Diamond Rio is an American country music band formed in 1984 in Nashville, Tennessee. Since its foundation, the group has comprised the same six members: Gene Johnson (mandolin, guitar, fiddle, tenor vocals), Jimmy Olander (lead guitar, Dobro, Danelectro, banjo), Brian Prout (drums), Marty Roe (lead vocals), Dan Truman (keyboards, organ, synthesizer), and Dana Williams (bass guitar, baritone vocals).
Diamond Rio was signed to Arista Records in 1988. Due to a series of health issues affecting three of its members, however, the band did not make its debut until 1991, with the release of the single “Meet in the Middle“. It reached Number One on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts, making Diamond Rio the first country music group in history to reach Number One with a debut single. “Meet in the Middle” was followed by thirty-two more chart singles throughout the band’s career, including four more Number Ones: “How Your Love Makes Me Feel” (1997), “One More Day” (2001), “Beautiful Mess” (2002), and “I Believe” (2003).

Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot on Saturday morning while hosting an event outside of a Tucson grocery store, according to local news reports.
National Public Radio reported Saturday that Giffords, who in November narrowly won re-election to a third term, was hosting her first “Congress on Your Corner” event when a gunman ran up and began shooting.
According to a local news report, Giffords was shot in the head at point-blank range. She was taken to University Medical Center in Tucscon; her condition was not immediately known.

Ed Schultz And His Listeners Are Predictably Uneasy About Obama/O’Reilly Chat

MSNBC host Ed Schultz is certainly no stranger to calling out President Obama for not going on his program, and it seems every time the president interacts with Fox News, the progressive commentator begins the see red. The President’s upcoming chat with Bill O’Reilly on Super Bowl Sunday was no different, though, rather than taking the hard line against the President this time, Schultz merely expressed concern that there was no “upside” to the broadcast, because “you can’t trust ‘em.”
The shift from disappointment to concern meant Schultz didn’t touch the issue of loyalty to the base explicitly, though he did let his radio listeners speak for him, and they were not happy, using words like “stupid” and “degrading” to describe the interview, with one dejected listener accusing President Obama of “continually abandoning the left.” For Schultz, though, this was not the problem but, rather, the fact that, with a “partisan broadcaster,” the President was not going to be able to express himself appropriately. During the President’s last interview on Fox News, Schultz argued, “he was treated rudely and could hardly get a word in,” that courtesy of interviewer Bret Baier.
Then Schultz introduced a new element to his show that made the broadcast all the more colorful– someone who wholeheartedly disagreed. NY PIX commentator Lionel came up to bat for the President– and Bill O’Reilly– describing President Obama as Zeus and noting that he must give the interview to the network broadcasting the Super Bowl, as he did last time. He called the President’s move “brilliant,” and of O’Reilly noted that “of the Fox News folks, the guy you’re probably going to get the most fair and balanced… is Bill O’Reilly.”
Schultz didn’t seemed convinced, though he pledged his presidential vote to Lionel after the latter promised that, if he were president, “I would’ve gone on The Ed Show, but that’s just me.”

For two years conservatives indulged themselves in unheard-of dogwhistle campaigns against this young African-American President while enlightened liberals pointed it out in a mild, somewhat derisive fashion but with little outrage. Now, in the aftermath of the midterm ‘shellacking’, a New Confederacy is rising with the assistance of the tea party and John Birchers, and it’s getting enough traction in Congress to do real damage.The scary part? It’s working.
Fact: We are NOT living in a post-racial society. Not on the liberal side, and not on the conservative side.
As nice as it is to think that we’ve transcended race now that we have a smart, well-educated mixed-race President, we haven’t at all. Racial divides are bigger and nastier than ever. The right exploits them; the left tries to ignore them. But they exist. Dave and John wrote about this in their book “Over the Cliff: How Obama’s Election Drove the American Right Insane”. The chapter on Mad Hatters and March Hares describes the series of dog whistles that birthed today’s Tea party. It’s not news to anyone paying attention, but it carries a subliminal and destructive message to those who are not.
Will Bunch hit on the same themes in his latest book, “The Backlash”, too. When I asked him directly about race as a motivating factor, he answered with this:
Race is a huge motivator. There’s been a lot of talk in the early reviews about ways in which “The Backlash” is perhaps understanding of the right-wing rank and file, but I want to be clear — racism of various stripes is a huge motivator, which I find disturbing and not excusable.
A big driver of the movement is cultural factors — people are worried about a future in which America is a “non-white majority” nation, and media and pols are exploiting that fear. Barack Obama was the exclamation mark — that change was here in 2008 and not in 2050 when whites are predicted to be a minority.

‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska’: one and done? You betcha, says one report.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the former half-term governor of Alaska turned reality TV caribou murderer Sarah Palin will not see her TLC program, ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska,’ return to the air for a second season.
Reasons are unclear, but insiders give two theories: one, committing to a second season could show signs that she’s not committed to running for President in 2012; and two, she fears that if she does run, TLC would have to give equal air time to her would-be opponents for the Presidency.
If Palin’s show does indeed end after one season, Sunday’s season finale will also serve as the last episode of the series.
Palin’s show generated plenty of controversy — and plenty of ratings — this season. In her first episode, she drew a TLC-record breaking five million viewers, only to see that number fall 40% to three million for her second episode.
She’s dipped her toe in conventional reality show waters, hosting Kate Gosselin and her eight children on an ill-fated camping trip, and more controversially, has hunted in a number of episodes.
Her shooting expeditions have prompted outrage among many; in early December, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin wrote a scathing critique of Palin’s televised moose shooting for The Huffington Post, saying in part, “I don’t watch snuff films and you make them. You weren’t killing that animal for food or shelter or even fashion, you were killing it for fun. You enjoy killing animals.”

Consider the extremes. President Obama is redesigning his administration to make it even friendlier toward big business and the megabanks, which is to say the rich, who flourish no matter what is going on with the economy in this country. (They flourish even when they’re hard at work destroying the economy.) Meanwhile, we hear not a word — not so much as a peep — about the poor, whose ranks are spreading like a wildfire in a drought.
The politicians and the media behave as if the poor don’t exist. But with jobs still absurdly scarce and the bottom falling out of the middle class, the poor are becoming an ever more significant and increasingly desperate segment of the population.
How do you imagine a family of four would live if its annual income was $11,000 or less?
During a conversation I had this week with Peter Edelman, a professor at Georgetown University Law Center and a longtime expert on issues related to poverty, he pointed out that the number of people in that tragically dismal category has grown to more than 17 million. These are the folks trying to make it on incomes below half of the official poverty line, which is $22,000 annually for a family of four.

With the departure of Robert Gibbs, senior administration officials are expanding their search for a new White House press secretary to include a dangerous breed: working journalists.
Advisers have been compiling a fairly predictable list of Democratic spokesmen who could assume the “podium job,” as it’s known. There are internal front-runners – Vice President Biden’s communications director, Jay Carney, and deputy press secretary Bill Burton are at the top of the list – and other candidates, including another deputy, Josh Earnest, whom Gibbs asked to be added for consideration. A more senior White House adviser, Stephanie Cutter, had been asked to apply but declined, and she is now involved in the search process. There are a number of external contenders, as well, including Democratic operative Karen Finney, a frequent paid television commentator.
But further down the wish list that officials have compiled so far are some reporters, mainly ones who appear on television, people involved in the process said. Officials acknowledge it is a long shot that one of them will make the final cut: There are logistical considerations, such as contracts, and the all-important question of trust. But the mere fact that working journalists are being discussed for a job so visible is a sign of change within a White House that has typically been allergic to it.
Overall, the list of candidates to succeed Gibbs has expanded since William Daley was announced as the incoming chief of staff, several people familiar with the process said. Among the most pressing goals: including candidates who can repair relations with the White House press corps, which suffered under Gibbs, and to at least consider a woman to balance the perception of an administration that is overwhelmingly male.
The problem, according to several who are familiar with the search, is that the talent pool is extremely shallow.

For southern Sudan, a historic vote for independence

JUBA, SUDAN – One of Alfred Lado’s earliest memories is from Jan. 1, 1956. He can be that specific because it was the date that Sudan got its independence from British colonial rule. A child at the time, he did not know the significance of the event, but on that day his brother told him he would be going to school for the first time.
The prospect of education excited Lado and continues to 55 years later as he sits in the library at Juba University, in the capital of southern Sudan, on the eve of another historic moment. On Sunday, he and millions of other southern Sudanese will vote on whether they want to become an independent nation, after decades of struggle and a bloody civil war.
The war between rebels in the primarily Christian and animist south against successive governments ruling from Khartoum in the predominantly Arab and Muslim north lasted almost the entire span of Lado’s life.
“All that time we never knew that some day like this would come,” he said.

Sarah Palin came to the conclusion Friday that Obama’s willingness to raise the debt ceiling could only be interpreted as a sign that he was “hell-bent on weakening America,” because he had before noted that such actions should be avoided.
“He has told us back in March of 06, he told us that it weakens America domestically and internationally to raise debt, right, to raise the debt ceiling,” Palin told Laura Ingraham on her radio show. “And he said it is a sign of failed leadership to support raising the debt ceiling.”
Palin then contended that Obama was “purposefully weakening America because he understood that debt weakens America.”
Pressed by Ingraham further about this allegation, Palin seemed to claim that it was the only possible explanation, but neglected to give any further insight into a potential motive for why Obama would be “weakening” the nation.
