Michael Rose (born 11 July 1957) is a Grammy award winning reggae singer from Jamaica. Possessing a wide-ranged voice, Rose would regularly meet in Kingston with singers, musicians, writers, and producers such as Dennis Brown, Big Youth, The Wailers, Gregory Isaacs, Sly and Robbie, and others.
Rose started his recording career as a solo artist for record producers Yabby You and Niney the Observer. He joined Black Uhuru in 1977 after the departure of Don Carlos and Garth Dennis. He led them to international success in the early 1980s, having written most of their popular material. They won the first-ever Grammy Award for reggae in 1985 for the album Anthem,[2] with the hallmark voice of Rose in the forefront.
The GOP candidates don’t see their racial rhetoric as offensive. You got a problem with that?

Colorblind racism is the new normal in American conservative political thought. Well after the election of the nation’s first African-American president, in 2012 Republican candidates are using egregious signals and dog whistles to incite racial divisiveness as an effective tool for political gain. But when confronted about the nature of their offensive rhetoric, the answer is either an innocuous denial or dismissive retort.
It is curious that people bold enough to make outlandish racial claims never admit guilt or receive a proverbial trial and conviction by the greater populace. Paul Rosenberg, a political contributor to Al-Jazeera, recently explained that this curious phenomenon of “racism without racists” has become de facto in today’s political discourse and is best described as “colorblind racism.”
First explored in the book Racism Without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in the United States by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, a professor of sociology at Duke University, the concept explains much of the Republican strategy to defeat Barack Obama, using race as a wedge issue. Bonilla-Silva defined colorblind racism as a racial ideology that expresses itself in seemingly nonracial terms. As such, it is most practiced by people who never see themselves outside their own myopic worldview.
Last week’s Fox News debate prior to the South Carolina Republican primary was an excellent example of the hubris inherent in today’s racially charged, conservative environment.
All the more offensive was the fact that this debate took place on the national holiday celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. As Michael Keegan explained in the Huffington Post, “What could have been an opportunity for the candidates to express their support for the myriad advances of the civil rights movement and to address the real challenges that remain, instead turned into a mess of racially charged attacks on African Americans, immigrants and the poor.”
Newt Gingrich — the worst offender — doubled down on his prior attacks. When asked by Juan Williams, the lone African-American Fox News moderator, about calling Barack Obama the greatest “food stamp president” and his insistence that he would “talk about why the African-American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps,” Gingrich played to the bloodthirsty audience.
“Can’t you see that this is viewed, at a minimum, as insulting to all Americans, but particularly to black Americans?” Williams asked.
“No,” Gingrich replied. “No, I don’t see that at all.”

The Return Of Queen Esther
On the one side, ladies and gentlemen, Ann Coulter, Matt Drudge, and Elliott Abrams. On the other, Sarah Palin, Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh. And Abrams’ Drudge-hyped claim that Newt was once a Reagan-basher seems to have been the final straw. After all, what is this GOP election in 2011 all about if not replaying the fantasy of 1980 – without Reagan and without high inflation and without Carter? Putting Romney before Gingrich as the Reagan heir was just a mite too much for the Newties.
Palin’s Facebook screed is a classic of the backlash genre. For her, all mainstream media is the same – which means Brian Ross and National Review are now in cahoots. And she is trying to reframe the race as one between the Tea Party base and the Republican Establishment. Somehow, a former Speaker who called the Ryan plan “right-wing social engineering” and pioneered the individual healthcare mandate is now the Tea Party insurgent. But this was never about issues; it was about identity and class. And that’s what makes it so dangerous for the GOP. Money quote:
Now, I respect Governor Romney and his success. But there are serious concerns about his record and whether as a politician he consistently applied conservative principles and how this impacts the agenda moving forward. The questions need answers now. That is why this primary should not be rushed to an end. We need to vet this.
Pundits in the Beltway are gleefully proclaiming that this primary race is over after Florida, despite 46 states still not having chimed in. Well, perhaps it’s possible that it will come to a speedy end in just four days; but with these questions left unanswered, it will not have come to a satisfactory conclusion. Without this necessary vetting process, the unanswered question of Governor Romney’s conservative bona fides and the unanswered and false attacks on Newt Gingrich will hang in the air to demoralize many in the electorate. The Tea Party grassroots will certainly feel disenfranchised and disenchanted with the perceived orchestrated outcome from self-proclaimed movers and shakers trying to sew this all up.
That suggests to me that this is going to get even nastier, as long as Shelly can keep up the funding and Palin can keep up the attention. And here’s Palin’s definition of what’s going on right now:
This whole thing isn’t really about Newt Gingrich vs. Mitt Romney. It is about the GOP establishment vs. the Tea Party grassroots and independent Americans who are sick of the politics of personal destruction used now by both parties’ operatives with a complicit media egging it on. In fact, the establishment has been just as dismissive of Ron Paul and Rick Santorum.
Newt is an imperfect vessel for Tea Party support, but in South Carolina the Tea Party chose to get behind him instead of the old guard’s choice. In response, the GOP establishment voices denounced South Carolinian voters with the same vitriol we usually see from the left when they spew hatred at everyday Americans “bitterly clinging” to their faith and their Second Amendment rights. The Tea Party was once again told to sit down and shut up and listen to the “wisdom” of their betters. We were reminded of the litany of Tea Party endorsed candidates in 2010 who didn’t win. Well, here’s a little newsflash to the establishment: without the Tea Party there would have been no historic 2010 victory at all.

This is a level of rhetorical bile that didn’t even occur in the Obama-Clinton dust-up. I don’t know if it will give Newt a final wind beneath his wings. But it’s possible. A new large sample auto-telephone poll this morning shows a dead heat – while most polls show a comfy Romney margin. But the establishment might have over-panicked a little and given the Newt-Palin forces a way back into the fight. That may weigh especially in the Florida panhandle. Who knows?
What we do know, I think, is that Newt will not bow out if he loses Florida and may go on a scorched earth Palinite crusade to stop Mitt on Super Tuesday. And what we also know is that Palin is fanning the flames. If Newt were to do better than expected in Florida, her clout as a king-maker soars. And the chance that she would lead a Tea Party revolt at the Convention grows.

Court rejects bid to hold up new voting districts

State Senate district lines drawn by a citizens’ commission must be used in this year’s elections, the California Supreme Court ruled Friday in rejecting a Republican group’s request to put the new boundaries on hold until voters can decide whether to repeal them in November.
Republican leaders denounced the unanimous ruling, a setback for the party’s hopes to keep its power to block tax increases, which require a two-thirds majority vote in both houses of the Legislature.
The decision “severely undermined the referendum process” by allowing use of the disputed districts before voters can determine their fate, state Republican Chairman Tom Del Becarro said in a statement.
But Peter Yao, chairman of the Citizens Redistricting Commission – created by the state’s voters in 2008 – called the ruling “a great victory for the people of California” and said the challenge that the court rejected was “based on partisan self-interest.”
The court, which has a 6-1 majority of Republican appointees, said politics played no part in its decision.
When a redistricting map drawn by a “nonpartisan entity” is challenged by a referendum sponsored by a political party, said Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, the court should not be viewed as “improperly intruding into the political thicket” if it decides to use the commission’s districts in the next election.

Biden praised the president for having a “backbone like ramrod” before giving a point-by-point recollection of everything that happened in the final day before Obama gave the SEAL team its orders.
“The President, he went around the table with all the senior people including the Chiefs of Staff. He said, I have to make this decision what is your opinion. He started with the National Security adviser, the Secretary of State and he ended with me. Every single person in that room hedged their bet, except Leon Panetta. Leon said GO. It got to me. Joe what do you think? I said ‘You know I didn’t know we have so many economists around the table. We owe the man a direct answer. Mr. President my suggestion is don’t go. We have to do two more things to see if he’s there.’”
Biden said that Obama left that night promising to make a decision, and the next morning returned to the White House and made the order official. Biden credited Obama for understanding everything that was at stake when he gave the order, and took the opportunity to dispute a common Obama talking point.

Seeing Through Palin

I can’t keep up with Sarah Palin anymore. Am I correct that she hasn’t officially endorsed anyone? She’s just speaking out against making a rush to judgment in favor of Romney, right? You know, tell me if I’m wrong.
I could write a Facebook letter to the Tea Party faithful, too, not that they’d care much for what I’d have to say. I’d even be willing to give them some honest advice, even if it ran counter to my interests. The first thing I’d warn them about is Sarah Palin. When she takes up the banner of anti-Establishmentarianism she’s what I call an “authentic fraud.” She’s authentic in the sense that she carries real grievances, many but not all of them justified, against the corporate media, her liberal critics, and her critics within the power structure of the Republican Party. She truly dislikes the Washington Establishment and the power elite in this country. She dislikes them because she fell short of their minimum standards. She dislikes them because she was on the receiving end of some genuine meanness. This part of her schtick is real.
But her appeal to commonsense constitutional conservatism is a fraud. It’s opportunistic bullcrap. It’s her way of appealing to the ideology of the moment, It might be hard to believe but Alaska is the most socialist state in the Union. Alaska citizens receive checks from the oil companies. The largest dividend ever paid ($3,269 per citizen) was in 2008, while Sarah Palin was governor. That was because Governor Palin supported a one-time $1,200 Alaska Resource Rebate. Imagine what Republicans in Washington would say if the Democrats tried to force the oil companies to give a $3,000 check to every citizen of the country. How is that for redistribution of wealth, for meddling with business, for pure socialism?
Sarah Palin had no problem running with John McCain on a platform calling for a carbon-pricing Cap and Trade program. She explicitly endorsed capping carbon emissions in her debate with Joe Biden.
During the debate, Palin emphasized the importance of energy independence, of “cleaning up the planet” and of “encouraging other nations to come along with us.” She went on to say, “We’ve got to reduce emissions.”
“We’ve got to become more energy independent for that reason also. … As we rely on other countries that don’t care as much about climate as we do, we’re allowing them to produce, and to emit, and to pollute more than America would ever stand for.”
When debate host Gwen Ifill asked Palin whether she supported capping carbon emissions, her answer was unequivocal:
“I do,” she said. “I do.”
Yet, when President Obama attempted to implement this policy, she turned around and opposed it vociferously. For Palin, issues and ideology can be taken up or put aside. What’s important is political placement. She has no qualms about criticizing Mitt Romney for once having entertained Cap and Trade, even though she ran on Cap and Trade herself only four years ago. She’s not going to get caught supporting a position to the left of the rightward edge of the party. She doesn’t have to face the voters anymore. She doesn’t have to forge any compromises. So, she’s free to stand on the far right and lob bombs at the middle. This is what makes her brand. This is what makes her relevant.
It’s also why her ostensible endorsement of Newt Gingrich means very little. It’s not about Newt or Mitt. It’s about being a purist. You’re not supposed to know about her record as governor or as a candidate for the vice-presidency. Never mind that her record of income redistribution, “spreading the wealth around” if you will, dwarfs that of Democratic governors like Jerry Brown or Andrew Cuomo.
Palin’s politics of grievance and resentment is real, but her positions are merely convenient. And even if you share Palin’s sense of grievance, who in history is admired for holding a grudge? No one.
So, my advice to the Tea Party faithful is to see Palin for what she really is. She’s a manipulator. And it’s you that she’s trying to manipulate. The attention you pay to her has made her very rich. It has given her influence. But she’s in it for herself.

The POTUS Surge Grows: Obama Leads Romney By 8 In Michigan
Mitt Romney is in jeopardy of losing to President Obama in the very state he was born in. A new EPIC-MRA poll finds that Obama leads Romney 48%-40% in Michigan.
The latest EPIC-MRA poll found that President Obama has gained 13 points in the state over the past two months. In November, Romney led Obama, 46%-41%, but today those numbers have reversed and the president now has a 48%-40% lead. The same dynamic that is powering Obama’s resurgence nationally is also at work in Michigan.
As more Michiganders believe the economy is improving, their support is moving towards Obama. Those who believe that the economy is improving now support Obama, 52%-40%. Just as we have seen in other polls, Mitt Romney’s support among Independents has collapsed. In November, Romney led with Independents, 41%-34. This number has completely reversed itself, as President Obama now leads 42%-32%.
The downward trend of sagging approval ratings and Independent support that has occurred nationally for Mitt Romney is beginning to show up in state level polls. The economy is getting better. Because the economy is improving, more Americans are starting to feel optimistic about the future, and they are viewing President Obama in a more positive light. It has always helped Obama that voters still personally like him, but the perception of a better economy is propelling his reelection campaign forward. It appears that if voters are given some reason to be optimistic, they might be more than willing to give this president a second term.
Newt Gingrich’s attacks may have hurt Romney, but his free fall is more about how he has managed to constantly shoot himself in the foot on the issues of Bain, his wealth, and taxes. Romney may be able to convince Republicans to vote against Obama, but it is looking doubtful that he can convince anyone to vote FOR him.
If Mitt Romney can’t win the state that he was born, then he really is unelectable. The whole crux of Romney’s electability argument was that he could win Michigan, and win nationally with Independents. Both of these points are turning into dust.

Behind Jan Brewer’s Tall Tales of Intimidation Hides a Dishonest Despot
There’s something wrong with Jan Brewer. Brewer has a history of abusing her power and making accusations that don’t correlate with reality.
Yes, Brewer acted the racist during her encounter with the President, pandering to the other TeaFools with her finger wagging and her white supremacist insinuation that the black man “threatened her.” Witnesses from both parties do not agree with Brewer’s fantasy assessment of her Drama on the Tarmac, but you didn’t expect reality to be at play with Jan Brewer, did you? It’s reported that she seemed stunned and confused after her encounter with Barack. Coming face to face with a person of high intelligence can do that to the lesser endowed.
Others suggest Brewer was tipsy, apparently a rather consistent item of gossip in Arizona. Who can forget her blank out during her debate performance?
What was that? Any way you slice it, Brewer made a right fool of herself wagging her finger in the leader of the free world’s face and then attempting to spin her way out of it by playing the victim. TeaFems like Brewer and Palin have a particular penchant for playing the Damsel in Distress against paper tigers of their own paranoid imagination.
Governor Brewer wanted our attention, and now that she has it, Brewer’s odd behavior, propensity for inaccuracies and abuse of power should be the focus.
Before Brewer was misleading you about beheaded dead bodies in the desert, she was engaging in some pretty crafty moves. Brewer’s son’s criminal records were sealed just weeks before she took office as Governor. Ms. Brewer has a son who has been in the Arizona State Hospital (reportedly off and on) for twenty some years. Ms Brewer’s son Ronald was deemed criminally insane in 1990 after being indicted for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a Phoenix woman.
As such, he is not only the recipient of state funded mental health care, but he also received a Social Security check. There was an investigation, in fact, by the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General as to whether Jan Brewer, as Ronald’s guardian, had received overpayments of Social Security to the tune of $75,000.00. In 1995, the law was changed to mandate that people institutionalized after being found not guilty of a crime due to insanity not receive the benefits. It is unclear if the Brewer’s continued to receive benefits or not because while many record requests were made in regard to this matter, they were not filled. The state paid $50,000 for a lawyer to respond to subpoenae and records requests.

Atlanta Teenager Wins Singles Title in Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia — A 15-year-old from Atlanta, Taylor Townsend, became the first American to win the girls’ singles title at the Australian Open since 1989.
Townsend, the No. 14 seed and highest-ranked American in the draw, needed three sets on Saturday to beat fourth-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Russia 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
With shiny braces on her teeth and a big white bow in her hair, Townsend won her first major junior title by aggressively rushing the net, coming forward off serves and returns, showing an all-court game not often seen these days at any level of women’s tennis.
Putintseva, 16, who screamed exhortations at herself in several languages throughout the match and repeatedly smacked the soles of her shoes with her racket after a lost point, slammed her racket to the court and kicked it toward the net as she walked up for the post-match handshake. Putintseva then broke down in sobs in her chair as a still-disbelieving Townsend walked toward her box, tears in her own eyes.
At a time when the lack of a clear “next big American” is bemoaned at the professional level, Townsend joins Grace Min, the 2011 United States Open Girls’ champion, and Bjorn Fratangelo, the 2011 French Open Boys’ champion, as one of three American reigning Grand Slam champions at the junior level.
Townsend says that one of her role models is Martina Navratilova, a left-handed player who was also known for rushing the net and who stopped playing competitive singles before Townsend was born.
“I got the pleasure of meeting her at the U.S. Open, so that was like a dream come true,” Townsend said of her idol. “And I got to hit with her a bit, she gave me some pointers. It was really cool.”
“Taylor has got more variety than any young player I’ve seen in a while,” said Patrick McEnroe, the general manager of player development for the United States Tennis Association.
Townsend, who originally was trained by Donald Young’s parents, Donald Sr. and Illona, has worked for the last two years at the tennis association’s training center in Boca Raton, Fla., under of former Wimbledon semifinalist Kathy Rinaldi.

When Bain Capital sought to raise money in 1989 for a fast-growing office-supply company named Staples, Mitt Romney, Bain’s founder, called upon a trusted business partner: Goldman Sachs, whose bankers led the company’s initial public offering.
When Mr. Romney became governor of Massachusetts, his blind trust gave Goldman much of his wealth to manage, a fortune now estimated to be as much as $250 million.
And as Mr. Romney mounts his second bid for the presidency, Goldman is coming through again: Its employees have contributed at least $367,000 to his campaign, making the firm Mr. Romney’s largest single source of campaign money through the end of September.
No other company is so closely intertwined with Mr. Romney’s public and private lives except Bain itself. And in recent days, Mr. Romney’s ties to Goldman Sachs have lashed another lightning rod to a campaign already fending off withering attacks on his career as a buyout specialist, thrusting the privileges of the Wall Street elite to the forefront of the Republican nominating battle.

JACKSON, Miss. — On a Saturday night in October 1995, a blue Toyota came hurtling down the wrong side of a county road in North Mississippi and crashed head-on into a pickup truck. Scotty Plunk, the driver of the truck, was killed. The driver of the Toyota, 19-year-old Joel Vann, had been drinking so much that he did not remember the accident.
Mr. Vann pleaded guilty to “D.U.I.-death,” and in lieu of jail attended a residential treatment program. This month he was one of 198 people pardoned by Mississippi’s governor, Haley Barbour, as he left office.
It is unclear what persuaded the governor to pardon Mr. Vann; his clemency application contains glowing references and a case study. But the letter to the governor from Mr. Vann’s father, the brother-in-law of a former Republican state committee member and contributor to Mr. Barbour, had a familiar tone.
“All is well in Corinth, and as you may know, we have two new Republican aldermen,” the letter said. It traced Mr. Vann’s path from rehabilitation through college, marriage and fatherhood before asking for “your consideration to grant Joel a pardon at the most appropriate time.”

A hearing to determine whether President Barack Obama is eligible to be on the primary ballot in Georgia took place on Thursday, with the defendants, Obama and his legal team, notably absent.
Georgia Deputy Chief Judge Michael Malihi subpoenaed the president last week after refusing to hear his legal team’s challenge to the case, but neither Obama nor his lawyers ever planned on showing up.
Instead, Obama attorney Michael Jablonski wrote a letter to Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, a Republican and the ultimate arbiter on the question of Obama’s ballot eligibility, telling him that he expected Kemp to throw out the “baseless, costly and unproductive” case.
Kemp responded, telling Obama’s counsel that they would skip the ballot hearing “at your own peril.”
The true nature of the “peril” Obama might face, however, began to play out during Thursday’s proceeding.
The complaints being presented at the hearing are based off various claims that Obama is either beholden to an 1875 Supreme Court ruling that determined “natural born citizens” were people born in the United States to parents who are both U.S. citizens, or that he is using fraudulent documents to prove his eligibility.
California attorney Orly Taitz, queen bee of the birthers and a proponent of the latter belief, stood before what Jay Bookman of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution described as “100 people … most of them older white Americans” to argue her plaintiff’s case.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Judge Malihi was forced to cut her off during her closing arguments, when she attempted to serve as both lawyer and witness.

Shakil Afridi, Pakistani Doctor, Provided Key Information To U.S. In Advance Of Bin Laden Raid: Defense Secretary

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is acknowledging publicly for the first time that a Pakistani doctor provided key information to the U.S. in advance of the successful Navy SEAL assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound last May.
Panetta told CBS’s “60 Minutes,” in a profile to be broadcast on Sunday, that Shakil Afridi helped provide intelligence for the raid on bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
Afridi ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify bin Laden’s presence in the compound. He has since been charged by Pakistan with treason. Panetta said he is “very concerned” for the doctor.
Panetta also told “60 Minutes” that he remains convinced that someone in the Pakistani government “must have had some sense” that a person of interest was in the compound. He added that he has no proof that Pakistan knew it was bin Laden.
The Pakistani government had hoped to resolve the Afridi matter quietly, once media attention died down, perhaps releasing him to U.S. custody, according to two Pakistani officials. They requested anonymity because the investigation into charges the doctor behaved treasonously was ongoing.

The Al Green tune sees huge sales bump after Obama’s fundraiser performance

Singer Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together is riding a resurgent wave of popularity after President Obama crooned a couple of lines from the ’70s hit during a campaign fundraiser last week at New York’s famed Apollo Theater.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, the romantic ballad got almost a 500 percent sales boost for the weekly period ending Jan. 22, following the president’s musical interlude. That was the best performance ever for the tune in the nine-year history of SoundScan’s download charting.
The song was downloaded 16,000 times.
It’s also popped up as the backing track in a Lay’s potato chips TV commercial.
