Celebrate Me Home is the debut solo album from Kenny Loggins, released in 1976. The album, Loggins’ first since splitting from Loggins and Messina, represents a slight move away from the folk-rock leanings of his previous recordings towards a more polished, soft rock sound.
Despite featuring production by famed Billy Joel collaborator Phil Ramone and jazz keyboardist Bob James, Celebrate Me Home (eventually certified platinum by the RIAA) failed to make a significant impact on the Billboard album charts, peaking at number 27. Loggins would experience greater commercial and chart success with his next album release, Nightwatch.

WASHINGTON — The 1971 book Yazoo: Integration in a Deep-Southern Town by journalist Willie Morris paints a far more complicated picture of Yazoo City’s desegregation than Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) portrayed, perhaps exemplified by the attitudes of Jeppie Barbour, Haley’s older brother who was elected mayor in 1968.
As Andrew Ferguson noted in his Weekly Standard profile of Barbour, Jeppie, at the age of just 27, “won on a platform that included the revitalization of downtown, which already was showing signs of decay as stores closed or moved out to the new strip malls opening on the outskirts.” Haley was in his third year at the University of Mississippi in 1968 and volunteered on his brother’s campaign.
Jeppie was upset about African-American residents of Yazoo boycotting local white-owned businesses and taking charge of their own affairs during the civil rights era. From Morris’ book:
We were having some fish for lunch in the back room at Danrie’s, and Jeppie complained about the Negro boycott. “South Main Street’s dryin’ up,” he said, and listed the stores that had gone out of business, including one drugstore hit hardest “because it specialized in chitlin’ sandwiches and two-dollar pistols.” The Negro leaders in charge now “are completely irresponsible. They’re determined to destroy the whites economically. That’s totally unreasonable. Unfortunately they’ve got the support of the colored community now.” […]

Lt. Dan Choi, GetEQUAL Activist Robin McGehee Invited to White House for ‘DADT’ Repeal Signing

GetEQUAL activist Robin McGehee tweeted a short time ago that she and Lt. Dan Choi have received invites to the White House for the signing of the ‘DADT’ repeal bill.
Obama plans to sign the bill on Wednesday morning.
McGehee and Choi have been involved in several anti-DADT acts of civil disobedience leading to their arrests, most notably after chaining themselves to the White House fence.
In a statement regarding the measure’s repeal, posted today at the Huffington Post, Choi speaks to Obama directly:
“President Obama, you are not off the hook. The compromise bill passed today puts the moral imperative squarely on your desk. Sign an executive order instituting a full non-discrimination policy throughout the military. If you do not, if you drag your feet and politicize this with your theoretical calculations as you have these past two years, you will be guilty of abetting those who loudly proclaim homophobia from their platforms and pulpits. Provide them no shelter or safe haven. Institute justice now.”

Trouble over $11 million Christmas tree December 20, 2010
A luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi which unveiled a Christmas tree decorated with jewels valued at $US11 million has decided to put the record straight against criticism of having gone over the top.
The Emirates Palace hotel said it regretted “attempts to overload the tradition followed by most hotels in the country”, in a statement quoted in Gulf News on Sunday.
“Putting the Christmas tree… is a tradition meant to share in celebrating occasions guests hold while they are away from their home countries and families,” said the hotel in the United Arab Emirates capital.

WASHINGTON — After a monthslong blockade, Senate Republicans have agreed to let at least 19 of President Barack Obama’s non-controversial judicial nominees win confirmation in the waning days of the congressional session in exchange for a commitment by Democrats not to seek votes on four others, according to officials familiar with the deal.
Among the four is Goodwin Liu, a law school dean seen as a potential future Supreme Court pick, whose current nomination to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has sparked strong criticism from Republicans.
As part of the arrangement, the Senate has approved 10 judges in the past few days without a single dissenting vote. One of them, Albert Diaz, had been awaiting confirmation to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., since clearing the Judiciary Committee in January.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said recently that if the upcoming 112th Congress fails to address comprehensive immigration reform, it will be the result of the GOP’s insufficient “mental capacity.”
During an interview with the New York Times, Reid did a little forecasting about the legislative limits of the next Congress.
For his part, Mr. Reid predicted, “We’ll get some things done,” naming comprehensive immigration legislation as one possibility.
If Republicans’ vulnerability among Hispanic voters does not persuade them to compromise, he noted, “they have real problems with their mental capacity.”

On Saturday, December 18, 2010, the US Senate passed the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010 by a 65-31 margin, clearing the way for President Obama to fulfill a promise that many have seen as too long in coming. While the White House has maintained all along that a legislative repeal was the only “durable solution,” many, myself included, felt that the President should have put a moratorium on DADT discharges until such a repeal could be enacted.
Had he done so, however, it’s very likely that the President would not, now, be poised to sign that legislative repeal into law.
The first time I asked Press Secretary Robert Gibbs about DADT was way back in May of 2009, and like many opponents of the Clinton-era compromise on gays and lesbians serving in the military, felt that a decisive act by the President would lead to a quicker repeal of the law. Framing DADT as a national security risk, I asked Gibbs why the President would block the release of detainee abuse photos, but not the discharges of otherwise qualified gay soldiers. My fellow reporters and I would come to know Gibbs’ response nearly by heart, as he would repeat it (with only minor variations) again and again in the following weeks and months:

Sarah Palin took a shot at Michelle Obama during Sunday’s episode of her reality TV show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” jabbing the first lady’s anti-obesity campaign for attempting to deprive Americans of dessert.
While searching for s’mores ingredients on a family camping trip, Palin remarked:
“Where are the s’mores ingredients? This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert.”
Michelle Obama has been a key proponent of an initiative to improve children’s health by encouraging better diets and sufficient exercise. In May she announced her “Let’s Move” program, which promoted dessert alternatives, among other dietary suggestions.
The Associated Press reported at the time:
One in 3 American children is overweight or obese, putting them at higher risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other illnesses. Obesity is even more prevalent among black and Hispanic children. Some public health experts say today’s children are on track to live shorter lives than their parents.
But Palin has maintained that Obama’s effort to combat child obesity — which was recently aided by the passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act — is one that seeks to take away “God-given rights to make our own decisions.” Some have since slammed that comment as Palin’s demanding that Americans cling to their “God-Given right to be fat.”
During an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s radio program last month, Palin complained:
“Instead of a government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us according to some politician or politician’s wife priorities, just leave us alone, get off our back.”
What parent, pray tell, doesn’t want their kids to eat healthy? No parent in their right mind would refuse their kids healthy foods. Is Palin that fking ignorant?
