  1. Barack Obama should ignore Bill Clinton

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1010/43110.html

The pendulum may have been nudged too far, the thumb placed too heavy upon the scale, the votes counted before they have even been cast.

The media are nervous. Have they gone too far in predicting the Democrats’ outcome on Nov. 2? Has President Barack Obama been given his walking papers too soon?

It was inevitable that with the midterm congressional elections less than a month away, the story line would start moving back just a little.

Newsweek, Friday: “Simply put, in the Newsweek Poll, voters said they trust Democrats more than Republicans to handle pretty much every problem currently facing the country.”

  2. California Parents Could Get Jail Time if Kids Miss School

    http://colorlines.com/archives/2010/10/californias_new_ant-truancy_law_promises_to_hit_black_and_latino_families_more.html

Last Thursday California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB 1317, a new statewide anti-truancy bill that officials hope will curb chronic absenteeism in elementary and middle school students. The new law will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2011, and allow state officials to prosecute parents when their kids don’t show up to school.

The initiative was pushed by California attorney general hopeful Kamala Harris, a rising star in the Democratic Party who “Today” show host Matt Lauer dubbed “the female Obama.” Harris has smartly tied crime rates with dropout rates; the correlation between kids’ educational achievement and the rate of their criminal convictions is direct. And yet the solutions are alarmingly punitive.

  4. Internal Emails Suggest Palin to Run for President

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/akmuckraker/internal-emails-suggest-p_b_751356.html

It has long been speculated that former Alaska governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin would mount a bid for the White House in 2012. So far, Palin has avoided directly answering questions about her intent. However, internal emails obtained by The Mudflats provide the most conclusive evidence to date that Palin will be running for president, and also indicate a behind-the-scenes rift between the Palins and an Alaskan candidate that they have both publicly endorsed.

An irate email written by Todd Palin seems to confirm his wife’s presidential ambition, and revealed his anger at Alaska Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller. The email demands that the treasurer of SarahPAC, Tim Crawford, “hold off on any letter of support for Joe,” and came on the heels of an interview Miller gave to Neil Cavuto on Fox News Sunday.

In the email, Todd Palin instructs SarahPAC treasurer Tim Crawford to “Hold off on any letter for Joe. Sarah put her ass on the line for Joe and yet he can’t answer a simple question “is Sarah Palin Qualified to be President”. I DON’T KNOW IF SHE IS.”

    Run Sarah, Run!!!!!!!!!!!!

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/05/michael-steele-minimum-wage-cant-answer_n_751760.html

Via the daily HuffPost Hill newsletter comes word that Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele couldn’t say what the minimum wage is in an interview airing Tuesday night.

“The Last Word” host Lawrence O’Donnell challenged Steele to defend Alaska Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller’s assertion that the minimum wage is unconstitutional, according to a rush transcript blasted out by MSNBC and reproduced below. “I had a minimum wage job once, and I had trouble living on that,” O’Donnell said when Steele tried to deflect the line of questioning.

Then he asked Steele to tell him what the minimum wage is. For the record, it’s $7.25.

“Whether the minimum wage is $7 or $10 or whatever it happens to be in whatever part of the country you live in, the fact is if you don’t have a job, that number is irrelevant until you get one,” Steele protested. “That’ll be your headline: ‘Steele doesn’t know what the minimum wage is.

Education reform was Oprah Winfrey’s star guest for two full days this week when she hosted a two-part series on the new education documentary “Waiting for Superman,” and it was a sight to behold. “Today you’re going to learn things that you had no idea were going on in this country in our schools,” were Oprah’s ominous opening words, and so was the beginning of what turned out to be a two-hour infomercial for the Obama administration’s education reform agenda.

  9. Ex-BART Cop Mehserle Demands New Trial in Oscar Grant Killing

    http://colorlines.com/archives/2010/10/johannes_mehserle_demands_new_trial.html

Johannes Mehserle, the ex-BART cop who shot and killed an unarmed black man named Oscar Grant while he lay face down on a train platform, asked for a retrial on Friday afternoon, Bay Area Fox affiliate KTVU reports.

Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter this summer by a Los Angeles jury after a four-week trial. He faced second-degree murder charges for killing Grant on New Year’s Day 2009.

Mehserle’s defense attorney Michael Rains argued that the Alameda County district attorney’s office misled jurors when prosecutor David Stein told jurors that there had never been an incident of Taser confusion that had led to a suspect’s death. Much of Mehserle’s defense rested on the claim that he accidentally pulled out his Sig Sauer gun when he meant to pull out his Taser, and that he never meant to kill the 23-year-old father that night.

What? He didn’t get a fair trial? The gall of this mutha…

    http://negrointellectual.blogspot.com/2010/10/hes-man-not-messiah-barack-obama-and.html#more

This latest offering on my blog has been a long time coming. It was originally inspired by a Twitter conversation I had with Professor Blair L. M. Kelley of North Carolina State University earlier this summer. She urged me to write something then (as did others) and I’m just now getting around to it. It seems though, however, that this topic is still quite relevant.

For quite some time now, we have been hearing about the growing malaise with President Barack Obama, but not from the usual conservative critics, but from his so called “progressive” base. It started in small pockets at first, ironically just like the Tea Party Movement, only with the liberal criticism it was initially confined to a few academics articulating their disappointment with Obama as president. Now, like a virus, the “buyer’s remorse” attitude seems to be sweeping through the mainstream media outlets as well as in the liberal blogosphere.

Obama is, however, the pastor of The Church of Unrealistic Expectations and he was forced into the job. He thought he was elected President of the United States, but no, some of the folks who elected him had other plans. Not only will you [Obama] get the economy back online, you must also bring peace to the Palestine/Israel conflict, end world hunger, stop greed, stop racism, stop damn near any and everything we can think of that we are not going to do for ourselves.

This is NOT the time to sit down and be armchair progressives and back seat drivers for change. We need people who are going to not just speak the rhetoric of change; we need folks who are going to do the WORK need to implement change. That responsibility cannot be just left to the president to do alone. If he has forgotten, as many suggest, then let us support him and hold not only President Obama, but also ourselves accountable.

    http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2010/10/michelle_obama_finally_doing_s.html

WASHINGTON–First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday will finally start helping Democrats win in the Nov. 2 mid-term elections: she will host a phone chat with the Democratic National Committee’s grassroots arm, Organizing for America.

The OFA, which absorbed the Obama for America presidential campaign, announced on Monday, “This Wednesday, October 6th, at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Michelle Obama will be hosting a Vote 2010 update with OFA supporters to discuss the work we’ve all been doing together and the importance of volunteering in the final four weeks before the November elections.”

The live chat is designed to crank up turnout on Nov. 2 and also to generate small dollar donations–the link to getting a reminder for the Wednesday call is connected to an on-line donation page.

Mrs. Obama does not return to the campaign trail until Oct. 13, when she stumps in Chicago at two fund-raisers.

Mrs. Obama’s October political travel–the first since the 2008 presidential election–will have her headline nine events in seven citiies in six states–all friendly Democratic territory.

Slowly but surely, (and no doubt strategically) first lady Michelle Obama is working her way onto the campaign trail.

Last week, on a conference call, she rallied nurses around health-care legislation, and Tuesday morning she sent out a personal plea for small donations to her party’s base that looks back at the “movement” fervor of campaign 2008 and tries to connect it to November.

“Now, with the stakes so high in this fall’s elections, we’re asking you to help grow this movement again. . . . But Barack can’t keep making progress without strong allies in Congress. And now the same people who’ve opposed us at every turn are targeting those who voted to make change real. They think we can’t do it again. But they’re wrong,” she writes in an e-mail to the Organizing for America group. “If the folks who I saw in 2008 – those of you who packed up your bags and slept on floors and made calls and talked to voters day after day – are ready to stand with us again, then I’m ready for any challenge that lies ahead.”

    Dear Ametia,

I’ve always said that 2008 was an amazing journey. But nothing from that election struck me more than seeing so many giving their time and lending their voices because they were ready for change.

Two years ago, in state after state — no matter where I went — I saw grandmothers out canvassing, college kids traveling to swing states and sleeping on gymnasium floors, and people using their lunch breaks to make a few more calls. So many got involved for the very first time, each one bringing others along with them.

    It was inspiring to witness.

Now, Barack and I need you to help show that energy again. Because this is such a critical moment, a group of grassroots donors are ready to match any contribution you can give.

Across the country, teachers and firefighters, truckers and nurses have made pledges of support hoping to inspire you to take the next step. Because of them, a $15 contribution will become $30.

Donate today and answer your fellow supporter’s pledge to match whatever you can give.

    Here’s how it works:

    — You choose the amount you are able to give and another supporter willing to match that amount doubles it.

    — You can choose to write a note to the individual who matched your donation and tell them why you decided to own a piece of this movement.

Since the day Barack announced his plan to run for office, supporters like you have made everything we’ve achieved possible.

That’s as true now as it was on Election Day in 2008.

You’re the reason we reformed a health care system that was broken, progress that means so much to so many. You’re the reason we reined in Wall Street banks that were out of control.

But Barack can’t keep making progress without strong allies in Congress. And now the same people who’ve opposed us at every turn are targeting the folks who voted to make change real. They think we can’t do it again.

    But they’re wrong.

If the folks who I saw in 2008 — those of you who packed up your bags and slept on floors and made calls and talked to voters day after day — are ready to stand with us again, then I’m ready for any challenge that lies ahead.

That’s why we’re asking you to help grow this movement once again.

The plan for this election is based on the lessons we learned two years ago. Our organizers and volunteers are knocking on doors every weekend, making calls every night. Your support will help to fund this work.

Another supporter is asking you to join them today — and has pledged to match whatever you can give.

Please donate $15 or more to help grow this movement before November 2nd:

  23. Poll: Base still backs Obama

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1010/43083.html

President Barack Obama has been hemorrhaging independent voters, but a new Gallup Poll out Monday shows that he still remains a dominant force within the Democratic base.

Several key groups that tend to lean Democratic remain solidly behind the president, and Obama’s staunchest supporters from 2008 remain in his camp.

Ninety-one percent of African-Americans approve of Obama, as do 79 percent of self-identified Democrats and 75 percent of liberals.

Obama remains the preference of young voters, as 57 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds support the president.

A majority of Hispanics, self-identified moderates and those with a postgraduate degree also still approve of the president.

And this is why they’re mad!

  24. Someone Teach Beck Some History

    http://www.boomantribune.com/story/2010/10/4/233627/421

I generally ignore Glenn Beck, but I think I need to respond to his latest outrage. He was trying to say that Obama’s health care reforms are going to basically enslave people by making them paying higher premiums. Then he said this:

The President is exactly right when he said ’slaves sitting around the campfire didn’t know when slavery was going to end, but they knew that it would. And it took a long time to end slavery.’ yes it did. But it also took a long time to start slavery.
And it started small, and it started with seemingly innocent ideas. And then a little court order here, and a court order there and a little regulation here and a little more regulation there. And before we knew it, America had slavery.

It didn’t come over in a ship to begin with, as an evil slave trade. The government began to regulate things because the people needed answers and needed solutions. It started in a court room then it went to the legislatures. That’s how slavery began. And it took a long time to enslave an entire race of people, and convince another race of people that they were somehow or another, less than them. But it can be done.

Even a brief view of the Wikipedia page for the Atlantic Slave Trade will make it obvious that Glenn Beck is very wrong.

In some ways, slavery has always been with us. It still exists in some places, like Sudan. So, it’s kind of strange for Beck to say that slavery began with a court order. But, even when we consider slavery only in the context of Colonial America, Beck doesn’t make any sense. African-American slavery began because African kings paid for European goods by selling their own slaves. Those slaves were paid for with tropical fruits, molasses, rum, cotton, and tobacco, which were sent back to Europe. It was a triangular system of trade. The Europeans sold processed goods and bought agricultural products, the Africans sold manpower and bought processed goods, and the Americans sold agricultural products and bought manpower.

And the Americans only bought African manpower because plentiful and cheap land made it easy for European settlers to move quickly into land ownership and the Native peoples tended to die from Old World diseases when put to work as slaves.

Slavery existed in the New World even before the importation of Africans. And Africans were brought here specifically to be slaves.

What Beck might be referring to is the system that evolved that gradually differentiated African slaves from all other slaves. In the beginning, slaves and indentured servants were able to win their freedom after a period of service. But, over time, African-Americans lost that right in the South of this country. Then white slavery withered away completely, leaving a system in the 19th-Century of exclusively black slavery.

But, regardless, blacks were brought here as slaves in order to be slaves. It’s probably easiest to understand this history by reading about the Haitian Revolution, because it contains all the components of what went on here, but in a very compressed timetable.

  25. Supreme Court Starts New Era With 3 Women On Bench

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/05/supreme-court-starts-new-_n_750408.html#comments

Washington— The Supreme Court began a new era Monday with three women serving together for the first time, Elena Kagan taking her place at the end of the bench and quickly joining in the give-and-take.

In a scene that will repeat itself over the next few months, Kagan left the courtroom while the other justices remained to hear a case in which she will take no part. She has taken herself out of 24 pending cases, including the second of the two argued Monday, because of her work as the Obama administration’s solicitor general prior to joining the court in August.

Opening its new term on the traditional first Monday in October, the court turned down hundreds of appeals, including one from the relatives of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. They are seeking a proper burial for material taken from the World Trade Center site because it could contain the ashes of victims.

The justices also refused to hear several criminal appeals, including one by John and Timothy Rigas, founders of former telecommunications giant Adelphia Communications. They wanted the court to overturn their fraud convictions in connection with Adelphia’s collapse in 2002.

  26. Dana Milbank: Mormon Prophesy Behind Glenn Beck’s Message

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dana-milbank/post_996_b_749750.html

In one of his first appearances on Fox News, Glenn Beck sent a coded message to the nation’s six million Mormons — or at least those Mormons who believe in what the Latter-day Saints call “the White Horse Prophecy.”

“We are at the place where the Constitution hangs in the balance,” Beck told Bill O’Reilly on November 14, 2008, just after President Obama’s election. “I feel the Constitution is hanging in the balance right now, hanging by a thread unless the good Americans wake up.”

The Constitution is hanging by a thread.

Most Americans would have heard this as just another bit of overblown commentary and thought nothing more of it. But to those familiar with the White Horse Prophecy, it was an unmistakable signal.

The phrase is often attributed to the Prophet Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church. Smith is believed to have said in 1840 that when the Constitution hangs by a thread, elders of the Mormon Church will step in — on the proverbial white horse — to save the country.

I see you, Dana Milbank and I’m not buying what you’re selling!

Well….Someone has to say it….Might as well be the black guy. Here we go.
Aside from the Utter ignorance that GB is, lets talk about the MORMONS.

MORMANS taught that blacks were descendants of Cain, Adam and Eve’s son who was banished after murdering his brother Abel, and of Ham, Noah’s son who broke a taboo when he looked at the nude body of his drunken father. In what became known as the “curse of Ham,” Noah condemned to slavery the descendants of Ham’s son Canaan.
Which Bible did they get that from?? Thats right, they made that one up.
Up untill a few years ago they taught that Black was bad.

Justice Elena Kagan a comfortable and active questioner in first case
    By Robert Barnes
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Monday, October 4, 2010; 7:41 PM

Elena Kagan worked behind the scenes at the Supreme Court as a clerk, and stood at the lectern as solicitor general representing the government of the United States.
So it is not surprising that when she took her spot at the end of the mahogany bench Monday as the newest justice, Kagan, 50, seemed right at home.

She waited a respectful period as colleagues asked questions, then dived into a complicated and murky bankruptcy case in which the court’s best option, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. noted, might be to choose the less “absurd” result.

Kagan’s debut, brief as it was, was the highlight of the court’s first day of its 2010-2011 term. Because of her work as solicitor general, Kagan was recused from the court’s second case of the day, and she will be absent more than present during its first two-week session. She will hear only four of 12 cases.

By FRAZIER MOORE, AP Television Writer Frazier Moore, Ap Television Writer – Tue Oct 5, 12:41 am ET
NEW YORK – Jon Stewart gleefully struck back Monday night at the former CNN host who was fired after calling him a bigot.

In his opening spot on “The Daily Show,” Stewart told his Comedy Central audience that, after taping last Thursday’s edition, he had heard Rick Sanchez interviewed on a radio program.

“I think Jon Stewart’s a bigot,” Sanchez was heard declaring in the taped replay.

“Omigod!” Stewart glowed from his anchor desk. “Rick Sanchez knows my name!”

Stewart replayed another excerpt from the radio interview where Sanchez sneered, “I’m so glad that (Stewart) grew up in a suburban middle-class New Jersey home with everything that you could ever imagine.”

The Republican grab for Congress is being funded by a pack of wolves masquerading as a herd of sheep.
How sweet and innocent they seem, these mysterious organizations with names like Americans for Job Security. Who could argue with that? Who wants job insecurity?

It turns out, according to The Post, that an entity called Americans for Job Security has made nearly $7.5 million in “independent” campaign expenditures this year, with 88 percent going to support Republican candidates. Who’s putting up all that money? You’ll never know, because Americans for Job Security — which calls itself a “business association” — doesn’t have to disclose the source of its funding.

Likewise, the American Future Fund has spent $6.8 million on campaigns this year, with every penny of that money benefiting Republicans. The patriotically named group — and, really, who doesn’t want America to have a future? — is based in Iowa and has never before been a big player in the Great Game of campaign finance. Now, suddenly, it has a king’s ransom to throw around.
