Shirley Ann Caesar (born October 13, 1938, Durham, North Carolina) is an American Gospel music singer, songwriter and recording artist whose career has spanned six decades. A multi-award winning artist, with eleven Grammy Awards and seven Dove Awardsto her credit, she is known as “First Lady of gospel”.
Beginning recording at the age of 13 in 1951,[1] Shirley Caesar has released over forty albums, exploring her gift and spreading messages of faith. She has participated in over 16 compilations and three gospel musicals, Mama I Want to Sing, Sing: Mama 2 and Born to Sing: Mama 3.
Now That David Koch Is Gone From NIH Cancer Board, Formaldehyde Is Finally Classified As A Carcinogen
What’s that word they use for a society where the group of those with money and power are above the law? Oh, that’s right: Oligarchy! While this regulatory capture continued, how many of us filled up our homes with these toxic products? Via Think Progress:
Large manufacturers and chemical producers have lobbied ferociously to stop the National Institutes of Health from classifying formaldehyde as a carcinogen. A wide body of research has linked the chemical to cancer, but industrial polluters have stymied regulators from action.
Last year, the New Yorker’s Jane Mayer reported that billionaire David Koch, whose company Georgia Pacific (a subsidiary of Koch Industries) is one of the country’s top producers of formaldehyde, was appointed to the NIH cancer board at a time when the NIH delayed action on the chemical. The news was met with protests from environmental groups. Faced with mounting pressure from Greenpeace and the scientific community, Koch offered an early resignation from the board in October.
Yesterday, the NIH finally handed down a report officially classifying formaldehyde as a carcinogen:
Government scientists listed formaldehyde as a carcinogen, and said it is found in worrisome quantities in plywood, particle board, mortuaries and hair salons. They also said that styrene, which is used in boats, bathtubs and in disposable foam plastic cups and plates, may cause cancer but is generally found in such low levels in consumer products that risks are low. Frequent and intense exposures in manufacturing plants are far more worrisome than the intermittent contact that most consumers have, but government scientists said that consumers should still avoid contact with formaldehyde and styrene along with six other chemicals that were added Friday to the government’s official Report on Carcinogens. Its release was delayed for years because of intense lobbying from the chemical industry, which disputed its findings.
An investigation by ProPublica found that Sens. David Vitter (R-LA) and James Inhofe (R-OK) had used their power to add years of delay to the report. The piece linked Vitter to lobbying from Koch’s Georgia Pacific company, which has plywood plants in Louisiana.
I guess now we know why Republicans weren’t pushing David Vitter to resign.

Marco Rubio tricked the Tea Party into thinking he was part of the clan

I need to thank Marco Rubio. He really stuck it to the Tea Party. He played those fools into voting for him. He had been keeping up appearances until early May, when he was a guest on NBC’s Meet the Press, voicing support for Rep. Paul Ryan’s plan to slash $500 million from Medicare.
Rubio told host David Gregory: “I will support any plan that saves Medicare, doesn’t impact seniors, and doesn’t hurt economic growth. The Ryan plan does that.”
But entering his sixth month on Capitol Hill, the West Miami Cuban-American has begun to distance himself from the folks who want to “take back America.” Some hard-core Tea Partiers are thinking about revoking Rubio’s membership in the clan. His campaign rhetoric promised a tough stance on immigration, but now he’s waffling. They are not happy.
Despite claiming he will vote against the Dream Act, which would create a path to citizenship for some children of illegal immigrants, he hasn’t pushed for other radical immigration reforms proposed by the Tea Party, whose members are starting to take notice. Sarasota Tea Party activist George Fuller recently told the Miami Herald: “He wants to have it both ways. We’re zeroing in on him like a laser.”
I think it’s hilarious that Rubio used the Tea Party to get elected when he knew damn well he couldn’t mess with immigration law. They’ll run his ass out of Miami. He made those Tea Party people feel like he was down with them, but he was really a wolf in sheep’s clothing. After they made him the first Cuban to get a white robe and hood, Rubio is turning his back on the Aryan nation.
The Tea Party’s number one priority is kicking all the people who are not a perfect shade of white out of the country. That is what Rubio signed up for. Now he’s flip-flopping, which makes me wonder:
Is it voter fraud when you trick people into believing you are a member of their party to win their votes?

It’s the Health Care Costs, Stupid
I’ve already written about Joe Lieberman’s very bad, no good idea of raising the Medicare eligibility age. Austin Frakt and Aaron Carroll show that it’s even worse than I thought: Americans near 65 who don’t have good health insurance delay needed treatment, causing a bulge in Medicare costs when they hit the magic age, and the same phenomenon would get even worse, so this might not even save money.
The larger point is that we don’t have a Medicare problem, we have a health care cost problem. And Medicare actually does a better job of controlling costs than private insurers — not remotely good enough, but better.
If you look at Medicare in isolation, the cost rise looks terrible, because it is:
If Medicare costs had risen as fast as private insurance premiums, it would cost around 40 percent more than it does. If private insurers had done as well as Medicare at controlling costs, insurance would be a lot cheaper.
It’s a mystery why anyone claims that shifting more people into private insurance is a good idea. Actually, no, it isn’t a mystery; it’s an outrage.

Bachmann Calls For Huge Corporate Tax Cut Alongside Tax Increase For The Working Poor

Several of the 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls have laid out economic platforms that would include huge cuts in the corporate tax rate. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) called for lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent, while former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) went a step further, calling for a cut to 15 percent.
In an interview published today by the Wall Street Journal, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) — who is toying with a presidential run herself — decided to one-up both Romney and Pawlenty, calling for a reduction in the corporate tax rate to 9 percent. Adding insult to injury, Bachmann wants to pair that huge tax cut with giant tax reductions for the rich, as well as a tax increase on the working poor:
“In my perfect world,” she explains, “we’d take the 35% corporate tax rate down to nine so that we’re the most competitive in the industrialized world. Zero out capital gains. Zero out the alternative minimum tax. Zero out the death tax.” […]
Her main goal is to get tax rates down with a broad-based income tax that everyone pays and that “gets rid of all the deductions.” A system in which 47% of Americans don’t pay any tax is ruinous for a democracy, she says, “because there is no tie to the government benefits that people demand. I think everyone should have to pay something.”
Let’s take these one at a time. First, cutting the corporate tax rate to 9 percent — a reduction about two and a half times larger than that called for in the radical House Republican budget — would cost more than $2 trillion over ten years. (The Tax Policy Center estimated that a 10 point reduction in the corporate tax rate would cost about $915 billion.)
Second, zeroing out the capital gains tax and the estate tax would overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy, as about 68 percent of capital gains taxes are paid by the richest one percent of the country, and fewer than the richest one quarter of one percent pay the estate tax.
Finally, Bachmann implies that she would raise taxes on those Americans who earn too little to have any income tax liability. (It’s simply not true that they pay nothing, as Bachmann seems to believe, since those who have no income tax liability still pay payroll taxes and any state and local taxes.)
The reason so much of the income tax liability has become concentrated at the top of the income scale is because over the last few decades income inequality has skyrocketed. The richest one percent of the country currently earn nearly one quarter of the income, and therefore pay the lion’s share of the income tax. Bachmann would raise taxes on those who have seen their incomes stagnate or even drop over the last ten years, even as she cuts taxes on the ultra-wealthy.

Fighter jets intercept small plane near Camp David

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — Fighter jets on Saturday afternoon intercepted a small plane near Camp David in Maryland, where U.S. President Barack Obama is spending the weekend.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said two F-15 fighter jets out of Jacksonville International Airport in Florida were alerted as a small Beechcraft Bonanza remained out of radio contact while near restricted airspace over Camp David, the country retreat of the president.
The fighter jets intercepted the small aircraft at around 3.25 p.m. EDT when it was about 11 miles (17.7 kilometers) from Camp David. “[The jets] escorted the plane out of the area and it landed at Hagerstown, Md., without incident,” NORAD said in a statement.
The statement gave no other details, but there was no indication that the plane had approached Camp David on purpose. Obama and the First Family arrived at Camp David on Friday, and are spending the weekend at the retreat.
In mid-April, NORAD scrambled two F-16 fighter jets when a small aircraft entered restricted airspace in Washington, D.C. The fighter jets escorted the aircraft until the plane left the area.
NORAD is tasked to prevent air attacks against North America and safeguard the sovereign airspaces of the United States and Canada by responding to unknown, unwanted and unauthorized air activity approaching and operating within these airspaces, and provide aerospace and maritime warning for North America. It is allowed to monitor, shadow, divert from flight path, direct to land and destroy targets which are deemed to be a security threat to North America.

U.S. Underwrites Internet Detour Around Censors

The Obama administration is leading a global effort to deploy “shadow” Internet and mobile phone systems that dissidents can use to undermine repressive governments that seek to silence them by censoring or shutting down telecommunications networks.
The effort includes secretive projects to create independent cellphone networks inside foreign countries, as well as one operation out of a spy novel in a fifth-floor shop on L Street in Washington, where a group of young entrepreneurs who look as if they could be in a garage band are fitting deceptively innocent-looking hardware into a prototype “Internet in a suitcase.”
Financed with a $2 million State Department grant, the suitcase could be secreted across a border and quickly set up to allow wireless communication over a wide area with a link to the global Internet.
The American effort, revealed in dozens of interviews, planning documents and classified diplomatic cables obtained by The New York Times, ranges in scale, cost and sophistication.

.Are Republicans Intentionally Sabotaging Economy For Political Gain?

..Corporate board members, financial advisers, and other professionals are bound by a principle called “fiduciary duty,” in which they are required to act in the best interests of the clients or companies they are serving.
As an American citizen, I would think–or at least hope–that elected government representatives would be bound by a similar principle–that they would put the country’s interests firsts, even if those interests conflicted with their personal desire to gain more power or get re-elected.
My colleague Dan Gross, however, who has covered Washington for two decades, thinks that this principle–if it ever existed–has been thrown out the window.
Basically, Dan argues, Republicans are doing everything they can to ensure that the economy remains a mess when it comes time for the 2012 election. The Republican hope here, Dan explains, is that Americans will vote with their wallets in 2012–and, in so doing, vote more Democrats out of office.
Now, there’s no question that voters do vote with their wallets: The deteriorating economy in 2008 helped President Obama get elected. And there’s nothing wrong with stumping for policies that you honestly believe will help the country over the long term, even if you think they will cause some short-term pain.
But there’s a big difference between that and intentionally doing things that will sabotage the economy over the next 12 months just to influence the next election.
If this is actually what some Republicans are doing, Americans of both parties should be outraged. The first loyalty of any elected representative should be acting in the best interests of the country., and advocating policies that you know will hurt the country–or stonewalling ones that will help it–is a gross dereliction of professional and civic responsibility.
There should not have to be a legal principle like “fiduciary duty” that requires legislators to act in the best interests of the country. But if Dan’s right, it sounds like there may need to be.

I counted three bits of racial code in those few sentences, which isn’t bad. The film reference was nicely done, although the Fox audience probably think he is referring to Bernie Mac.
Anyone who thought it was a victory that Glenn Beck was leaving is sadly deluded. Glenn Beck was shown the door because he outlived his usefulness, and the wingnut bench is very, very deep. Bolling and others can be counted on to step up to the plate and churn out the bile until they, too, become too toxic or go just a little bit too far over whatever line Ailes has, and they’ll be replaced with some other asshole just as bad.
