Wilson Pickett (March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006) was an American R&B/rock and roll and soul singer and songwriter.
A major figure in the development of American soul music, Pickett recorded over 50 songs which made the US R&B charts, and frequently crossed over to the US Billboard Hot 100. Among his best known hits are “In the Midnight Hour” (which he co-wrote), “Land of 1,000 Dances“, “Mustang Sally“, and “Funky Broadway“.[1]
The impact of Pickett’s songwriting and recording led to his 1991 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[2]

– Republican Tom Emmer failed Monday to convince Minnesota’s highest court that signed polling place rosters must be matched with the number of votes tallied in the state’s undecided race for governor.
In a rapid ruling issued within two hours of a court hearing, justices declined Emmer’s request to order the comparison prior to an automatic recount in the race, which could have led to some ballots being randomly disqualified. Emmer trails Democrat Mark Dayton by 8,770 votes.
The court’s order came with little explanation. Justices said they wanted to get it out quickly “so as not to impede the orderly election process” and would follow up with a detailed opinion later.
Emmer’s team didn’t offer an immediate response to the ruling but said one was coming. Dayton attorney Marc Elias told reporters before the court acted that his client’s lead was “insurmountable absent some kind of evidence that something went very wrong, and we have seen nothing to suggest that.”

Velma Hart, who burst onto the media scene after telling President Obama she was scared about her financial future, has been laid off. Hart was let go as the chief financial officer for Am Vets, a nonprofit Maryland-based veteran services organization.

Velma Hart, Who Questioned Obama’s Policies, Loses Job

Velma Hart, who told President Obama she was “exhausted” of defending him and became the face of disappointed Americans this fall, has lost her job.
In another casualty of a weak national economy, Ms. Hart learned late last week that she’d been laid off as chief financial officer of AmVets, a non-profit veterans service organization based outside of Washington, D.C.
“They called me in on a Friday afternoon,” Ms. Hart told CNBC in an interview on Monday, “and said they had made a decision…we should make that cut.”
Even when she addressed Obama in a September 20 CNBC town hall meeting on the economy, Ms. Hart knew that the recent recession had put her job in danger through its dampening effect on donations, memberships and sponsorships at AmVets. She had hoped to remain on the job to help AmVets weather the financial storm, but instead became one of its casualties.

A spokesman for AmVets confirmed that Ms. Hart’s layoff was “an economic decision that had nothing to do with her job performance.” A White House spokeswoman had no comment.
The painful news caps a roller-coaster autumn for Ms. Hart. Her statement to Mr. Obama at the Town Hall drew immense national media exposure, from networks news programs to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to a profile in her hometown newspaper, The Washington Post.
The Hollywood actor Jamie Foxx even felt the need to rebut Ms. Hart’s comment at a campaign rally for Mr. Obama in Los Angeles last month.
“What’s in my heart is now, even more than I did before, I appreciate what millions of people who are in my condition now have been experiencing for the last two, three, four years,” Ms. Hart said at the kitchen table of her home in Upper Marlboro, MD. “Of course I’m afraid. Everybody’s a little afraid.”
“I don’t take lightly the fact that I know friends who’ve been looking for jobs for two years,” she added. “Could it take me two years to find a job? Wow, that’s a scary proposition for me and my family.”
Ms. Hart said she continues to support Obama, though she worries he’s been hurt by the recent midterm elections. As she and her family cope with her new financial setback, she plans to explore the administration’s mortgage loan-modification program.
This Thanksgiving week, however, the wife and mother of two teenage girls is trying to remain upbeat.
“I’m a data-driven person,” she said. “The data says the economy’s getting better.”
“I want to focus on the positive and be optimistic,” she concluded. “And assume that somehow things will work out, that there’s an opportunity out there with Velma’s name on it that’s right around the corner.”

My oldest daughter was out of work for 9 months, she was engaged. Her fiance worked. They had saved and were prepared for the challenges of going from 2 incomes to 1. She’s now working. She didn’t run around with a mic in her face complaining about how exhausted she was defending the POTUS.
Again, the media is latching on to this story for nefarious reason. I don’t trust them or Velma Hart. Since when does a black woman’s job woes matter to whites?
GOPer’s MN-GOV Vote Complaint Leans On Witnesses With GOP Ties
The Republican Party of Minnesota and Tom Emmer’s gubernatorial campaign have filed a petition with the state’s Supreme Court, alleging that some election judges did not follow the rules when tallying votes. Emmer’s argument is that improper record-keeping resulted in extra votes being counted, and he wants the matter addressed before the state’s canvassing board certifies the results. But the Minnesota Independent reports that the “vast majority” of the witnesses in the complaint have ties to the Republican Party or the Tea Party movement.
Democrat Mark Dayton leads Emmer by about 8,700 votes, which is close enough to trigger an automatic recount. The canvassing board is scheduled to certify the results on November 23, with a recount slated to begin November 29.
Here’s a list of the witnesses identified by the Independent:
•Joel Burns: Co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots of the Twin Cities. Campaign Chair for Republican Deanna Boss who ran for the state House in Minneapolis.
•John Larkin: Founder of Tea Party group The 56 Club.
•Glydewell Burdick: Co-chair of the Senate District 44 Republicans in the Golden Valley area. Member of the Republican Party of Minnesota Health Care Coalition
•Diana Bratlie: Delegate to the 2008 Republican National Convention. Paid researcher for Rep. John Kline’s re-election campaign in 2008.
•Albin Dittli: Attended a state GOP convention in 2005.
A number of other witnesses have given money to Republican candidates. The Independent reports that only two of the witnesses have no connection to the GOP.
“What this does is enhance the suspicion that this is really based on political factors,” Professor David Schultz of Hamline University told the Independent.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Supreme Court is moving quickly to address the complaint. It has requested all related filings by submitted by 4 p.m. Friday, and will hear oral arguments, if necessary, on Monday.

Q&A with OpenDNS: We’re being blocked, FCC should act on net neutrality

As the Federal Communications Commission grapples with the timing of a net neutrality vote and Republican lawmakers demand the agency drop it, companies like OpenDNS fear the issue is getting mired in politics.
And that could crush startups like them, says OpenDNS founder David Ulevitch. He says the San Francisco domain name service is already being blocked by Verizon Wireless. He fears other Internet service providers trying to compete with it could do the same. update: A Verizon Wireless spokeswoman said Monday its network engineers “see no issue from our end.”
Since it launched with a couple million dollars in angel investment four years ago, OpenDNS has attracted 20 million customers – consumers and businesses such as Staples, Century 21 and Fuji Film – who prefer the service’s domain name look-up service to that of their Internet service provider. Why? Ulevitch says the company is able to more quickly translate Web page addresses like http://www.washingtonpost.com to The Post’s IP address to serve up the site to users. Warren Buffett Tells ABC Rich People Should Pay Higher Taxes

Billionaire Warren Buffett said that rich people should pay more in taxes and that Bush-era tax cuts for top earners should be allowed to expire at the end of December.
“If anything, taxes for the lower and middle class and maybe even the upper middle class should even probably be cut further,” Buffett said in an interview with ABC’s “This Week With Christiane Amanpour” that is scheduled to air on Nov. 28. “But I think that people at the high end — people like myself — should be paying a lot more in taxes. We have it better than we’ve ever had it.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to take up President Barack Obama’s plan to extend some of the tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush when the House returns after Thanksgiving. The legislation would retain lower tax rates and increased credits that apply only to the first $250,000 of a married couple’s gross income or $200,000 of a single person’s.

U.S. security rethinking airline screening: Pistole

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. security officials will rethink the invasive airline passenger screening procedures that have caused a public uproar on the eve of the busy U.S. holiday travel season, Transportation Security Administrator John Pistole said on Monday.
“We’re going to look at how can we do the most effective screening in the least invasive way knowing that there’s always a trade-off between security and privacy,” he told NBC’s Today show while making the rounds on U.S. breakfast television.
But on CNN Pistole said, “In the short-term there will not be any changes.”
Pistole’s comments appeared to row back from the position he stated in a Sunday television interview in which he said the TSA had no plans to back away from the procedures.
