Former Senator Al D’Amato (R-NY) let loose with a string of profanities as he blasted a fellow Fox Business Network guest for his comments about Africans (h/t J$P).
The blowup came during a discussion on Thursday’s edition of “Money Rocks”about whether or not to privatize the US Postal Service. Though all of the guests appeared to agree about the issue at hand, several took offense at the comments of GOP strategist Jack Burkman.
Burkman launched the discussion by saying, “most of these guys working in the Post Office should be driving cabs, and I think we should stop importing labor from Nigeria and Ethiopia. That’s the skill level.”
When it was his turn to speak, D’Amato started by criticizing Burkman, saying, “Jack would’ve done well without all the name calling.”
Tamara Holder, an attorney who was also on the show, chimed in, saying, “Making all these somewhat racist statements about Nigeria is a spinning of sorts…this has to do with government waste.”
Burkman then tried to defend himself: “Most people employed by the United States Post Office…are thoroughly unskilled labor,” he said.
This proved to be the last straw for D’Amato, who cut in and unloaded:
“You are a nasty racist..that’s a bunch of bullshit and you should be ashamed of yourself and have your mouth washed out.”
When Burkman tried to cut in, D’Amato shot him down: “Wait a minute…shut up. I listened to your racist bullshit.”
Uh huh…decent people get tired of the bullshit. D’ Amato wasn’t playing that game!

During the early portion of the Bush/Cheney administration, progressives got organized on line to fight back because the Democrats in Congress were showing no fight. We revitalized the party, even if we didn’t fundamentally change it. Something similar is happening on the right with the Tea Party movement, but it isn’t quite the same. No one could plausibly accuse the Republicans in Washington of backing down from a fight with the Obama administration. Even before the president was sworn in, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell decided on a scorched-earth opposition, using every procedural hurdle in the book. That the president has compiled an astonishing record of legislative achievement (in historical terms) despite this opposition doesn’t change the fact that McConnell and the Republicans have stymied the president on closing Guantanamo, on addressing climate change, on tackling immigration reform, and held up so many judicial nominees that there are now a higher percentage of Republican judges than when Obama took office. If you are a conservative who opposes the president’s agenda, you can’t fairly say that the Republicans have failed to fight for you.
So, why are rank-and-file Republicans throwing their bums out in primaries all over the country?
I think, obviously, the starting point in explaining this has to be the trauma of George W. Bush’s failure both on policy and politically. Whatever ‘compassionate conservatism’ was supposed to mean, it wound up meaning a bigger role for the federal government in education, a much bigger Medicare entitlement that now includes prescription drugs, and yawning economy-killing deficits. That might have been easier to swallow if Bush had delivered more for conservative causes, but his main contribution was simple cronyism and corruption and lax regulation. It might have been good for some high donors in the short-term, but it was no model for the future. The Republican voter isn’t asking for a return to the Bush years. They’re looking for a party that actually follows through on its rhetoric about the government being the problem, not the solution. They seem to have wised up to the fact that the GOP fat cats have been feeding them a line of shit.
Which leads me to second explanation. The rank-and-file have been indoctrinated, literally. They’ve consumed so much of this shit from Fox News and hate radio that they actually believe in it. And one of the things they believe is that our institutions are not trustworthy and they’re not worth a damn. It’s hard to argue with them about that; it’s just that everything they’re doing is making things worse. By making it harder for the government to function and making it harder to do the things that need to be done, the right-wing creates a self-fulfilling prophesy. We ought to close Guantanamo Bay, but the people are too frightened and, so, no one has the president’s back to make that decision. Congress denies him the funds. The same is true on a host of other issues, most notably stimulus spending, climate change, and immigration reform.
Does anyone think our immigration policy doesn’t need reforming? Making that impossible doesn’t help anyone.
Republicans are getting thrown out of office because they aren’t crazy. But that’s because they’ve been teaching their base to be crazy for so long that they’ve finally started to demand that their representatives be crazy, too.
And no one can get control of this beast.

Before she stole the hearts of tea party activists, Delaware GOP Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell was best known for her regular and bizarre punditry on 22 different episodes of Politically Incorrect. The host of that show, Bill Maher, now has an HBO show called Real Time.
Last night, Real Time aired its first show of the current season. Maher began by mocking O’Donnell, calling her “an uemployed, anti-masturbation activist and a close friend of mine.” “I created her,” Maher told the audience, turning to the camera and stating, “You owe me Christine O’Donnell.” Maher said that he has great fondness for O’Donnell, adding, “She does not have a mean bone in her body, or any other bone in her body.”
Later in the show, Maher played a previously-unaired Oct. 29, 1999 clip of O’Donnell on Politically Incorrect, in which O’Donnell said she once “practiced witchcraft”:
O’DONNELL: I dabbled into witchcraft — I never joined a coven. But I did, I did. … I dabbled into witchcraft. I hung around people who were doing these things. I’m not making this stuff up. I know what they told me they do. […]
One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar, and I didn’t know it. I mean, there’s little blood there and stuff like that. … We went to a movie and then had a midnight picnic on a satanic altar.

We in the United States possess the greatest resources and wealth ever known to humankind. So to have over 44 million people — 14% of our population — and 20% of our children living in poverty strains the soul of America. That fully one in four Americans — 72 million people — are “near poor” (officially, a family of four earning just $32,634 in 2009) should call us into action. It’s a moral disgrace.
