierre’s bodyguards swung into action. One of them, in blatant violation of congressional rules, bumped and body-checked journalists out of the way so they couldn’t film LaPierre or question him as he walked.
“You don’t have jurisdiction here!” a cameraman protested as an NRA goon pushed him against a wall. After the melee, congressional officials informed the NRA officials that, in the halls of Congress, they had to follow congressional procedures — which prohibit manhandling.

Legislative panel holds last hearing near massacre site
Newtown – Sandy Hook residents responded to Second Amendment rights advocates by quoting the Declaration of Independence. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are our inalienable rights, said David Wheeler, the father of 6-year-old Newtown shooting victim Benjamin Wheeler.
“The liberty of any person to own a military-style assault weapon and high-capacity magazine and keep them in their home is second to the right of my son to his life,” Wheeler said.
Newtown officials, parents of Newtown victims and parents of Newtown survivors took the lead at the legislature’s final scheduled Bipartisan Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety hearing Wednesday at Newtown High School. The majority of the speakers said they wanted stricter gun control laws, improved mental health services, safer schools and better parenting.
Bill Sherlach, whose wife, Mary Sherlach, was a school psychologist who was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the Dec. 14 shooting, said it was time for parents to turn off their children’s video games and “do the homework.”
“We need to return to the idea of family instilling love, responsibilities and yes, work ethic,” he said.
