Colleges spend fortunes on lavish athletic facilities
The people in charge of Clemson University’s athletic department have not settled on a design for the miniature golf course they are building for their football team, but they know it will have just nine holes, not 18.
That will leave room for the sand volleyball courts, laser tag, movie theater, bowling lanes, barber shop and other amenities planned in the $55 million complex that South Carolina’s second-largest public university is building exclusively for its football players.
“It’ll be their home on campus, when they’re not in class” said Clemson athletics spokesman Joe Galbraith of a building that represents the latest innovation in the athletic facilities arms race that is costing many of America’s largest public universities hundreds of millions of dollars and shows no signs of subsiding.
Facilities spending is one of the biggest reasons otherwise profitable or self-sufficient athletic departments run deficits, according to a Washington Post review of thousands of pages of financial records from athletic departments at 48 schools in the five wealthiest conferences in college sports.
In 2014, these 48 schools spent $772 million combined on athletic facilities, an 89-percent increase from $408 million spent in 2004, adjusted for inflation. Those figures include annual debt payments, capital expenses and maintenance costs.

WATTS (CBSLA.com) — Community activist Sweet Alice Harris is known for her generous heart for children from low-income families in Los Angeles.
In her annual Christmas toy drive last week, she gave away more than 400 bicycles.
On Tuesday, she expanded her Christmas cheer to seniors at AltaMed, a non-profit health center in Watts, in the first toy drive of its kind – the Sweet Alice Senior Citizen Santa Toy Giveaway.
About 200 seniors enjoyed a holiday meal and received toys so they can give them away to their grandchildren or other young loved ones in their lives.
“Let the grandmothers do something. And this was AltaMed’s idea,” said Sweet Alice.
“Sweet Alice will never turn down an opportunity to help more people in her community,” said Michelle Burton of AltaMed.

#IWillProtectYou: U.S. service members soothe scared Muslim girl

U.S. service members are using the hashtag #IWillProtectYou to show support for a young Muslim girl who believed her family would be forced to flee following Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from the country.
Melissa Chance Yassini of Dallas, Texas, said she came home Dec. 8, to find her 8-year-old daughter packing her bags, Upworthy reported.
Yassini said her daughter was terrified after she heard Trump call for a ban on all Muslims entering the country following the San Bernardino massacre.
“Sad day in America when I have to comfort my 8-year-old child who heard that someone with yellow hair named Trump wanted to kick all Muslims out of America,” Yassini wrote in a Facebook post on Dec. 9.
In response to Trump’s words, Yassini said her daughter began “collecting all her favorite things in a bag in case the army “came to remove the family from their home.”
“She checked the locks on the door 3-4 times,” Yassini wrote. “This is terrorism. No child in America deserves to feel that way.”
The post quickly went viral, and it wasn’t long before Army veteran Kerri Peek saw it, according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Peek decided to take action.
“Post a picture of you in uniform with the hashtag#IWillProtectYou to let these children know that we will not hurt them,” Peek wrote in a Dec. 17 Facebook post. “That they are safe here in America. That we will protect innocents as we always have.”

I’d say that behavior is a warning sign as big as Dallas that those cops do not belong in law enforcement. Until these warning signs are HEEDED and ACTED UPON, there will be state sanctioned police brutality. Florida’s panhandle is the most notoriously redneck part of the state, some of those towns like Marianna, just west of Tallahassee, were KKK strongholds years ago and might still be. Remember the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna? I always thought that FSU kind of toned down the redneck orientation of the Tallahassee locals, but that certainly does not appear to be true.
What I think is really creeping into our society is that a steadily growing number of people seem to believe that if they don’t like someone (for whatever reason) then that person should be dead. And, obviously, when such beliefs are held by those in a position to cause death, then some of those people will become murderers.

In June, Ted Cruz promised on NPR that opposition to gay marriage would be “front and center” in his 2016 campaign.
In July, he said the Supreme Court’s decision allowing same-sex marriage was the “very definition of tyranny” and urged states to ignore the ruling.
But in December, behind closed doors at a big-dollar Manhattan fundraiser, the quickly ascending presidential candidate assured a Republican gay-rights supporter that a Cruz administration would not make fighting same-sex marriage a top priority.
In a recording provided to POLITICO, Cruz answers a flat “No” when asked whether fighting gay marriage is a “top-three priority,” an answer that pleased his socially moderate hosts but could surprise some of his evangelical backers.

For 55 officers involved in fatal shootings this year, it wasn’t their first time

More than 50 police officers involved in fatal shootings this year had previously fired their guns in deadly on-duty shootings, according to a Washington Post investigation.
For a handful of officers, it was their third fatal shooting. For one officer, it was his fourth.
The findings concerned many law enforcement experts, who said most officers never fire their weapons on the job. The analysis also exposed another gap in the federal government’s oversight of fatal police shootings nationwide: the absence of a system for tracking multiple shootings by individual officers.
The 55 officers were identified as part of a Washington Post project tracking all fatal shootings by police in the line of duty in 2015. It is the first nationwide attempt to determine whether fatal police shootings are isolated events in an officer’s career or whether some officers repeatedly fire their weapons in deadly encounters.
The Washington Post also found that another 45 officers had previously been involved in non-fatal shootings.
“It’s a national embarrassment. We don’t even know how many times cops pull their triggers,” said Geoffrey Alpert, a criminologist at the University of South Carolina.

Chicago’s home prices driving some buyers to suburbs
Megan Keskitalo and her husband, Glenn Eckstein, were enthusiastic city dwellers until the suburbs began calling. First it was Chicago’s crime, then it was worry about school districts, and in the end, it was money that pushed them past the city’s edge.
After a long search, the parents of two young daughters packed up their $1,300-a-month three-bedroom Lincoln Square apartment and in September paid $286,000 for a three-bedroom town house in River Forest.
“We were looking (in the city), but we couldn’t find anything in our price range, which was under $350,000,” Keskitalo said.
They aren’t the only ones. While experts say Chicago’s housing market is sizzling — home sales were up about 8.1 percent in Chicago through November of this year, says the Illinois Association of Realtors — not everyone can afford to buy in the city. That’s because home prices are up too.
For the first 11 months of the year, the median price of a home sold in Chicago was up 6.4 percent, according to data from the Realtor group.
That means some potential homebuyers are finding that what they pay in rent in trendy neighborhoods like Lakeview, Lincoln Square and Bucktown can afford them a home with lower monthly mortgage payment in the suburbs. The median home price for a detached single-family home in popular suburbs like Downers Grove, Elmhurst and Clarendon Hills can be two to three times less than those in hot city neighborhoods.
Take Keskitalo and her family: They decided River Forest gave them more bang for their buck, she said. There is less crime, fewer hassles and it’s close to public transportation and activities, she said.
There’s a nearby park and small museums. The elementary school their daughters will eventually attend, Lincoln, just won a National Blue Ribbon award, Keskitalo said. They also like that the area has an urban feel. “We wanted cool, funky, independent restaurants and small businesses so it wasn’t just all chain stores and TGI Fridays,” she said.
It’s not unusual for millennials and Generation Xers with children to flee to what real estate experts call “surbans,” — walkable, amenity-rich suburbs — once they get married, have kids and are looking for less party and more quiet.
