A Star is Born

A Star Is Born is a 1976 American rock music musical film telling the story of a young woman, played by Barbra Streisand, who enters show business, and meets and falls in love with an established male star, played by Kris Kristofferson, only to find her career ascending while his goes into decline. It is a remake of two earlier versions – the 1937 version was a drama starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, and the 1954 version was a musical film starring Judy Garland and James Mason.

sther Hoffman, an aspiring singer/songwriter, meets John Norman Howard, a famous, successful and self-destructive singer/songwriter rock star, whom, after a series of coincidental meetings, she finally starts dating. Believing in her talent, John gives her a helping hand and her career begins to eclipse his.

Writer and director Frank Pierson, in his New West magazine article “My Battles With Barbra and Jon” summarized it this way:

“An actress is a little more than a woman, an actor a little less than a man (Oscar Wilde) … The woman in our story is ambitious to become a star, but it is not necessary: it can make her happier and richer, but she could give it all away and not be a better or worse person. With stardom she is only a little more than a woman. For the man, his career is his defense against a self-destructive part of himself that has led him into outrageous bursts of drunkenness, drugs, love affairs, fights and adventures that have made him a legend. His career is also what gives him his sense of who he is. Without it, he is lost and confused; his demons eat him alive. That’s why he is a little less than a man. And it is not that her success galls him, or that she wins over him; the tragedy is that all her love is not enough to keep alive a man who has lost what he measures his manhood with; his career.”[2]

And so the conclusion is measured by the theme. He takes his life in the mistaken belief that he will then not drag her down with him.

      Let’s commit to phone-banking for Bernie…There are so many folks out there who don’t have the necessary information…others who aren’t voting because Bernie has been so marginalized and his good record muted and distorted …and so folks don’t think there’s a viable alternative and so they’ve resigned themselves to Hillary as the Dem. candidate…others think the system’s been rigged ..and many have bought into the lie that only Hillary can beat the Republicans…

      There are so many deliberately erroneous stuff that’s been put out there and these things are skewing votes – even reluctant ones – in Hillary’s favor…

      We can change this…I only regret we didn’t start sooner…

    Flint Polling Places Ran Out Of Ballots, Turned Voters Away

    FLINT, MI — At least one Flint, Michigan polling location ran out of Democratic ballots on Tuesday, forcing voters to either wait over an hour for city clerks to deliver new ones or to leave their phones numbers to be called when more ballots arrived.

    Grace Emmanuel Church, one of the busiest polling locations in Flint servicing Precinct 49, ran out of ballots for the presidential primary around 4 p.m., a poll worked confirmed to ThinkProgress. Flint’s NBC25 reported that two other locations across the city ran out of ballots as well.

    Loyce Driskell, an elections administrator at Grace Emmanuel, told ThinkProgress that she has worked at the polls for four elections, but this is the first time she has seen a location run out of ballots. A city clerk did not deliver more ballots to the location until around 5:30 p.m., the beginning of the evening rush.

    Driskell said she took down the phone numbers for ten people who did not have time to wait. Seven she was later able to reach, and they told her they would come back to vote. Three of the numbers were disconnected or she was not able to reach the voter.

    The increased national attention on Flint likely created increased interest in the primary. Both Democratic candidates have visited the city and they held a debate here on Sunday, much of which focused on the water that is continuing to poison the city’s residents.

      I read somewhere – I think on Instagram during Black History Month – a few folks were passing around this information and other pertinent facts about our historic first black First Lady…and so many people were saying they never knew any of these impressive but basic part of her biography…

      Most people don’t even know that not only did she too attend Harvard Law school, but that she graduated before the President…and was recruited right out of Law school by Sidley Austin – where like the President, she’d also previously interned as a Law student…

      They don’t even know that at Harvard, she unlike most Harvard law students, chose to spend a huge chunk of her precious time, volunteering at the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau…helping poor families who needed but couldn’t afford legal services..

      We’ve seen how other First Ladies are effusively talked-up and every attempt made to elevate them…even as their resumes are blatantly embellished and their life stories extensively revised and white-washed to burnish their reputations…

      Yet somehow curiously, the reverse is the case for our incredibly accomplished and historic First Lady who has her brilliant resume downplayed, trivialized and pooh-poohed, while every effort is made to diminish and dismiss this incredibly magnificent and historic First Lady …

      I’ve already shared here how furious I get with the White House with how they’ve done such a piss-poor job of promoting our FLOTUS…Most people don’t even know what she does every day as her events are literally blacked out by the White House press folks …it’s seriously weird how they go out of their way to highlight V.P Joe’s wife as folks are only just starting to notice – many times, even over the First Lady…And though they started grudgingly mentioning FLOTUS here and there occasionally in these West Wing Week videos – and only because – and after some of us spoke up about it…they still curiously omit her important solo events and her speeches – and even when she’s with the President, they do not show her…instead, like in the WWW video that mentioned her attending the Prayer Breakfast with the President that week, they chose to show a shot of their motorcade, and a clip of the President speaking – not one sighting of her…But the latest West Wing Week video as usual, featured a full minute of the V.P’s wife giving a speech at the welcome ceremony for Scott Kelly..

      This is very bothersome, because this is the official documentation of this Presidency as told by the administration…this is for posterity…and FLOTUS will be missing in many of these weekly videos…even though she has a full daily schedule…and hosted some of the highlighted events with her husband…but is curiously completely blacked-out – every pun intended as my friend remarked…

      As we watch remembrances of Nancy Reagan, we are further confronted with tweaked and revised narratives – and the impressions they are designed to leave on the observer – especially as created and told to future generations…how that out-sized reach and ‘power’ of ‘official’ White House photographers and videographers – and the stories they choose to tell and how they tell them, makes every difference – as I’ve often shared here…Beyond of course the photographer’s quest to cultivate a following of the masses -to sell their collection of future picture books for mucho deniro …and to keep milking their access for good and bad…they shape and control the narrative…blatantly and on the sly…and I worry that this predominantly white press and photography White House office, has honestly not served our historic first black First Lady well…not in the least…

      I see that Pete Souza tweeted out a few pictures he took of the Reagans when he was the White House photographer…LOL …and as I’ve always shared here, I view him rather suspiciously…

      It will be my life’s work to make sure that our exquisite FLOTUS is not only respected and celebrated today…but that future generations will honor her in every way…and that these ‘omissions’ are corrected…

      That’s a promise…

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Foreign diplomats are expressing alarm to U.S. government officials about what they say are inflammatory and insulting public statements by Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, according to senior U.S. officials.

    Officials from Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia have complained in recent private conversations, mostly about the xenophobic nature of Trump’s statements, said three U.S. officials, who all declined to be identified.

    “As the (Trump) rhetoric has continued, and in some cases amped up, so, too, have concerns by certain leaders around the world,” said one of the officials.

    Gaming Out the Convention

    We’re already seeing people try to report on what a contested convention in Cleveland would like. It’s a tricky task. Getting it close to right involves understanding several different pieces.

    Greg Sargent is dealing with two of them. First, there’s an effort to figure out the advance game. What’s the most effective way to keep Donald Trump from winning an outright majority of the delegates. Without this, there will be no contested convention to talk about. Is it better to stop Trump by having three opponents splitting delegates, or two, or maybe a head-to-head matchup would work best?

    The second piece is to look at how different delegate splits would play or look at the convention. Obviously, it would be less painful and divisive to deny Trump the nomination if he isn’t even close to having a majority, or if the second place finisher is only a couple of dozen delegates behind him. If he’s got a large plurality lead, Trump and his supporters will have a strong moral argument, supposedly, that he’s the only fair choice of the electorate. But the three-way split strategy to stop Trump will make it more likely that Trump has a significant lead over all of his opponents.

    This is useful stuff to think about, but there’s a lot more to consider.

    The most important thing to understand is how the mechanics of the convention would work. Which candidates will be eligible for consideration, and when in the process will they become eligible? Which individuals, groups, committees, will have the power to interpret or change the rules? Which rules may need to be interpreted or changed in which scenarios? Who is positioned already to control this process and what candidate do they support, if any? Which candidate will do the best job prior to the convention of influencing who the delegates will actually be so that they can bank their support on a second ballot? How will the anti-Trump candidates coordinate, assuming they can act collectively at all?

    For anyone seeking to educate the public about what to expect, that’s a daunting amount of information to wrestle with before you can offer a really informed opinion.

    And there’s another problem.

    We haven’t seen a truly contested election in a long time. There have been test votes to change the rules, but those have failed. No one can remember a situation where actual multiple-ballot wheeling and dealing took place. And, back when those kinds of deals actually occurred, the candidates were more clearly representative of factions than they are today.

    It’s true that Cruz is a Southerner, but so is Rubio, and neither of them really represent a regional faction because there are no regional issues like Jim Crow or slavery at stake. None of the candidates clearly represents the Eastern financial establishment. Trump comes closest by biography, but he also has the most dedicated opposition from that quarter. Cruz is loathed by the Washington Establishment, but he’s the candidate with a spouse who works for Goldman Sachs. Rubio has been the golden boy of the financial elites since Bush and Christie and Walker dropped out, but not for any clear reason beyond his reasonableness on immigration. And Kasich probably comes closest to a Rockefeller or Eisenhower Republican. He did, after all, work for Lehman Brothers.

    Why working-class whites can’t propel Donald Trump to ultimate victory

    If there’s one thing we know for sure about Donald Trump, it’s that he’s a candidate for white people.

    This would seem to be an almost insurmountable problem in an increasingly diverse America, but some are beginning to suspect — either with hope or fear, depending on whom you ask — that Trump could win a general election by pulling in large numbers of working-class white voters who are responding to his message of alienation, anger, and resentment. As The Wall Street Journal recently put it, “Trump’s success in attracting white, working-class voters is raising the prospect that the Republican Party, in an electoral gamble, could attempt to take an unexpected path to the White House that would run through the largely white and slow-to-diversify upper Midwest.”

    Indeed, if Trump were to win the White House, this would seem to be the only way. But it’s not going to happen.

    You can argue, and many people have, that the alienation of the Democratic Party from the white working class is a serious problem for them, and it’s part of what produces off-year defeats in years like 2010 and 2014. But because of the country’s changing demographics, the white working class becomes a smaller and smaller portion of the voting public with each election, particularly in presidential election years when turnout is higher across the board. That’s why Barack Obama could lose the white working class in 2012 by a staggering 26 points (62-36), and still win the election comfortably. So if you’re going to argue that Donald Trump will ride these voters to victory, you’d have to believe that he’d do not just better than Mitt Romney did with them, but hugely better, so much so that it would overcome the advantages the Democratic nominee will have with other voters.

    Consider, for instance, the Latino vote. Mitt Romney won only 27 percent of Latinos in 2012, an abysmal performance that convinced many Republicans that if they didn’t “reach out” to this fast-growing segment of the electorate, they might be unable to win the White House any time soon. Latinos will be an even larger portion of the electorate this year than they were four years ago. Now think what will happen if Donald Trump, the man who made venomous antipathy toward immigrants one of the cornerstones of his campaign, becomes the GOP nominee. Not only would it be shocking if he got 20 percent of their votes, his nomination will almost certainly spur higher turnout among Latinos than we’ve ever seen before.

    That’s another problem with the blue-collar whites theory of a Trump victory: It rests on the idea that he’d bring out large numbers of those voters who don’t vote often, but also requires that people opposed to Trump won’t be similarly motivated to turn out. “I find it just so implausible that we could have this massive white nativist mobilization without also provoking a big mobilization among minority voters,” political scientist Ruy Teixeira recently told The New Yorker. “It is kind of magical thinking that you could do one thing and not have the other.”

    As recently as Sunday, Mitt Romney conceded that Donald Trump is “probably most likely to be the Republican nominee” for president this year, but the failed 2012 candidate still believes he can help prevent such an outcome.
    In his new role as Donald Trump’s chief adversary, former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has turned his alarm-fueled message into a robocall on behalf of struggling GOP contender Sen. Marco Rubio, NBC News has confirmed.

    Romney’s warning is coming to a phone near you in four states voting Tuesday: Michigan, Idaho, Hawaii and Mississippi.
    As a rule, when prominent officials record automated messages on behalf of a campaign, it’s effectively an endorsement, but this case is a little unusual. Romney, who’s said he’ll officially back a GOP candidate sometime after next week’s primaries, isn’t yet urging voters to support Rubio, so much as he’s encouraging Republicans to vote for someone other than Trump.

    As the New York Times reported, Romney’s call explicitly says he’s calling on Rubio’s behalf, but at no point does Romney actually say anything about Rubio or his candidacy. Instead, the former governor urges voters to cast ballots for “a candidate who can defeat Hillary Clinton and who can make us proud.” The message goes on to say, “If we Republicans were to choose Donald Trump as our nominee, I believe that the prospects for a safe and prosperous future would be greatly diminished – and I’m convinced Donald Trump would lose to Hillary Clinton.”
