Here, President Obama calls the family of the hostage just rescued by Seal Team Six. In just minutes, he would face a joint session of Congress and the nation to deliver the State of the Union address.
As far as the significance of the imagery, if you get it, you get it. Let’s just say this is an iconic photograph for African Americans. I’ll leave it there.

Battered Sen. John Kerry Injured in Hockey Game, Honors Bruins at White House
Hockey is a rough sport; just ask Senator John Kerry, D-Mass.
The senator was attending a ceremony for his hometown hockey team, the Boston Bruins, at the White House today when he publicly debuted the remnants of his own hockey injury.
Kerry appeared to have two black eyes and a swollen nose. His senate office said the black and blue was caused by a nose injury during a hockey game the senator participated in recently.
“He’s totally fine,” Kerry spokeswoman Whitney Smith told ABC News, “Very ironically he busted his nose recently playing ice hockey, so the Bruins can certainly relate.”
Hockey is a favorite sport of Senator Kerry’s and he plays often. The Bruins were being honored in the East Room by President Obama for winning the Stanley Cup last June.

The State of the Union address drinking game aside, the most enjoyable SOTU spectator sport is watching the reactions and fidgeting of the various characters who get face time during the telecast. Vice President Joe Biden, battling a cold, rubbed his nose a lot. Speaker of the House John Boehner’s most memorable moment occurred when he wiped his lips with his finger. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, struggling mightily to remain stoic but also clap when the prevailing sentiment moved him to do so, provided some animated gif-worthy moments.
Obama said: “It’s time to stop rewarding businesses that ship jobs overseas, and start rewarding companies that create jobs right here in America. Send me these tax reforms, and I’ll sign them right away.”
Obama said: “Right now, our most immediate priority is stopping a tax hike on 160 million working Americans while the recovery is still fragile …”
Obama said: “… people cannot afford losing $40 out of each paycheck this year. There are plenty of ways to get this done. So let’s agree right here, right now: No side issues. No drama.”
Obama said: “Pass the payroll tax cut without delay.”

Eric Cantor, House Minority Whip: Betting Against America?

Eric Cantor’s financial disclosures reveal that he bets against U.S. Treasury bonds.
[Cantor], the Republican whip in the House of Representatives, bought up to $15,000 in shares of ProShares Trust Ultrashort 20+ Year Treasury ETF last December, according to his 2009 financial disclosure statement. The exchange-traded fund takes a short position in long-dated government bonds. In effect, it is a bet against U.S. government bonds — and perhaps on inflation in the future.
