3 Chics Politico Presents The 3rd 2012 Presidential Debate: The Danger of Bluster & What To Look For

Round #3 of the Presidential debates will air tonight on CNN, MSNBC, CURRENT TV, AND C-SPAN at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. CT. You’re welcome to join 3 Chics for live-blogging. Please feel free to drop links, photos, and comments throughout the day.

Tonight is Mitt Romney’s last chance for Americans to determine if he’s Commnander-in-Chief material.

If Bob Schieffer the moderator of tonight’s debate does his job, we’ll hear Mitt Romney’s answers to the following questions tha Senator John Kerry, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee says Mitt Romney needs to answer:

Question #1: How exactly would you finish the job against al-Qaeda, and what would you do differently than the President has done? currently he’s said that finding and capturing OBL was “not worth moving heaven and earth”

On May 2, 2011, as Commander-in-Chief, President Obama ordered the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden through extensive counter-terrorism strategies. And for the past 3 1/2 years under his command, we have devastated some of Al-Qadea’s top leadership. Romney needs to answer what he would do differently to go after Al-Qaeda’

Question #2: How will you end the war in Afghanistan? So far, it’s been CRICKETS from Mittens on how he would end America’s LONGEST war in Afghanistan and bring our troops HOME. Dude didn’t even mention Afghanistan in his RNC speech!

President Obama has refocused our troops efforts in Afghanistan, after the 911 attacks and started troop withdrawls, after some nation-building there. And he has a plan to use the $AVINGS to nation-build at home in America. The president is committed to ending the war in 2012 and bringing our troops home. Is Romney willing to do the same? It is UNACCEPTABLE to tell American voters that we have to wait to hear your plans after you think you’ll get in office.

Question #3: What will you do differently to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon? So far, it’s been CRICKETS from Mittens on his response. His fumbling and bumbling and WAR-MONGERING on this issue has actually led Americans to believe he is not fit to lead. Meanwhile President Obama has issused some of the strictest& crippling sanctions on Iran and they are WORKING. DO YOU WANT ISRAEL TO GO TO WAR WITH IRAN, MITT ROMNEY? Just answer the question.

Question #4: After months of reckless bluster on the campaign trial, how will you work with other countries around the world to achieve our national security objectives? So far, during Mitt’s internation tour, he managed to insult our CLOSEST ALLY, THE UK. He’s also managed to insult Russia, calling them our greatest geo-political foe, and he talks tough on China, while he continues to benefit financially from having out-sourced American jobs. Can Romney foster a working relationship with G-8, after riding in on his big Caddy and insulting half of the countries?

Question #5: How will you get tough on China? Mitt Romney is all TOUGH talk on China, and has no back up or creds when it comes to designating China a” CURRENCY MANIPULATOR” Members in his own party disagree with his stance on China.

The President also took aggressive action against China on behalf of American tire workers when it was flooding the market with Chinese tires, saving 1,000 jobs here at home as a result. And our consistent pressure on the Chinese to allow their currency to appreciate has yielded results – its value has risen about 11 percent since 2010.

Question #6: What exactly would you have done in Libya? We don’t know where Mitt Romney stands on this issue. He’s taken so many stances. First we shouldn’t have gone in, then it was: We went in too slow and aggressive, then it was we shouldn’t have supproted the mission and then celebrated?

And does Governor Romney agree with Congressman Issa’s decision to release State Department cables that exposed the names of Libyans working with the United States on security and to fight extremism?

Ask Muammar Qadhafi how well things worked out for him, after he threatened to attack and kill his people, Mitt Romney. By working with NATO and our Arab partners, President Obama was able to order the capture of Qadhafi without putting our troops in harms way. What would you have done to protect the Libyan people?

If Governor Romney wants to prove that he’s ready to be the leader of the free world, he must, at a minimum, answer these questions in specific detail. If he fails to do so, he will once again have fallen short of the Commander-in-Chief threshold.

    Post-Debate Impressions

Tonight was the worst ass-kicking any presidential candidate has ever received in a debate in the history of presidential debates. Mitt Romney was slaughtered. And let me explain why.
Ordinarily, the Democratic candidate does much better on substance than the Republican. This has certainly been true since at least 1992, including in the vice-presidential debates. But the problem is that the majority of the voting public is not well-versed enough on substance to know who is telling the truth or which statements are realistic and which are ridiculous. I don’t say this to denigrate the intelligence of the American electorate; it’s just a fact that most people can’t devote enough time to politics to have informed opinions about policy. That’s particularly true of foreign policy.

As a result, it was possible for George W. Bush to make a fool of himself and still win a debate against Al Gore because Al Gore acted like a jerk. It was possible for John Kerry to completely decimate George W. Bush three times and still not win the election. And it was possible for Sarah Palin to appear on stage with Joe Biden without the entire Republican Party being struck by a lightning bolt. The reason Mitt Romney lost bigger tonight than any candidate in history is because he lost on every measure other than substance and he lost on substance, too.

Simply put, Mitt Romney was the beta-dog all night in every exchange. Obama never took his eyes off him. He never failed to attack. Romney was reduced to agreeing with Obama on half the questions. Romney got pushed around by the moderator. His demeanor was weak. His expression was weak. His arguments were weak. If this were a 12-round heavyweight bout, Romney lost every round.

Now, the spin from the so-called “savvy” Republicans will be that Romney softened his position and thereby tacked to the middle. He was the candidate of “peace” and he “didn’t get dragged to the right.” I think we have all seen that these debates are not won and lost by how the candidates position themselves ideologically. They are won and lost by which candidate dominates the other candidate.

Winning on substance is preferable to losing on substance, but it has proved to be no substitute for being both more formidable and more likable. Obama was both tonight.

Having said that, I also told you before the debate started that Obama probably couldn’t move the fundamentals of the race much unless Romney committed a titanic gaffe. Romney didn’t do that.

So, despite trouncing Romney in a way that has never been done before, I do not think Obama will suddenly see a massive shift in the polls. What he will see is a modest bump in the polls. But, God willing, that will be enough to win.

    http://thinkprogress.org/security/2012/10/22/1054581/a-comprehensive-timeline-of-mitt-romneys-foreign-policy-positions-during-the-campaign/

Mitt Romney has spent considerable effort trying to avoid foreign policy and national security this campaign season. But when he’s had to engage, he’s forced to strike a delicate balance between satisfying his neocon advisers and right-wing war base on the one hand — while speaking to the rest of the country, which has no appetite for the militaristic Republican policies that have plagued this country since 2001, on the other.

MS. CROWLEY: He did call it an act of terror.

  74. “Please proceed, Governor”….

  75. Ametia says:

UPDATED: What Everyone Should Know About The Benghazi Attack

Six weeks following the assault on a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Libya, many questions remain regarding the nature of the attacks, what the Obama administration knew and when, and the way that knowledge was delivered to the public. Adding to that confusion is the GOP’s desire to politicize the issue in the run-up to the presidential election.
Mitt Romney was widely scorned for criticizing Obama in the assault’s immediate aftermath for allegedly sympathizing with the attackers. But days later, Romney, his allies and other pundits found an opening to again criticize the administration. U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice claimed that the attack in Libya was an outgrowth of the protests in Cairo against an anti-Muslim film. But the administration’s story soon changed.

This shift in story — while always likely given the nature of intelligence — launched a new round of condemnation against Obama. Accusations and speculation of administration lies and cover-ups have been the major focus of the narrative since then.
But the reality is much more nuanced than what the built-up narrative suggests. The following is a timeline of not the attack itself, but the response to it, by the Obama administration, Mitt Romney’s campaign and the right-wing:

    Mitt Romney’s foreign policy follies
    by Jon Perr-Daily Kos

    Snip

As the presidential candidates prepare for their third and final debate on Monday, recent polling suggests Mitt Romney has cut into President Barack Obama’s sizable lead on foreign policy issues. But if his demagoguery on China (where he apparently still profits from his portfolio of Bain investments) and Libya (where he accused the president of “empathizing” with the attackers) has fueled that uptick, Romney’s laughably long list of foreign policy flip-fops, flubs and follies may come back to bite him. As it turns out, the man who got a “Four Pinocchio” rating for his repeated claims that Obama apologizes for America has a lot to apologize for.

Romney Opposed U.S. Strikes Against Bin Laden in Pakistan. In December, Romney brushed off Chuck Todd’s suggestion that Obama deserved credit for ordering the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden:
