Thursday Open Thread | 3Chics Dance Series

Ohio PlayersThe bump was a primarily 1970s fad dance introduced by Johnny Spruce in which the main move is to lightly “bump” hips on every other beat of the music. As the dance (and the evening) progressed, the bumping could become more intimate, bumping hip to backside, low bending, etc. There were several songs that were inspired by the bump, such as “The Bump” by Kenny and “Lady Bump” by Penny McLean, but the song that is most remembered[who?] is “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)” by George Clinton and Parliament, which was released in 1976. The lyric in the song is “we want the funk”, but has been mistaken for “we want the bump”. In the UK, possibly the most popular and evocative song[dubiousdiscuss] used for this dance was “Nutbush City Limits” by “Ike & Tina Turner“.

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has been hired as a Fox News contributor.

The former Bill Clinton adviser will join the network to provide political commentary. Bill Shine, executive vice president of programming, announced the move on Thursday.

“James’ successful and storied career in politics over several decades is an enormous asset to Fox News,” Shine said. “We are privileged to have him lend his breadth of experience, wit and dynamic perspective on the network.”

Carville helped lead Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign; he continued to serve as a senior political adviser in the Clinton White House.

  3. Defendant tells police he had spat over loud music, opened fire, ordered pizza

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/05/justice/florida-loud-music-murder-trial/

CNN) — It was the day after Thanksgiving 2012, and Michael Dunn had just left his son’s wedding. He’d had two drinks but wasn’t buzzed, and he and his girlfriend were in a “great mood” — headed to a nice bed and breakfast in St. Augustine, Florida, where they planned to enjoy a bottle of wine, he told police.

A stop at a Jacksonville gas station would flip the happy day on its head. His car doors and windows shut, he was annoyed by the “heavy bass” coming from a nearby SUV and asked four teens to turn it down.

He heard what might have been a threat, Dunn told police, then saw what might have been a gun. He pulled a 9mm handgun from his glove compartment and fired four times. Then four more times. He picked up his girlfriend as she came out of the convenience store and fled the scene, not realizing one of his eight bullets had killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis, Dunn told police interrogators.

The couple continued on to St. Augustine, where they checked into their room and ordered pizza but didn’t call police, Dunn said.

    • Check out what O’Mara stated

As for Dunn’s claim of self-defense, O’Mara said he feels Dunn will face the burden of answering a key doubt among jurors: “You were in a car. Put it in drive, get out of there and then call the cops rather than take out a weapon and put eight shots into a car, killing one person.”

Let that swirl around in your head.

      • Liza says:

It’s actually amazing that O’Mara thinks he has credibiity after lying his ass off for Zimmerman. I guess it’s that lawyer arrogance. Let’s hope that Don West doesn’t decide to weigh in as well.

    • Liza says:

I don’t know that it was such a “happy day” for Michael Dunn. He had been divorced for over 20 years and he hadn’t seen his son for five years. They were not exactly close. Dunn was drinking at the wedding and, if he was in a great mood (which I doubt), it could only be because he was looking forward to getting laid in St. Augustine.

Let me get this out of the way first. I think Lupita Nyong’o deserves this year’s Academy Award for best supporting actor. Jennifer Lawrence is fun in American Hustle. Sally Hawkins was fine in Blue Jasmine. June Squibb was a trooper in Nebraska. Julia Roberts was actually rather better than Meryl Streep in August: Osage County. But Lupita’s turn in 12 Years a Slave is in a different class. Her desperation is positively discomfiting. Her degradation is painful to watch.

School Apologizes for Plans to service Chicken, Watermelon At Lunch honoring Black History Month
    AP – FEBRUARY 6, 2014, 1:44 PM EST

CONCORD, Calif. (AP) — Officials at a Northern California private school are apologizing after a controversial lunch menu option to celebrate Black History Month.

Students at Carondelet High School for Girls in Concord wanted to come up with ways to observe the occasion during a lunchtime celebration Friday. But when the school announced a menu of fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon, other students and parents became offended.

KNTV-TV reports that school officials held an assembly on campus Wednesday to discuss the issue and also sent a letter apologizing to parents. Principal Nancy Libby wrote that the items were taken off of the menu and that the school doesn’t perpetrate racial stereotypes.

Libby also wrote the school will hold a diversity assembly for students and faculty.

Calls to the school were not immediately returned Thursday.

HOUSTON -In his 10 years as a mentor and tutor, a local man has always done his best to meet the needs of the students in his life.

That’s exactly what Kenny Thompson did Monday when he learned that some children at Houston’s Valley Oaks Elementary School who had negative balances on their lunch accounts were receiving different lunches than the other kids: cold cheese sandwiches instead of a full tray of food.

He was spurred to take action after hearing last week that dozens of Utah students, whose accounts were delinquent, had their lunches taken and thrown away.Quick Clicks

When White Men Mess Up, All Is Forgiven

Whether it’s drugs, thugs or a bruising football loss, the media find a way to forgive and forget.
    By: Mikol L. Clarke

This was not a great week for white men. And what we may have learned is a lesson that should be obvious but is not always apparent, with the media spotlight usually affixed on people of color and their poor choices or misfortunes.

The lesson is that white men can succumb to drugs, even if they happen to be among the most celebrated actors in Hollywood; they can unravel and threaten lives of innocent bystanders without provocation, even if they walk the halls of Congress; and they can decisively lose a Super Bowl and not be attacked for a lack of acumen or intellect.

White men can do all this and still awaken with the protections of privilege and entitlement and, most important, the benefit of the doubt.

When I heard about Zimmerman and his celebrity match, I didn’t read past the headline. The truth is, every time the cameras turn away from him he tries something new. I have no idea how long this can go on, but all of his shenanigans just incrementally prove that he is a sociopath who wants attention. It is probably tempting for some folks to hope that someone would take him on and beat the living hell out of him in this “celebrity match,” but my gut feeling is that it isn’t likely.

      • LOL!

Liza, you remind me of some of my relatives with ” beat the living hell out of him”. They were really ticked when they said it. Ready to beat a person’s ass! LOL!

It’s tempting to go to a dark place and have those thoughts. You can almost see the headline, “G.. Z.. Suffers Subdural Hematoma in Celebrity Match…”, but of course, that isn’t going to happen. He seems to be steering his own way toward his logical conclusion, who knows how long it will take, but it’s out there. I just hope he doesn’t kill another innocent person.

    Obamacare Is No Job Killer

Republicans and the media are badly distorting a new CBO study on health care and the labor market.
    By Matthew Yglesias

Imagine Bill Gates decided to do something very eccentric and give $1 million to every man, woman, and child living in Hancock County, Maine. That wouldn’t be a particularly savvy use of his charitable dollars, but he could afford it if he wanted to and still have billions to spare. What would happen next? Well, after a bunch of crazy celebrations it stands to reason that quite a lot of people would quit their jobs. After all, while working can be fulfilling, it can also be a chore. Nobody with a million bucks in her pocket is going to want to work at the Ellsworth Wendy’s or wake up at 4 a.m. to go lobstering. Over time, obviously, the regional economy would adjust. Some people would move away. Some would shift into other jobs. Other folks would move to the newly prosperous Hancock County. But among the 54,000 or so people who live there, employment would take a permanent hit.

Whatever you might say about this, though, you certainly wouldn’t say that Gates had wronged the local people or “killed jobs.”

And yet a Congressional Budget Office report—concluding that the Affordable Care Act would, in a much less spectacular manner, also reduce demand for working by improving people’s standard of living—was widely touted in the press as a devastating blow to the Obama administration. Luke Russert called it an “election year killer,” Chuck Todd said the report “reaffirms GOP talking points,” and Ben White called it “devastating.”

On Twitter, Jackie Calmes of the New York Times acknowledged that even though “much reporting & GOP response to new CBO report on ACA is inaccurate/false,” it still presents a “problem for Dems: if you’re explainin’, you’re losin’.”

Maybe. Or maybe you’re just explaining. Explaining, for example, that while the CBO did estimate that Obamacare implementation will lead to 2 million–2.5 million fewer full-time equivalent jobs than would otherwise exist, those jobs would be lost on the supply-side rather than the demand-side.

To see the difference, go back to Hancock County. In the wake of the Gates giveaway, employment isn’t falling there because nobody wants to buy lobster or lunch or get the plumbing fixed. If anything, the demand for workers will go up since there are more people in town with cash in their pockets to spend. But employment is going to go down because the supply of people interested in jobs—especially lower-paying or less-pleasant jobs—is going to tumble.

The ACA will have a similar benefit through two main mechanisms.

Well, if two men and two women are alternates (which is what I read somewhere), then we know that there is at least one AA woman on the jury, but I hope it is all three. I won’t say anything about the rest of them right now, but an AA man or two would have been a good thing.

These prosecutors better know what they’re doing. They better get a conviction.

    • Liza says:

      Thanks, Yahtc. This is interesting.

The shooting occurred in Baymeadows. Southside (where I grew up) is just north of Baymeadows and Arlington is north and west of Southside. All of these neighborhoods are close to where Jordan Davis lived and went to school at Wolfson High. The demographics could be all over the place, but the economic level is mostly middle of the middle class. Baymeadows is much newer than the Southside, built mostly in the 80s and 90s after I was long gone but my brother lived there until he died in 2003. Southside could definitely be home to lower income whites.

The white folks in west Jacksonville have generally been more “conservative” shall we say? My relatives, what’s left of them now, live there and I sure as hell wouldn’t want them on this jury. Riverside, Ortega, and Argyle are in west Jacksonville. Ortega was an upper middle class neighborhood and probably still is. Riverside is a beautiful old neighborhood taken over by young professionals and HGTV addicts, I believe. Argyle is typical west Jax.

    Too poor for pop culture

Where I live in East Baltimore, everything looks like “The Wire” and nobody cares what a “selfie” is
    D. Watkins

Miss Sheryl, Dontay, Bucket-Head and I compiled our loose change for a fifth of vodka. I’m the only driver, so I went to get it. On the way back I laughed at the local radio stations going on and on and on, still buzzing about Obama taking a selfie at Nelson Mandela’s funeral. Who cares?

No really, who? Especially since the funeral was weeks ago.

    * * *

I arrived, fifth of Black Watch clenched close to me like a newborn with three red cold-cups covering the top. We play spades over at Miss Sheryl’s place in Douglass Housing Projects every few weeks. (Actually, Miss Sheryl’s name isn’t really Miss Sheryl. But I changed some names here, because I’m not into embarrassing my friends.) Her court is semi-boarded up, third world and looks like an ad for “The Wire.” Even though her complex is disgustingly unfit, it’s still overpopulated with tilting dope fiends, barefoot children, pregnant smokers, grandmas with diabetes, tattoo-faced tenants and a diverse collection of Zimmermans made up of street dudes and housing police, looking itchy to shoot anyone young and black and in Nike.

Two taps on the door, it opened and the gang was all there — four disenfranchised African-Americans posted up in a 9 x 11 prison-size tenement, one of those spots where you enter the front door, take a half-step and land in the yard. I call us disenfranchised, because Obama’s selfie with some random lady or the whole selfie movement in general is more important than us and the conditions where we dwell.

Surprisingly, as tight as Miss Sheryl’s unit may be, it’s still more than enough space for us to receive affordable joy from a box of 50-cent cards and a rail bottle.

“A yo, Michelle was gonna beat on Barack for taking dat selfie with dat chick at the Mandela wake! Whateva da fuk a selfie is! What’s a selfie, some type of bailout?” yelled Dontay from the kitchen, dumping Utz chips into a cracked flowery bowl. I was placing cubes into all of our cups and equally distributing the vodka like, “Some for you and some for you …”

“What the fuck is a selfie?” said Miss Sheryl.

“When a stupid person with a smartphone flicks themselves and looks at it,” I said to the room. She replied with a raised eyebrow, “Oh?”

Judge orders Texas teen Ethan Couch to rehab for driving drunk, killing 4By Dana Ford, CNN

CNN) — A judge on Wednesday ordered that Ethan Couch — who drove drunk and caused a crash, killing four people and injuring two — go to a lock-down residential treatment facility.

State District Judge Jean Boyd had already decided the Texas teenager would serve no jail time. He was sentenced last year to 10 years’ probation.

His story made national headlines after a witness claimed Couch was a victim of “affluenza” — the product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for the boy.

That particular defense, however, played no part in the judge’s decision, Couch’s lawyer told reporters on Wednesday. Court proceedings were closed to the public.
She (Boyd) said it (affluenza), and specifically mentioned that that was not a basis for her decision,” said attorney Reagan Wynn. “She heard all the evidence and she made what she thought was the appropriate disposition.”

    Poor Boehner’s Predicament

    by BooMan
Wed Feb 5th, 2014 at 07:16:53 PM EST

One of the most boring things in the world is watching John Boehner try to figure out how to pass a clean debt-ceiling hike with a majority of Republican votes in the House. It’s an example of the Republican majority having to deal with the repercussions of politicizing the debt ceiling over the entirety of the Obama presidency.
The way I usually describe this is as “being high on your own supply of bullshit.” Members acted like raising the debt ceiling to pay the country’s bills was some kind of irresponsible betrayal, despite the fact that we were in the midst of the Great Recession, and despite the fact that they didn’t raise a peep about raising the ceiling when President Bush asked them to do it.

They were always denying any validity to Keynesian economics, even though they have no real alternative theory for how to end a recession. They kept insisting that we were bankrupting the country, despite the fact that we print our own money. It was always about mortgaging our kid’s future. So much bullshit. Over and over, they repeated it. Nagging and scolding about the deficit became so hip that the Obama administration began echoing some of their talking points. “The government cannot create jobs.” More bullshit.

So, now, when it comes time to pass a clean hike, Boehner has a bunch of members who have promised never to do that, and who believe it wouldn’t matter a whole lot if the country defaulted on its debt. The mouth-breathing base has been drinking this bullshit like mother’s milk for five years now.

I don’t care about Boehner’s predicament. He can figure it out on his own.

Welcome to Para Bellum Labs, America! “Para Bellum Labs will help create a culture to allow the RNC to innovate faster and recruit more talented people who can build digital platforms to understand public opinion, engage voters and power elections,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus gushed in a press release this morning. Para Bellum plans to recruit on top engineering school campuses and hold fun hackathons.

The charm offensive all starts with the video above, which makes Para Bellum look like a much cooler place than DeVry Institute to get your associate’s degree in IT. “I chose to be a part of Para Bellum Labs because this is something that has never been done before,” says new employee Lauren. (By Republicans, no, this has not been done before. Not successfully. But by Democrats, well, um. Yeah.)

Kendrick Johnson’s Family Sues Funeral Home
    Feb 5, 2014
    By NewsOne Staff

The family of Kendrick Johnson, 17, the Georgia teen found dead in a wrestling mat in his high school gym last January, has filed a lawsuit against the funeral home who was in charge of his remains, reports CNN.

Johnson’s parents allege that Harrington Funeral Home in Valdosta, Georgia was not only negligent, but committed fraud while handling their son’s body.

As previously reported by NewsOne, state medical examiners ruled his death accidental, but his family, finding the circumstances extremely suspicious, pushed for a second, independent autopsy and had his body exhumed. That one suggested Johnson died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Not only did the second autopsy prove that Johnson died from blunt-force trauma to the head, Dr. Bill Anderson discovered that the teen’s brain, heart, lungs, liver and other organs had been replaced with newspaper.

“I’m not sure at this point who did not return the organs to the body,” Anderson said. “But I know when we got the body, the organs were not there.”

Kendrick’s mother Jacquelyn Johnson, who was devastated that her son was “stuffed like a trash can,” vowed to continue to fight against the cover-up perpetuated by authorities in Valdosta.

“That’s my child, and we’re going to fight until it’s all over, until we get the truth,” Johnson said.

State regulators concluded that the funeral home broke no laws when it used newspapers to stuff Johnson’s body, but his family refuses to give up.

The Sochi Olympics is the WalMart of Sporting Events
    February 5, 2014 | Luvvie

The Sochi Winter Olympics has been steeped in controversy, seemingly from the start. When Vladimir Putin enacted those draconian laws against the LGBT community, criminalizing homosexuality, it set the tone for what was looking like the FuckShit Games. Then there’s been the terror threats. Folks have insisted that Russia was the wrong country to host, and they could not be more right because it’s not even Opening Ceremonies yet and foolishment abounds in Sochi.

Mind you, these Olympics are the most expensive ever, costing $51 billion. They went over budget by a cool $39 billy. That’s a whole lotta guap so you’d think all would be well. Nay, friend. NAY.

First there’s the issue of the killing of dogs. Sochi has thousands of strays roaming the streets so officials contracted a pest control company to poison them to fix the “problem” (the AP got that story). Deadspin was talmbout a dog that press fell in love with and ended up calling “Sausage.” Well, Sausage ain’t been seen for 3 days. :-/ Sausage gone, their canine dead.

They couldn’t find any other solution than to mass kill these dogs, doe? Russia, WHAT IS YOUR LIFE ABOUT RIGHT NOW?!?

Journalists are arriving at Sochi to get settled before the games kick off on February 7, and what they’ve found is chaos. The Washington Post did a piece on how journalists are live-tweeting the horrors and it all reads like a bad skit.

So it’s possible for you to show up to a hotel you booked and find that there’s no lobby. Marc MacKinnon, a correspondent for The Globe arrived at his lodging and there wasn’t a lobby so he had to check in through the room of the owner of the hotel.

    …………

Seriously. This is all a complete and absolute utter FAIL. These Olympics are the WalMart of sporting events. SO bootleg. There’s a Twitter account for it too: @SochiProblems (and I’m following it because the tragedy is pure comedy).

Bold Lesson: Florida School District Swaps Cops for Counseling
    .
    By Raul A. Reyes .

couple of years after arriving as superintendent of the Broward County Public Schools, Robert Runcie turned the district’s discipline policies upside down.

“Looking at the glaring expulsion, arrest and dropout rates for our black and Latino students, I knew that we had to do something dramatically different,” Runcie said.

He did away with calling in police for non-violent problems that could be handled by school officials in Fort Lauderdale-area schools that make up Florida’s sixth-largest school district.

Instead, he emphasized alternative approaches for the student body that is 29 percent Latino and 40 percent African-American. Students were referred to social workers and substance-abuse counselors. Detentions were held on Saturdays, in-school suspensions were used more, students were made to agree to behavior contracts and some were made to pay for any costs associated with misbehavior or to do community service.

The overhaul seems to be working, Runcie said.

Stop the George Zimmerman Celebrity Boxing Match

It’s a scary time we live in when a child murderer and domestic abuser is granted celebrity status and the opportunity to make money off the blood and tears of his victims. Sadly that’s exactly what we’re seeing, as news broke that George Zimmerman has been chosen to fight in a televised Celebrity Boxing Match slated for March 1, according to reports.

While the allure of such a spectacle may be strong for many, we must all be mindful of the fact that each person who tunes in would be contributing to the ratings that will help line Zimmerman’s pockets. After the hysteria has died down he’ll be richer (as will whoever fights him) and we’ll be his investors, not to mention perpetuators of his false celebrity status.

We must not stand for this. We must not watch idly as Zimmerman is allowed to make a mockery of not just his victims and their families but society as a whole. This is not entertainment, but rather a shameful spectacle indicative of just how low we risk sinking as a culture if we allow ourselves to tolerate and worse, participate in, such an atrocious display of callous inhumanity.

Here is the other petition that I posted yesterday:

Please drop the George Zimmerman fight match.

George Zimmerman is not a celebrity he was acquitted in the February 2012 shooting death of Trayvon, an unarmed African American 17-year-old.

He claimed Florida’s stand your ground law as defense for killing an unarmed 5-foot-11-inch teenage boy who weighed 158lbs but today, almost two years after the trial Zimmerman says he wants to celebrity box for pay: “Boxing isn’t new to me. It’s something I had picked up well before the incident and it’s something that I liked, I enjoyed, and I kept up with it and I was able to lose a tremendous amount of weight and get a healthy lifestyle,” he told Radar. “So it’s not a new hobby, it’s something I have been doing and wanting to pursue to maintain a healthy lifestyle.” During the trial Zimmerman claimed he screamed for help and his only defense was to shoot through the heart a 5’11” 158 pound 17-year-old who had no weapon because he sucker punched him?

Now, George has agreed to box for pay and fight anyone? There is something WRONG with this picture. Instead of going away, this man is rubbing in the face of mourning parents and those deeply affected by this murder by painting pictures that seemingly taunt the justice system and those that believe he got away with murder and now this? We must stop this fight form happening. This is a blatant show of disrespect and nothing positive or righteous would come from such a stunt.

Please sign this petition to stop George Zimmerman and stop this madness.

A signer one of these petitions wrote:

This is sick and insensitive. It puts “making a few dollars” over the senseless loss of a child.

What if Trayvon Martin were your son? How would his killer being labeled as a “celebrity”, based on the fact that he admittedly killed your son, sit with you???

Signing this petition is the least I could do!
