Kenneth Brian “Babyface” Edmonds (born April 10, 1958) is an American R&B and pop singer, songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, record producer, film producer, and entrepreneur.
Kenneth Edmonds was born on April 10, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana[1] to Marvin and Barbara Edmonds. Barbara was a pharmaceutical plant manager. Edmonds, who is the fifth of six brothers (which also included future After 7 bandmembers Melvin and Kevon Edmonds, the latter of whom later had a modestly successful solo career), attended North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana and as a shy youth, wrote songs to express his emotions.[citation needed] When he was in eighth grade, Edmonds’s father died of lung cancer, leaving his mother to raise her sons alone. At this stage, Edmonds became determined to have a career in music.

Trusted Martin Luther King civil rights photographer was FBI informant
One of the most celebrated photographers of the US civil rights era, who was part of Martin Luther King Jr’s trusted inner circle, has been posthumously unmasked as an FBI informant.

Known as the “original civil rights photographer,” he also captured thousands of images chronicling lives of every day struggle in the Deep South, along with demonstrations, riots and criminal trials.

Will his bunker mentality finally destroy Gordon Brown?One of his most important photographs was taken in 1968 during the Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike when a crowd stood with placards reading “I Am a Man”.
On April 4 that year Dr King was assassinated on the balcony of room 306 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, and Withers was in the room shortly afterwards.
Such was his standing that photographer Joseph Louw, who took a picture on the balcony moments after the shooting, went to Withers who developed the image in his dark room.
But, unknown to Dr King and other civil rights leaders, Withers was also passing photographs of them, their biographical details, summaries of their political beliefs, and even their car licence plate numbers to the government.
He informed on pastors and political candidates, and alerted the FBI to planned demonstrations. Some of his information helped to disrupt a Memphis militant group called The Invaders in the late 1960s.
The tip-offs were so detailed they included information on a teacher who had lent a car to a suspected militant, and how cigarettes were being brought to activists in jail. He even provided pictures of priests who were suspected of supporting striking black workers.
The day before Dr King’s death Withers had been taking photographs of him, but he had also been telling the FBI about a meeting of suspected black militants.
The photographer was also at Dr King’s funeral where he discovered information, passed on to the FBI, that two men blamed for a previous riot were planning a return to Memphis.
Withers’ FBI role was revealed by a two-year investigation by Memphis newspaper The Commercial Appeal, who obtained some of his files under the Freedom of Information Act.
The FBI refused to release his entire file but did disclose 369 pages of documents in which Withers was mostly referred to by his informant code number ME 338-R.
However, an apparent clerical error meant that his name was also included, allowing the true identity of ME 338-R to be established.
The FBI, which normally closely guards the identities of informants, later said it was investigating how the mistake had occurred.
Historians of the civil rights movement described the unmasking of Withers as a shocking betrayal and an illustration of how far J Edgar Hoover’s FBI was prepared to go to infiltrate it.
Withers, a former police officer, who also served in the Pacific in the Second World War, passed his tip-offs to two agents called Howell Lowe and William H Lawrence.
He had eight children and there was speculation that his motives were financial.
Rosalind Withers, one of his daughters, rejected the disclosure, and said: “My father’s not here to defend himself. That is a very, very strong, strong accusation.” But Andrew Young, 78, the Georgia politician and pastor who was a friend of Dr King, was forgiving.
“I always liked him because he was a good photographer,” he told the newspaper. “I don’t think Dr King would have minded him making a little money on the side.”
Athan Theoharis, a historian at Marquette University, Wisconsin, and author of a book on the FBI, said: “It is an amazing betrayal. It really speaks to the degree that the FBI was able to engage individuals within the civil rights movement. This man was so well trusted.”
The Tea Party Candidates are winning in tonights primaries (Delaware, New Hampshire, Wisconsin). Rethugs don’t know what to do about these “racist” candidates winning. Eiffel Tower Evacuated Following Bomb Threat

A reported bomb threat has forced an evacuation of the Eiffel Tower and the surrounding area this evening, including local park Champ de Mars, MSNBC reports.
The police press office says it is still investigating the credibility of the threat.
Some 25,000 have been evacuated and officers are carrying out a search of the area with sniffer dogs, per BBC.
Today the French senate approved a law banning any veils that cover the face, making France the first European country to support such a measure, per CNN International, though it is unclear if that is related.

Miami, Florida (CNN) – The ex-chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, Jim Greer, is now apologizing for stoking fears about President Obama’s address to school children last year.
Greer, now under indictment on fraud and money-laundering charges after being drummed out of the state party, also accused “many within the GOP” of having “racist views.”
In September 2009, conservatives raised questions about the motives of president’s back-to-school speech, which was beamed into many of the nation’s classrooms. Greer was among them, charging that “taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama’s socialist ideology.”
“While I support educating our children to respect both the office of the American President and the value of community service, I do not support using our children as tools to spread liberal propaganda,” he said then in a statement that made waves around the country.
Greer is now apologizing for those comments.
“In the year since I issued a prepared statement regarding President Obama speaking to the nation’s school children, I have learned a great deal about the party I so deeply loved and served,” Greer said in a statement Tuesday to CNN and other media outlets.
“Unfortunately, I found that many within the GOP have racist views and I apologize to the President for my opposition to his speech last year and my efforts to placate the extremists who dominate our Party today. My children and I look forward to the President’s speech.”

A 17-year-old British boy has been banned from the United States for life after firing off an email to the White House in which he referred to President Barack Obama as a “prick,” according to reports.
Bedfordshire teen Luke Angel says he felt compelled to e-mail Obama after watching programs on the 9/11 terrorist attacks and conducting his own research on conspiracy theories. Bedfordshire On Sunday reports that Angel could not recall the e-mail’s specifics as he said he was “drunk or high” at the time it was written about a month ago.
However, he acknowledged using the curse word and other threatening language in reference to Obama, while also expressing clear dislike for the the U.S. government at large, in the e-mail. “It was silly — the sort of thing you do when you’re a teenager and have had a few,” he is quoted as saying.
After a brief FBI investigation and subsequent follow-up by Bedfordshire Police, officers reportedly told Angel he was “banned from America forever,” though no further action is currently planned.
This kid needs to learn respect. We certainly don’t need him here.

French Senate Passes Full Islamic Veils Ban

PARIS — The French Senate on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a bill banning the burqa-style Islamic veil in public, but the leaders of both parliamentary houses said they had asked a special council to first ensure the measure passes constitutional muster amid concerns its tramples on religious freedoms.
The Senate voted 246 to 1 Tuesday in favor of the bill, which has already passed in the lower chamber, the National Assembly. It will need President Nicolas Sarkozy’s signature.
Legislative leaders said they wanted the Constitutional Council to examine it.
“This law was the object of long and complex debates,” the Senate president, Gerard Larcher, and National Assembly head Bernard Accoyer said in a joint statement explaining their move. They said in a joint statement that they want to be certain there is “no uncertainty” about it conforming to the constitution.

Senate Clears $30 Billion Small Business Aid Bill

WASHINGTON — The Senate has advanced a bill to create a $30 billion government fund to help open lending for credit-starved small businesses, handing President Barack Obama a long-sought victory.
Democrats beat back a GOP filibuster of the measure with crucial help from Ohio Republican Sen. George Voinovich. The 61-37 tally sets the stage for a final vote later this week to return the measure to the House, which is likely to approve it for Obama’s signature.
The new fund would help community banks increase lending to small businesses hurt by the recession and the 2008 Wall Street crisis. The bill would also provide about $12 billion in tax breaks over a decade to both large and small businesses.

D.C. mayoral primary may be felt far beyond the District

Washington (CNN) — Mayor Adrian Fenty swept into office in 2006 promising to fix the District of Columbia’s struggling schools. Now, Fenty is in the fight of his career in part because of how he’s tried to reform the district’s schools.
Fenty is in a nail-biter of a race in Tuesday’s primary, running neck-and-neck with challenger and City Council Chairman Vincent Gray.
“We’ve got an uphill battle because we made tough decisions,” said Fenty while campaigning at a local street fair. “We’ll continue to make those tough decisions because they’re right for the people. But we’re not naive. We know this has cost us a little political popularity that we came into the polls with.”
While this is a local election — the Democratic mayoral primary — the race is being closely watched far beyond the District because the outcome could carry significant implications for the national debate over education reform.
Early in his term, Fenty brought in a determined reformer, Michelle Rhee, as chancellor of D.C. Public Schools. Rhee has since become famous for her reform efforts, ushering in a wave of controversial changes that has become a model of education reform advocated by the Obama administration.

Budget Deficit in U.S. Narrows 13% to $90.5 Billion on Rising Tax Receipts

The U.S. government posted a smaller budget deficit in August compared with the same month last year, helped by rising tax receipts.
The excess of spending over revenue totaled $90.5 billion last month, smaller than the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News and down 13 percent from $103.6 billion in August 2009, according to a Treasury Department report issued today in Washington. The gap for the fiscal year that started in October was $1.26 trillion compared with $1.37 trillion last year at the same time.
The economic recovery has helped generate more tax revenue for the Treasury, even as the Congressional Budget Office forecasts the deficit this fiscal year will reach $1.34 trillion, the second-largest on record. The Obama administration faces the challenge of trying to limit the shortfall while stimulating an economy with joblessness close to 10 percent.

Retail Sales in U.S. Increase for a Second Month

Sales at U.S. retailers rose in August for a second consecutive month, easing concern the economy will stumble in the second half of the year.
Purchases increased 0.4 percent following a 0.3 percent gain in July that was smaller than previously estimated, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. Sales excluding automobiles advanced twice as much as forecast.
Demand at chains like Kohl’s Corp. and Ross Stores Inc. climbed as more states had tax-free holidays and some merchants offered bigger discounts to lure back-to-school shoppers. A lack of jobs and the need to repair household finances will probably restrain consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the economy, for the rest of the year.

Winfrey kicked off her 25th and final season of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Monday with promised surprises. After teasing the 300 audience members with a suggestion she might take them on a trip to New York, Philadelphia or Los Angeles, she said her last season merited something “bigger.”
“So I started to think about where would I most want to go,” she said over the din of an audience that suddenly understood they were going somewhere far away.
“Maybe I should take you all with me to the other side of the world. We’re going to Australia,” Winfrey shouted.
With that, a mock-up of a Quantas Air Lines jet rolled onto stage, its door opened and actor John Travolta, who also flies airplanes, stepped out dressed as a Quantas pilot.

Yale University announced on Monday that it was planning to create a liberal arts college in Singapore that would be financed entirely by the government there and could, in time, establish a new model for higher education in Asia.
While Yale has many international programs, it has not put its name on an overseas project the way it envisions doing at the National University of Singapore. The new institution, to be called Yale-N.U.S. College, would seek to import Yale’s signature residential college concept — in which students
live, study and take classes in an intimate setting — as well as a curriculum that encourages critical thinking and inquiry in the humanities and sciences.
But the diplomas would lack the cachet of a full Yale degree; they would be issued by the National University of Singapore. By contrast, New York University’s ambitious new college in Abu Dhabi, also underwritten by the government there, awards N.Y.U. diplomas.

Obama weighs interim appointment for consumer agency

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Obama administration is weighing the appointment of Elizabeth Warren as the temporary director of a newly created U.S. consumer financial regulator, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
Naming Warren as the interim head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is an option available to President Barack Obama if he wants to avoid what would be a tough fight for her confirmation.
Warren is an outspoken consumer advocate whose appointment many on Wall Street oppose.
The sources said, however, that the option of naming her temporarily was only one scenario under consideration and was not necessarily Obama’s preferred option.
